Brian and Nick here. For those of you who don't know us, we are a DIY, independent folk duo from Chicago by way of South Bend, Indiana. We are music obsessives with a love for writing, performing, and producing. Our dedication to the art has taken us as far as rural Uganda to record an album with a children's choir, on multiple tours of the midwest, and has even resulted in the creation of a house concert and video series, Fluke Takes.
To date, we have released two self-produced records that we couldn't be more proud of: Kandote with the Barefoot Truth Children's Choir of Kkindu, Uganda, and our Queen for Me EP. Kandote, our debut record (and non-profit project), has raised over $6,500 from album sales and donations, all of which has been sent to Kkindu to help the children in the choir pay for their primary school education. Our most recent release, Queen for Me (which we give away for free on our website), has been downloaded over 4,200 times this past year. While both of these projects were highly formative for us as a band, they were limited in scope due to their virtually non-existent budgets.
So, the time has come to embark on our biggest production thus far: our first full-length album. This is going to be our best record yet, and we would love to have the financial freedom to complete this project without cutting any corners. For that to happen, we need your support.
Where will the money go?
We take a lot of pride in the fact that we are our own writers and producers, and love that our home studio gives us the luxury to be creative in ways that other artists can't. As self-sufficient as we are, though, delivering a project of this magnitude requires more than we can produce from just our apartment's third bedroom. In addition to the costs of printing, packaging, and promoting our work, we will be recording in bigger spaces with better equipment and with talented friends from across the country. We've identified all of the resources necessary to make this album happen, but once again, we don't have the capacity to see the project through without your help.
Setting a budget for any record is not an easy task, which is why so many artists rely on record labels to take care of it. By doing this ourselves, we are able to spend far less money, and the money we do spend is spent more efficiently. We've done our homework, and $10K is the absolute minimum we need to properly account for the following essentials:
- CD Duplication
- Hourly pro studio rates
- Minor studio upkeep (replacing some broken equipment)
- Paying musicians to play the few instruments that we can't
- Promotion with James Moore from Independent Music Productions
- HQ music video for the single with 119 Productions
- Merch (T-shirt and poster) printing
- Shipping everything to your doorstep!
In addition to the basics, our stretch goals are:
- $3000 over and we’ll print it to vinyl
- $5000 over and we’ll print to vinyl + make a second music video
What will the new record sound like?
Here’s a small taste of what we've been working on. For the album, you can expect a slightly groovier FLA sound driven by the core traits that you always hear in our music: nuanced acoustic-based arrangements, rhythmic phrasing, and thoughtful lyrics inspired by our folk upbringings.
Risks and challenges
This will be no small feat, and given our previous experience recording Kandote and Queen for Me we can safely say that the two of us will collectively spend over 1500 hours during the course of the next 10 months working on this record. It will be both of our second jobs, which we will treat with the utmost seriousness and professionalism, as we do all of our musical endeavors. That number may sound crazy, but we are crazy people and are fully committed to the vision.
***As many of you know, Kickstarter is all or nothing. If we don't reach our goal, no money changes hands, and we won't complete the project.***
Our Promise to You:
If we do reach our goal of $10K, you have our word that this project will not be cancelled for any reason. In the event that an unexpected setback delays production, we will clearly communicate that to every single one of our backers.
Your help in funding this record will mean the world to us.
Thank you for your support!
