Hi guys,

We're still on our shipping timeline, a lot is going but here's an update on several features.

True wireless stereo

In all the tests we’ve done of the stereo operation, no problems with the stereo functions have emerged, in particular the syncronisation of left and right channels is working very well.

For FS-X set users we want to confirm that when you adjust the volume, whether by your Bluetooth device or by external in-line control, the volume will be changed simultaneously on both left and right speakers. So as we’ve stated previously you will only need 1 volume control for both speakers.

Stereo pairing

We’ve been working on our stereo pairing. The main elements of the stereo pairing are already clear. The first step is the stereo pairing method which will be different from what we described. We’ve thought it through and this makes sense. Your 2 FS-Xs will first pair together by pushing the buttons simultaneously. The master speaker will then pair with your Bluetooth device. The master speaker will always be right, and the slave speaker will always be left, your FS-X set will always remember this.

There is of course an unpairing button press option, so if you want to use only one of your pair for travel purposes you can unpair them.

Firmware functions
In the final firmware we’ve incorporated a pairing memory function, so your FS-X will remember up to 4 Bluetooth devices.

SPL
Through tuning and circuit optimalisation we’re working to improve and maximise the SPL of the FS-X. We’re not releasing the final numbers yet, but it looks very promising. This is just a heads up that it is all going ahead as planned.

Mould mark
We will not cover the mould mark with a logo, we will fill it to the exact dimension, so it will not be visible in the production models.

FS-X and frontframe plate colours
We’re close but still not quite ready with the colours and the UV coating of the FS-X. So we’re going to have to extend the end date by which you would have to choose your colour options (which was tomorrow, june 15th).
We will set the end date after we have posted the pictures to give you plenty of time to finalise your choices. We want to reassure you that this does not jeopardise our shipping timeframe.

As for the frontframe plates here are the silver and black chrome colours.

Notice that we’ve slightly darkened the silver colour to make it look more distinguished.

When we’ve finalised the four FS-X colours we will take pictures of these with the two different colour frontframe plates, to give you a good idea of how they will look like together.

Cables and fastcharger
We’re going for flat cables, that’s for all of them, including the audio cables.

And colourwise we’ve chosen to go for white (instead of black) for both the cables and the fastcharger, because this visually blends better with most interiors.

This is the prototype fastcharger, as you can see there are interchangeable plugs for the fastcharger. You will receive the plug type corresponding to where you live. One of the nice features is that you can also use a standard power cable, which means that you’re not restricted to just using it from the wall plug.

This update covered quite a lot of ground. We hope you found it interesting.
And we'll be back soon with more information and pictures.

Have a great weekend!

Best regards,

@ Elad Hackim & Tim Dreger: Thanks! No problem.

      @ bsl100: 1. Yes, that’s correct.
      2. We prefer not to disclose how exactly we are doing this. But of course, any extra gain in max SPL will not be at the expense of lower frequency performance and will not introduce any distortion.
      3. No problem, glad you like them, hope you can decide when the time comes.

@ Marsha Tyszler: Thanks for your comments and thoughts! Rather than issue the information in a drip fashion, we will soon release all the information with very full detail.
What we can say is that of course you will be able to pair as many phones with your FS-X as you would like, it will work in a first in- first out basis. So every time you introduce a new phone to the FS-X it will remove the oldest phone (of the four remembered) from it’s memory.
Obviously we will make sure that everything we ship will be of high build quality and with a good finish.
The carrycases are being worked on, please see the next update for some pictures of the carrycase prototype.

    4. Frankenspiel Ltd. Creator on

@ Crispin Bassett & Peter John Caldwell: Thank you for you kind words! Please see our response to Tom Davies for the answer to your question.

    5. Frankenspiel Ltd. Creator on

@ Tom Davies: Yes, an Oz plug will be available, sorry we missed it out in the picture. We won’t be able to sell full sets of plug types sets through BackerKit because of their bulk this might lead to increased shipping cost. But we will make the full sets for travellers available for order on our webshop.
When you look at the first picture of the fastcharger with the plug in place, next to the plug there’s a white square, which is the release button. When you look at the second picture you can see two slots next to the figure 8 type recess. On the plugs you have a figure 8 type connector and two hooks. These hooks fit into the two slots and are locked securely in place by a spring loaded mechanism, which gets released by the pushing the button. So there’s no risk of leaving the plug behind when removing the fastcharger from the socket.

    6. Frankenspiel Ltd. Creator on

@ Katrina L. Halliwell: The surface finish of the fastcharger enables it to be cleaned easily and will be coated properly to minimise scratching.

    7. Frankenspiel Ltd. Creator on

@ Laurence Freedman: Sorry to hear that, but we did say in Update #13 that the image of the fastcharger was a design rendering. This fastcharger shown in the pictures above is still in prototype phase, so what we will do is, we will take in all of your comments and thoughts and see what we can do.
One of the reasons for selecting this design is that it has a figure 8 type slot, so you can use it with a figure 8 type power cable and you’re not forced to plug it in the wall. You could for example lay it flat as a block on your desk or table.

