So, why the delay? A message from the Creator

Posted by Frankenspiel Ltd. (Creator)

Hello everyone,

I know that many of you are disappointed that we have experienced significant delays with this project, and we are very sorry to have let you down. However, I want to reassure you that we are still working hard on bringing you outstanding speakers - as fast as we can.

When myself and Chia started out 10 years ago, the ultimate aim was to create an advanced platform of audio ecosystems that were fit for purpose in an age when your music system had become your iPad or iPhone. Products that interact with each other and expand the possibilities in the way we listen to and enjoy sound.

To make speakers fit for the purpose of today you need a complete sea-change in each part of the chain that is audio technology. In other words, we are doing something completely different and unique to what is currently on the market.

When we asked for your backing, we had a prototype speaker which we knew was something very special. The sound quality is incredible for a speaker of its size and price point. When we launched the Kickstarter project, we had hoped to be able to produce and deliver them within a matter of months. However, as we began the process of upscaling production, we were beset by 3 main difficulties which have been the cause of the delays.

We have worked hard to resolve each of the problems, and we are finally very close to the end. We know that it is thanks to your belief in our product that we have been able to move forward with our dream, and we appreciate it.

1. Production

The bulk of our delay, especially in the first year was due to our production partners in China. Our inexperience in upscaling production meant that we didn't choose a reliable partner, and we have paid for this mistake ever since.

2. Reliability

Once we resolved the production problems, we were, unfortunately, beset with reliability issues that had not been present in the prototypes. We are putting a huge amount of power through a tiny speaker, and we discovered that on some of the prototypes, the components didn't last as long as they should. Although, by then, the rewards were late, we had no intention of shipping a substandard product. We went back to the drawing board and improved various aspects of the design and build. We have, finally, fixed this issue, and are confident in the power, sound and reliability of the speakers.

3. Technology

Since we began our journey, technology has moved on. The production and reliability delays have meant that we are 2 years further into the future - and so our original technology platform was out-of-date. To bring it up to date, we have to incorporate new hardware and software - which is what we are doing right now. These changes will improve the stand-alone performance of the FS-X, as well as allowing them to work alongside forthcoming products and accessories.

We know that further delays are upsetting for our backers, and we appreciate why, but we are committed to delivering the best product we can. We are not just manufacturing Bluetooth speakers, we are creating an advanced and fundamentally different platform of audio products.

We are truly sorry for letting you down with delays and ineffective communication - but we hope you will forgive us and that the FS-X will speak for itself.

So, when can we deliver?

We are now working as fast as we can to deliver all units by November 2016.

We do not have a scheduled date for the next update, instead, your next update will be posted as soon as we can provide you with photos of the final batch.

If you would like to change your address, please do so now. If you have lost your survey or you would like to view your current details please go to You can view your current details by logging into your BackerKit profile. If you cannot remember your password, please request a new survey using your Kickstarter email address or select ‘Forgot your password?’ on the login page.

For those of you who have already received your rewards, we will be in touch shortly to explain how we can upgrade your speakers to the new platform.

All the best,

The Frankenspiel Team

Where are my speakers? Why can't you be honest and admit that you will not deliver and save us the bother of ever thinking about it again?

Hey Sami! Well, Kickstarter only lets you report a project to them a single time. For most Backers...that happened many a moon ago...

    11. Sami Kuhmonen on

I once again remind everyone to send a message to Kickstarter and ask them to explain how this project is not against their guidelines. Kickstarter can't be happy with "we will produce something someday", they should require some actual proof that they will.

So, please do report this project until Kickstarter explains themselves since Frankenspiel is not going to keep any of their promises.

You must be a very nice person. Speaking as a friend of David Archer, as well as an “investor” in Frankenspiel, all I can smell is the smoke from burning boats. Never mind …

    13. John H. Halpern, M.D.

I like that they promise photos.

Details like how exactly technology has advanced beyond the current speakers is lacking. In fact, real specifics are missing all around: it is that lack of transparency that separates this project from other Kickstarter projects that succeed after extended delays. The one month away delivery estimate seems to be playing at the same beat as all the prior songs tap-danced out by Frankenspiel. The retreat back into full silence/no guaranteed communication from them is the WORST sign of all.

Backer money after all this time just has to have already been spent long ago. No new investor is going to agree to carry this over the finish line and then watch the first several hundred units get shipped all over the world with zero return on investment. There is no accounting for current financing so I don't believe there is any hope to be had at this point. All we can do is wait and try to be encouraging to the Frankenspiel duo...but their silence will only grow more deafening for us. When you read the September 2016's hard to not feel quite significantly lied to (again). This present update should just be the start of a genuine communication with Backers but instead there will be even less.

    14. Chris on

Thanks for the update. Fingers crossed for November!

    15. Christopher Muessler on

nobody believes a word of this anymore. just stuff it guys.

    16. Henrik Norberg on

This is the best update so far, it feels like a lot less of a lie like many updates before it. If not for the horrible history of lies and misinformation I would be excited.

But, fool me once shame on you, fool me fifty times shame on you (still). I will be excited if I ever have it actually playing music in my home, not a moment before.

So I guess this is the last we'll hear from them then. Oh well, got some laughs from the updates at least.

    18. Lucas Gabardos on

One more thing: "we are doing something completely different and unique to what is currently on the market."

So the Frankenspiel FS-X is completely different from the SoundScience Frankenspiel FS-1 which in turn is completely different from the SoundScience QSB ?

    19. Lucas Gabardos on

"we have to incorporate new hardware" That's new, last time you just had to update the software for the so-called "finale batch" which was supposedly already manufactured but of which you could take no picture.

As a reminder, back in July, your line was: "There are no reasons why we shouldn’t be able to deliver in early September 2016. We are already working to upgrade the new OS and we have everything in place for a smooth shipment that will be free of error."

Seems to me you had the FS-X's, you just had to update their software and ship them. I guess you didn't lie, I just misunderstood.

And for the fun of it, what you boldly wrote back in May: "We can now confidently announce a deadline for shipment: JULY 2016"

    20. Crispin

Well you've finally found a pro to help with the updates, at least - thank you for that, it was finally a good update. The content of the message is, as always, sad (delayed again, still no photos), but you have a glimmer of respect from me for ploughing on in spite of almost everyone having long-since given up on this very poorly-managed campaign.

    21. jeby on

\0/ is this the n-thiest joke? What do you mean with "By November 2016"? Within the month? Starting at the end of the month? This is update is so useless...(and insulting, by the way)

    22. Patrick Moiani on

My god if you are going to take peoples money just shutup and go away.

    23. Maurice Jobst on

I come here just for the comments :)

So what you're actually saying is...

That's it. We won't get our rewards "by November" (why would we, you've missed EVERY deadline you've set yourselves for the past 2½ years) and we're not going to hear from you again either until you actually achieve a deadline. Please, enjoy my money.

    25. Gustav Öst on

"thanks to your belief in our product" - You have not got that.
"We do not have a scheduled date for the next update". Translation: No more updates.
"November 2016". Fusion power is always 50 years away. Frankenlies is always delivered next month.

Let's see what comes first the Firefly Earbuds I backed in August THIS YEAR, or the speakers from you that I backed back in errm 2014. Only fuckup that is worse was backing Heroquest 25Year Edition. But if I can wait here over 2 Years I give them the same.

Sad but not unexpected news that these aren't out for delivery. That said though, I do thank the creator for an informative explanation to the problems that they have faced. Personally I found it interesting to read even if it is worrying that they are unable to take a photo of the final batch. With that in mind I do find it hard to believe in a November delivery but still. The rest was interesting to read so thank you.
