1 Player Guild?  Challenge Coin?  What are you talking about?

Over on BGG (Boardgamegeek.com) there is a little corner of the Internet known as the 1 Player Guild.  The guild is dedicated to solitaire board games in all its forms.  It's a very friendly and welcoming place with over 4500 members.  Well, recently we got the idea that it might be fun to create our 1st annual challenge coin.  What's that you ask? According to Wikipedia, "a challenge coin is a small coin or medallion (usually military), bearing an organization’s insignia or emblem and carried by the organization’s members. Traditionally, they are given to prove membership when challenged and to enhance morale. In addition, they are also collected by service members."   Well, not all challenge coins are military as you can see from the image below.

The Looney Labs coin above (bottom center coin) is 1.75" across just like the coin we are trying to make.  A US quarter is just under 1" (24 mm)

The design for the 1 Player Guild's coin was a collaborative effort discussed on the guild's forums and the design for the front of the coin was created by one of our own guild members.

The back of the coin was put together to show a few of the various aspects of the guild.  The top quadrant shows the logo for the 1 Player podcast.  The guild was started as a place for listeners of the podcast to talk about the show and solitaire gaming in general. However, the guild has outgrown the podcast and not all members listen to the podcast or may even be aware of this connection.

The left side of the back has the letters SGoYT.  This stands for Solitaire Games on Your Table.  On BGG, there is a geeklist based thread (SGoYT) in which folks discuss what games they are playing every month.  The monthly thread is a great way to learn about games that support solitaire play and what folks think of them.  It is arguably the heart of the 1 Player guild.  The current months list can be found here.

The right side shows Challenge Accepted.  Another popular aspect of the guild is the lively challenges that pop up all the time.  In these challenges, folks are able to compete against each other in various solitaire games, usually trying to get the highest score.  The challenges are a fun way to interact with others and "game alone together".

Finally, the bottom quadrant shows the dates the guild was founded.

A unique feature of this coin it that it is being made with a 3D die on the front face.  The die image should actually stick out above the surface of the coin.  What makes this neat, if it works, is that you'l be able to use the die as a spinner.  The back of the coin features a bright yellow arrow which will be the pointer.  Check out the inspiration for this spinner...

As mentioned this is the 1st annual 1 Player Guild coin.  If the Kickstarter is a success, future coins are sure to be made.  Each annual coin will have a distinct design.  It is probable that future coins will not have the 3D die effect and will not work as a spinner.  However, I reserve the right not to do this again if the task turns out to be overly challenging.

But wait!  There's more...

That's right.. there aren't just coins.  We are also making dice!  Well, Chessex is making us dice.  Either way, you can get 16mm dice with a variant of the 1 Player Guild logo.  The actual logo can't be made on a die because of the small size of a die and fine detail of the logo.

Here's a sample die that Chessex created.

You have a total of four color choices which you can mix and match as you like.

  • Opaque Black / White
  • Scarab Scarlet / Gold
  • Gemini Black-Purple / Gold
  • Vortex Teal / Gold

So what is all this going to set me back?

The price of the coins is as reasonable as I can make it.  My intent is not to turn a profit, but because I can't predict all the costs well, I do have to pad the price a tiny bit.

The 1st coin is $7.00.  I was going to make it 6.75, but KS doesn't let me.  So I rounded to $7.00 and made the shipping cost lower.  It all balances out.

Each additional coin is $6.75.  Dice are $0.75 each.

You can refer to the handy price chart below to figure out how much you want to back for.

US Shipping

The shipping cost is in addition to the pledge level, but it is relatively reasonable.  For US shipping, the cost will be $3.00 for a small pacakge.  See the chart below for what you can fit in a small package.

International Shipping

International shipping is more expensive and currently $13.50 for a small package.  International shipping has a similar cost structure, but the number of items that can be included is a bit lower.

Large Quantities

If for whatever reason you want more items than the numbers mentioned above.  Let me know and I can make an appropriate pledge level  with the correct shipping costs.  Bulk orders, especially for international backers are welcome and encouraged if it will help reduce costs for you.

Special Thanks

I would like to give special thanks to A.J. Porfirio and Van Ryder Games.  Their support has helped keep the cost of the coins low.  Check out their fine games including their current games Tessen (BGG, VRG) and the award winning Hostage Negotiator (BGG, VRG), as well as the upcoming Kickstarted games Salvation Road (BGG) & Saloon Tycoon (BGG).

Risks and challenges

The biggest concerns with this project is that there is a strong emphasis on keeping the cost down over making a financial profit. I have carefully calculated costs, including shipping, but unforeseen issues could impact my ability to ship in a timely manner.

I have never tried to purchase challenge coins in bulk, but there are quite a few vendors of such coins and production is not complex. The 1 possible issue is that the ability to use the coin as a spinner is untested and a final product may not spin well. However, that will not keep it from being an attractive keepsake.

I have worked with the dice manufacturer on previous occasions and do not foresee any issues with those getting made.
