Demo (Comparison Video)

Posted by Frankenspiel Ltd. (Creator)

Hello backers,

As you know, we’ve been wrestling with the comparison video for way too long.

This isn't the most exciting video we've made, our intention has been to simply provide information to backers. In the end we abandoned complicated set-ups and decided to go for a simple, static set-up and use readily available audio measurement tools which everyone has access to and can use themselves at home.

We are using the ‘SPL Pro Digital Sound Level Meter’ from Studio 6 Digital’s app ‘Audio Tools’. This accurately measures max dB, as well as current dB. This was measured at a distance of 1 metre.

We recorded our demo with a Rode VideoMic Rycote, and a Canon EOS 550D video camera.

In this demo we are comparing the FS-X stereo set, the JBL Charge2, and the Bose Soundlink Mini.

In this video we’ve used 5 tracks from alternate genres, at full volume to demonstrate the max SPL on all 3 speakers. Notice how the FS-X masters high level sound with no distortion.

Thank you Danny Dierickx & bsl100 for your music suggestions, some of which we’ve used in our demo.

Please use headphones whilst listening to the demo.

Here’s a table and a graph highlighting the max SPL achieved from all 3 speakers, on all 5 songs from the demo video. All values represent max SPL in dB.

Remember, although the FS-X achieved the highest dB (109.2 at 1 metre), it’s not all about the ‘boom boom’! Notice how well the FS-X performs in terms of sound quality at high volumes.

A mono FS-X's max SPL in comparison to a FS-X stereo set is 3 dB less.

As always thanks for your support. Our next update will be no longer than a week from now, Wednesday 29th April

In regards to shipping, the final units have gone into pre-production and we are expecting to receive some solid dates shortly. Again, we are sorry that we’ve had to push back our projections, we’re doing our very best in these final stages and we will be sending the products to you as soon as possible.

All the best,

The Frankenspiel Team

@ttan, those other two speakers are not particularly loud (which is why I opted against buying them and decided to back the FS-X instead), and a single FS-X seems to be considerably less loud than either of the other two. I'm disappointed beyond measure.

I think the noise may have been generated within the recording equipment (mic/DSLR) setup. If that's the case, the playback audio decibels will not be added onto the noise decibels, but in parallel (I hope that makes sense). I think the best indication that the music was being played loudly was that even the 2 other speakers were also clipping in some parts.

    3. Marcus Sundman on

@Gabardos I know it's 1000 louder, but 1000 * silence can still be extremely silent. Actually it seems that the noise floor is around 60 dB, so we're talking about a 40 dB increase here, which is 10000 louder. It looks like a big number, but it really is not.
For example, the loudness of a normal conversation is 45 dB more than a whisper. The noise floor here should be lower than a whisper, so according to those readings the speaker is much quieter than a normal conversation (less than 30% as loud).

    4. Lucas Gabardos on

@Marcus 30 more dB means a thousand times louder. That's quite different from extremely silent.

@Paul It's impossible to evaluate the quality of the speaker when it's alone but it is possible to compare. And knowing how the other speakers sound we can deduce how the FS-X sounds.

Thank you for your comments in response to our demo.

We've put together another quick, off-the-cuff video based on your comments to demonstrate the frequency response of the FS-X at low frequencies. We've also put together a short demo recording with a mono FS-X.

You can watch these in our new update here:

Somewhere along the way you offered refunds. I've been patient as I've been expecting brilliant things. I've held off buying a decent speaker as I had faith in this product. I'd now like my refund please. How should I proceed?

It's virtually impossible to compare how something sounds from a recording as you're too dependant on the recording / playback equipment's quality..
I for one am just waiting for the solid timelines so I know when I can connect my FS-X up and see for myself, in person, what the quality is like…

    8. Michael Carr on

      They sound shit. End off

    9. Marcus Sundman on

Umm.. during the silence in the beginning it shows 70 dB!? So this is only about 30-40 dB above the noise floor? That's extremely silent!

    10. VictorJ on

This sucks, sounds like a speakers from a headset. Lies lies lies. All about the lies

What a complete and utter joke my £30 cheapos have better base then the two FS-X put together!!!! No bass just sounds like a couple tweeters bashing out treble? Surely you cannot justify a years delay for this as your final production release? I despair, I guess you will now try and sell us the subwoofer so we can experience the bass we are missing from the original product we all backed?

    12. Lee Gibson on

Oh this just failed completely. Everyone should have bought a normal speaker from a big brand. But that's what happens when you take so long and still haven't delivered, lesson learned. Last Kickstarter project I will ever back.

    13. Edward Wilcox on

Totally gutted... This was a horrible comparison. You could have done a single fs-x Vs others and the dual to follow. Totally disappointed on the sound quality. Not nearly as good as I expected. I assume the sound drop out on the dial us them syncinh or sharing the audio.

You are spending your time futzing around making videos no one wants or cares about while obstinately NOT MAKING and SENDING out speakers to the people you relied on and who trusted you.

@LEWIS, I admire you for being positive but, like I said before the JBL Charge 2 sounds much better in this demo and can be purchased today, delivered tomorrow from Amazon UK for less than £70. The two FS-X which it is being compared to, cost over £80. I paid that money over a year ago. I'm still waiting for the speakers and they sound worse than the JBL and the BOSE.

I was under the impression the entire of this campaign that we were going to receive something truely special. A speaker that sounds louder, clearer and more bass than pretty much any speaker in it's price range. Sadly, this video shows that isn't the case at all. It has less bass, less clarity, a smaller soundstage and more distortion in comparison to the other speakers.

I truely truely hope that these arrive soon and sound better than they did in the comparison.

    16. Lewis Purvis on

Thank you for the video guys :). This is definitely a step in the right direction (as far as keeping us happy is concerned). I am little disappointed with how the FX speakers sound in the comparison video, but to be honest, we didn't pay anywhere near the price of the ones to which it is being compared (if you only bought one...). I shall just assume that they are better IRL and that the recording device was a big limitation.

What is the alternative to a "simple, static set-up"?
I think the video itself was done fine. It showed what we all wanted except it would have been good to see a single FS-X and the dual fs-X as comparison too.

That said though I'm dubious as to how they sound compared to the others. I can't say that I'm feeling the £5,000 bentley continental speakers quality that was claimed during the campaign.

Right now though I'll be happy just to receive them and be done with checking Kickstarter constantly.

    19. Peter J on

My guess, the "abandoned complicated set-ups" showed lower scores than were expected and hence, the two FS-X versus one of each of the others and the "simple, static set-up".

@creators - please could you explain the cut-outs in audio output when the FS-X are playing. These don't occur at all on any of the other speakers.

@Creators: can you explain clearly why it has spend more than 3 weeks doing that ....
      @ solutions:
      - You are especially unskilled !
      - You still hide things to your backers ...

OMG....all this time waiting for this? a dual FSX that is completely missing bass frequencies???
      i only can immagine 1 FSX......disappointed...really

    23. Gerhard P.W. on

So far so good, but WHEN will you send the speakers to us ??? Sorry, a really bad experience with this project ! :(

    24. Ploegmakers on

This is a fucking dual test. Why not solo? With 3dB less of the values in the dual test, it does not represent max SPL of 100dB.

    25. Peter J on

" it’s not all about the ‘boom boom’" ... Of the three under test, the FX sounds the tinniest of them all, like its being played down a length of drainpipe!
Looks like the sub is a requirement, not an extra.

Could you clarify what is meant by pre-production? Haven't we been in pre-production all this time?