    8. Frankenspiel Ltd. Creator on

@ Andreas Hamm: Thanks! Every backer will receive one plug corresponding to their country of residence. One of the reasons for selecting this plug is that you can use it with a standard figure 8 type power cable. We won’t be able to sell full sets of plug types through BackerKit, because of their bulk this might lead to increased shipping cost. But we will make the full sets for travellers available for order on our webshop.

    9. Frankenspiel Ltd. Creator on

@ bazpoint: Thanks for your comment! We will!

    10. Frankenspiel Ltd. Creator on

@ Giles Smith: Thanks! Obviously you and others are interested in the precise pairing method, rather than issue the information in a drip fashion, we will soon release all the information with very full detail. We’re also looking at making a short video to show you all how this will work. And yes, each FS-X is identical in firmware.

      @ Frankenspiel...

      1. True wireless stereo - When you say RIGHT MASTER speaker, is that the speaker facing you and to your right?

      2. SPL - If the SPL is being increased, are you using DSP to reduce Bass at higher volumes so that there's no distortion. My suggestion would be towards using DSP to increase Bass at LOWER volumes so that you get more fuller sound at lower volumes and don't lose out on Bass.

      3. Frontframe plate - These are super cool. Now you have gone and confused me. Both look so cool that I don't know which one to choose.

Thank you once again for the update.

Great update! I love the new plates and can't wait to see pictures of them mounted on the final product. I am delighted that you are able to resolve the mould mark properly because the FS-X deserves to be perfect for all of the work you're putting in. It looks like you've been doing tons of work, and many of the changes make sense. Really happy!

      A few comments:

      1) In regards to the firmware, you've said it will remember up to four devices in total. Assuming we use four devices and eventually get a new one that replaces one of those four, how will the firmware respond? How will it know to drop one old device and replace it with the new? And in a second situation, what if someone's firmware remembers four of their devices, but then they want to use an occasional 5th, 6th or more (whether a friend's or their own) -- how will the firmware know that they are temporarily paired and not to replace the other 4 devices in its program?

Maybe I'm not understanding something, but I'm hoping you can explain how it will work. Are we talking about how many devices can be paired at once or remembered in general? After all, it would be a shame if I'd have to buy new speakers when I would need to pair more than 4 devices. ;-p

      2) I see there's a charger debate in the comments. For me, function over form prevails ... the color is not as important to me as the shape for universal outlet access (whether it's a wall or extension cords being used) and being able to fast-charge both items. I would be happy with black or white, so long as it is properly coated.

I don't know why people think that white plastic scuffs ... I regularly take my white chargers everywhere, some of which are 6-7 years old, and they don't have a single mark (or if they've gotten a rare one, I was easily able to buff it out with a cloth and water). So maybe it depends on whether it's properly coated? In all honesty, I've seen black and other colored plastics (both chargers and other components belonging to friends) with white scuff marks and scratches, and others without any problem, so I would think it's the coating that is the issue and not so much the color.

I'd think Frankenspiel would coat the charger properly since they've been meticulously been paying attention to every detail!

      3) How are the cases coming along?

      Keep going! Great job!

Your update is excellent. I'm not at all concerned about the new shape of the power supply; all that really matters is that it works well. Like others, I'm hoping you will have an Australian plug option, but I see a standard Figure 8 cord can be used and these are very readily available with virtually all plug types.

A great and informative update, thank you. I can see the thinking behind your changes, and I think they all sound sensible. White cables and charger will be more visually compatible, not only with home interiors, but with white Apple and Nokia chargers (and presumably others). The gloss finish on the charger helps prevents marks and some scratching, too, I know. The vertical charger design is also the same as most 'wall wart' adaptors, so even though it doesn't help my vertical powersockets, at least I can use it in my horizontal multiboards fine. The silver face colour looks much better, I may have to change my choice from black!
The only question I had was similar to Tom's: will you offer an Australian plug for those of us in Australia and New Zealand? (Here it is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AC_power_plugs_and_sockets#Australian_standard_AS.2FNZS_3112_.28Type_I.29)

Will an Oz plug be available? Can multiple plugs be bought?
What is the interlocking system on this? Is there any risk of pulling the plug from the socket and leaving the adapter behind?

      I agreed with Laurence.

Black shows dirt less, and therefore takes longer to look dirty. Really helpful for outdoors or busking!

I was gonna say that this update was full of great news, but I am really upset with the new fastcharger design. The original you showed us was black, rugged, smaller, but most importantly it laid along the wall rather than perpendicular to it. Why did you change it so drastically? To be honest, had I known there was a chance that you'd change it to this new design I wouldn't have paid for one.

Really nice update. I'm wondering about the meaning of one sentence: "You will receive the plug type corresponding to where you live."

Does it mean we only get one? Because I like to travel a lot and it would be nice to have those three plug adapters. I would even pay a bit more for it if that's possible. :-)

Great update, everything sounds like it's coming along well! Keep up the good work!

Good update, thanks. Quick q on the bt pairing. How do we know which speaker will be the master right one in the pairing process? Are both the speakers in each set identical re firmware or do you pre program / label the chosen one in the factory? Thanks.
