JOE DRISCOLL & SEKOU KOUYATE
“He doesn’t speak any French, and I speak no English, but through music, we understand” Sekou Kouyate
In the port city of Marseilles, home to many a nomadic soul, Joe Driscoll first met Sekou Kouyate. The two were paired up to collaborate at the French festival 'Nuit Metis' (Nights of Mixed Race), and though they shared no common spoken language, they encountered no obstacles communicating through their music. After a few weeks of improvising and jamming, they had found a spiritual and musical bond of kindred spirits. The resulting album is a mad fusion of afrobeat, hip-hop, folk, and reggae, that defies any simple tags or description.
Originally from Conakry, Guinea, Sekou Kouyate, is a member of world-renowned band Ba Cissoko and is known in France as the ‘Jimi Hendrix of the kora’.
Joe Driscoll, the man Cee-Lo Green labelled ‘the gangsta with an iron lung’ is originally from Syracuse, upstate New York. He moved to Brooklyn when he was eighteen and lived there for four years before moving in the UK nine years ago.
On moving to the UK, Joe became a pivotal part of the OneTaste collective, whose other alumni include Jamie Woon, Little Dragon and Portico Quartet. Joe has also collaborated with Rodney P and Skitz, plus Spragga Benz.
Due to his inventive and energetic live show, Joe has been in high demand the world over - performing at Glastonbury, The Big Chill, Womad, Electric Picnic in Ireland and Lake of Stars in Malawi, Africa.
• “A veritable alternative troubadour who mixes warm grooves with low-slung rap and soaring soul vocals. His inventive sound is reminiscent of later Beastie Boys and Soul Coughing” 4/5 Mojo
• “Like early-period Beck, Joe Driscoll operates in that hinterland where folk troubadour meets hip-hop culture” The Independent
• “There’s no questioning Driscoll’s ear for summery, festival friendly grooves and infectious Beefheart-inspired blues rock” Q
• “Utterly charming” Time Out
• “He masterfully merges the role of rapper and singer songwriter. The colourful and playful songs highlight a versatile talent” The Mirror
Howling Owl have just released their 2nd album "Let the Dog See the Rabbit”. was conceived during gigs over the last three years – Borderline Club supporting Curved Air, at Water Rats, Kings Cross and other venues. The sound is guitar-driven, Americana, but with a distinct rock edge.
Tracks from the new cd have been played on the Radio 3. Late Junction’s Max Reinhardt described the band as ‘spiritually troubled’, after playing The Hanging Tree’ track recently, adding that though they sound deep south they are as London as Chas and Dave and come ‘from the same part of the Thames delta as Mick n’ Keef’.
All the best,
The Frankenspiel Team
