Because GRIEF funded in just its first 10 hours, we've still got a lot of campaign left ahead of us, and we want to keep that momentum rolling! Below you'll find some new backer rewards that will be unlocked if the campaign reaches certain funding milestones.
$2500 - One-page Poem Comic
At $2500, I’ll reteam with one of my collaborators from GRIEF to adapt a poem I’ve written into a one page comic for all backers at all levels.
$2750 - Bonus Story Pinup Art
If we hit $2750, I’ll reteam with one of my collaborators to create new pinup art to be included with all pledge levels that include digital or physical pinups.
$3000 - 6 Word Short Stories & Cover Art Deluxe Content PDF
For $3000, I’ll create a behind the scenes PDF for Dani Martins’ gorgeous cover art to be included with the Deluxe Content pledge level and up.
$3250 - GRIEF Cover Art Pinup
I’ll add a pinup of that gorgeous Dani Martins cover art to all reward levels that include either a digital or physical print. (Can you tell just how much I love this cover?)
$3500 - I'll Pay for A New Writer's First 5-page Story to be Drawn
I want to get you involved! If we unlock this stretch goal, all backers will have an opportunity to create a six-word short story about struggle and hope to be included on new pages in the back of GRIEF.
5/1/17 - I'd really love to be able to help a new writer be able to get started creating comics by paying for his or her first 5-page story to be drawn, so I've updated the stretch goals to make this the $3500 backer reward.
4/5/17 - I've added some stretch goals above. For now, I've only added the first five, but if this campaign goes the distance, I've still got some cool stuff ahead to be revealed.
4/4/17 - GRIEF has been funded in just its first 10 hours! As a result, I've retired the $5 pledge level, which got you the high-res PDF copy of the book, and replaced it with a $1 pledge level for the same reward. This is something I am very happy to do because, like I said below on the campaign page, this isn’t about making a profit for me. I just want to make comics and I want to get them in front of as many people as I can.
Welcome to the GRIEF Kickstarter campaign! GRIEF is an 84-page anthology of short stories about struggle and hope for the comic book fan.
The collection was written by me, Frank Gogol, and was drawn, colored, and lettered by some of the most incredibly talented indie creators around (more on them below!). The stories in the collection look at the five stages of grief through the lens of comic book stories and cover a range of genres, including superhero, drama, science-fiction, and horror.
I wrote this collection of stories because it’s the kind of comic book I wish I had had when I was growing up. I’m no stranger to tragedy, and for most of my life, terrible things happening seemed to be the norm for me.
When I was just a year and a half old, my dad passed away from a drug overdose. That same year, my mom entered rehab for addiction for the first time, where she stayed until I was about three years old. A few years later, my step-father was beaten within an inch of his life by drug dealers. At 11-years-old, I watch my mother have a nervous breakdown and sat beside her hospital bed as she screamed through the night. And after that, I didn’t see my mother much until I was 19, and she was lying in a hospital bed again after a driver had run her down and left her for dead on the highway.
And throughout all of these experiences, I looked to stories to help me understand and comprehend what was happening to me. I didn’t understand the anger and the depression I was feeling over and over again, and I felt like I was alone, like no one else around me had these kinds of things happening to them.
But if I had had a book like GRIEF, one that showed that other people struggled like I did, but also one that showed that I could come out the other end of these things okay, I’m sure I’d have had an easier time processing these tragedies, and I’d probably have done it in a healthier way.
I truly believe that this book contains some of the best up-and-coming comic book talent you haven't heard of yet. But don't just take my word for it. Check out the sample art below, and then follow the link to read the first story in the GRIEF collection.
The creation of GRIEF was truly an international endeavor, tapping a diverse, talented group of creators from across the globe. Without these artists, colorists, and letters, GRIEF would just be a script on my hard drive, instead of the gorgeous collection of stories that it is. I'd be remiss if I didn't use the space on this campaign page to highlight these incredible talents.
For this mostly digital-only campaign, I wanted to take advantage of all of the possibilities that digital rewards offer to create backer rewards that enhance the comic book they support. Below, you'll find a selection of rewards with something for everyone, from casual comics fans to the most hardcore process junkies and everything in between.
Acknowledgement in the Book - All backers, no matter the pledge level, will be acknowledged on a Thank You page at the end of the book. I've seen some Kickstarter Campaigns where backers at a certain pledge level or higher would receive this, but I sincerely appreciate every one of you, regardless of pledge level.

To keep things simple, most pledge levels build upon the pledge level before them. So, the second pledge level includes all of the rewards from the first pledge level, the third includes everything from the second, and so on and so forth.
The goal here isn’t to turn a profit. The cost of creating GRIEF and paying the creators who contributed was handled well before this campaign began. And truthfully, the goal for this campaign is less than half the cost of creating this anthology. But that’s the price of making a good independent comic book, and that’s okay. So why $1500? Well, with that I can get the ball rolling on my next comic book. And that’s all I want—to keep making comics.
GRIEF was completed back in January 2017. This means that all of the writing, art, coloring, lettering, and book production have been complete for couple of months now. The same is true of all of the backer rewards. This is because of my view of how Kickstarter should be used—not as a vehicle to support the creation of my comic book, but as a vehicle to distribute my finished product to backers.
No experience in my life has brought me more joy than the creation of GRIEF. I have lived and breathed these stories for over a year now, and I am incredibly excited to finally be sharing it with the Kickstarter community. Thank you so much for checking out our little indie book! Your support is greatly appreciated.
Risks and challenges
As far as I can see, barring an act of God, there are no risks or challenges facing this project. The book and backer rewards are all already completed and in Dropbox folders waiting to be shared with backers as soon as the successful campaign has ended and funds have be distributed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
