Feedback Pt. 2

Posted by Frankenspiel Ltd. (Creator)

Hello everyone,

All 5 backers from the ‘First Look’ have received their sets and have each commented with varied results.

We saw both positive and negative feedback. This has contributed towards making some considerable last minute improvements to our software and user interface. Notably the button operation and LED functions, as well as implementing new audio and visual warnings when the battery is low, even when the unit is switched off.

We welcome additional feedback from our ‘First Look’ backers and we want to adopt any constructive suggestions (software-only) so we will continue to Skype with those who are interested. But, it’s important we do not lose significant time. We’ll give it another week to allow detailed input from the 5 backers, we expect that by this time (our next update) the software changes will have been implemented.

Once we have completed these final improvements, we will be able to provide you with a specific timeline. And we will resume reviews with professional bloggers and YouTube vloggers, there are many already who have expressed a keen interest in testing the FS-X so we’re keen to move forward.

Your next update will be no later than a week from now, Wednesday 5th August.

All the best,

The Frankenspiel Team

Kickstarter! I want my money back! They never delivered the speaker!!!

Having a small LED flash once per x second(s) will take up virtually no power but the "magic" inside that is constantly working to say, "Am I still running low?"... over time, how much is that going to use? What a dumb idea.
Id love to see the "reviews" from the first look backers...

@Kevin Jacoby - totally agree. A ridiculous concept to have notification of low battery when the device is switched off! That would p*ss me off no end.

@creator : please, please, please, DON'T glue the encasing , i'm gonna open it anyway to have a look at the botched-up job you guys did , and possibly :
-> put in a bigger battery
      -> fix the USB port
-> any other HW related issues

JUST SEND ME MY FS-X's already !

Sound cutouts make me think the battery can't maintain satisfactory output for very long. As if an earlier tweak to the amp circuit to drive up dB is now draining faster than power can be delivered if the battery is partially discharged. Or if the test models had better batteries and someone switched out worse batteries on them during manufacturing. Anyone ordering batteries from China has seen the ridiculous overhyped mAh ratings on fake batteries.

I've waited this long, though. Please do what you need to in order to get it right. I'll be patient.

At least there should be no trouble running them wired via wired power. Might defeat the purpose for some people, though. If the audio was good enough I'd still find a use for them.

I don't personally want mute capabilities or pretty much anything but audio playback when it is on. I'd want an led showing when I was trying to pair, if the power was low, and if I was playing audio so loud the amp clipped.

Otherwise it would remind me of my Jambox which goes crazy when low on power, turns itself on, and starts yelling 'Battery Low' at full volume. I only run that thing on USB power.

Hi All. So I will post for the information about testing with things wired. Tonight I brought the speakers to the hospital to play a movie for a relative. The speakers are amazing. They sound just impossibly good for their size. But you can't go even a whole hour before the clipping starts. I make sure both speakers were fully charged. But about 50 minutes into the movie words start getting dropped. It's only because I had the subtitles going that I didn't get too annoyed. But, otherwise, yes, there is no way that the speakers are ready for sale. There's just no way that they are ready. The speaker dropout issue is a very serious problem.

      > But, it’s important we do not lose significant time.

Since we won't be able to flash new firmware ourselves, please take the time and get it right. Just be upfront and honest about what you are working on that status is for each cause of the delays.

      > we want to adopt any constructive suggestions (software-only)

Does that mean that these issues noted by @bsl100 (and other first look backers) will not be addressed in the final product?:

      > I do hope the Creators are able to sort out the issues namely:
      > 1. BT antenna
      > 2. Wired Mode
      > 3. Micro-USB and internal vibrations

Or can at least the Wired Mode issue be addressed in a software update to prevent the speakers to from automatically powering down and not powering up properly as described by both @Craig and @bsl100. This seems critical, especially if you have unresolvable issues with reception cutting out sometimes due to bluetooth antenna hardware issues that won't be fixed?:

      > i did have some problems with the wired setup. Mostly when powering down the units after no sound is detected. The amp would power down and then not power up if music played later on. Instead the music would play very quietly and with a lot of distortion.

Well I had one KS project for a technical device where I got my money back. Why? Because the first unit they shipped was faulty and overheating (and also not functioning). The second unit was returned to the sender because they were not able to identify my address and returned it. Then I asked for a refund before they waste more money on the shipment and I got it.

Now I asked already in a PM to Frankenspiel to get my money back, because first the bloggers are not allowed to review the product (except for one who already posted it) and second Frankenspiel talks about "improvements", which are actually just software or firmware updates and that's it. The hardware issues that some people have experienced are left unnoticed or remain unresolved. Also I'm wondering why Frankenspiel did not implement any firmware upgrading tool for the devices, since they want to integrate new hardware to the existing system like the subwoofer mentioned some long time ago. I'm wondering how that's going to be possible without changing anything in the software.

If I don't get my money back, I'll just get the units and do lots of testing (including the testing for dust and water proof). Different music styles, different sound sources. One of them will be my NAS, so let's see if that is working without any flaws.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. You seem to be using "tester" and "reviewer" interchangeably when they are two completely different things.
All the items that the 'First Look' backers (who should be reviewers) are discovering should have been found by your QA team and testers.
So now apparently your first round of testers has found major design flaws that you are rectifying, but immediately after that you are releasing to reviewers instead of doing another round of testing to ensure you haven't introduced more bugs, or missed some others that were hiding behind the previous ones?!
You know that external reviewers will crush a product like this if it isn't at least 90% perfect, right?!
Why aren't you doing another testing round? At this point the majority of us have given up waiting for a product so further delays are unimportant and you can't pretend you are not doing further testing in order to get the units to us asap, so you may as well at least attempt to follow a decent design and release process.

At this point of the project. I don't care anymore for the product. I was excited, real excited about receiving one. I even turned up to the event down in London to get a first listen to a unit. Now, over a year later, still nothing. At this point i would normally ask for my money back so that I could go out any buy a different Bluetooth speaker. Except you won't, which means regardless at some point in the (not too distant/distant/who knows) future. I will receive it. But not before it's been "tested" by the vloggers. Guess what! It doesn't matter, whatever review they give, I've still pledged for one, and I am not receiving any money back. so might as well get the product.

      So from the update:

"as well as implementing new audio and visual warnings when the battery is low, even when the unit is switched off."

Warnings when battery is low even when the unit is switched off... ? Wtf? Who suggested that. This is ridiculous? Who was the tester ? This is complete no sense... Why would someone want a feature like this!

No no no! I don't want to have something that I SWITCHED off starting to notify me of low battery.
Please don't do that as this doesn't make any sense!
This is on when you switch it on to have some kind of way to know if the battery is low. But NEVER when this is switched off completely.

Please tell us who suggested that and please people tell us what you think.

I don't want to have lot of delay again for those kind of non sense feature!

I mean it is like If I was saying "I want my phone, when it is off to notify me for low battery"... What a non sense!

Guys you need to draw a line and also you need to think this is abvously non sense

    12. Sarah on

Another empty update, it's better than no update, but not by much. I'm so close to giving up and just buying something else ....

      Delays? Surprise!
      Hooray! Delicious!
For all of us delay lovers this project is one of the most epic ones.

Will these software improvements remove the problem of bluetooth range and also the cut outs in sound?

I returned my speakers a couple of weeks ago now and despite being told that a replacement set would be sent to me within a few days this hasnt happend.

The biggest issue isnt to do with the led lights. Yes these are wrong currently but the cut outs in sound are a much bigger problem that make them un usable.
