First Person Arts (FPA) is a Philadelphia-based non-profit committed to the power of the personal. For over 12 years, we’ve produced hundreds of events featuring stories in all art forms based on real life experiences. Now we want to take our stories beyond the stage and give you a new way to get in on the act, too.
The First Person Arts Podcast will feature personal stories from our live events plus stories submitted through a Google voice hotline. Anyone can call in with a story. We want to hear real life stories from across the country. Maybe from around the world?
With your help, the First Person Arts podcast will launch in the summer of 2013. The podcast will be free and distributed regularly via iTunes. The goal of this Kickstarter campaign is to secure the funding so we can hire award-winner audio producer Yowei Shaw for a full year. Yowei has produced segments for Fresh Air with Terry Gross, Studio 360, Morning Edition and more. She’s also a First Person Arts fan herself and has been coming to our events for years. (Meet the full podcast team below.)
We also want to be able to pay musicians for podcast music, offer the storytellers a stipend, and purchase ads on other storytelling podcasts and public radio. The more money we raise over the Kickstarter goal means Yowei can create original content, like exclusive stories from First Person Arts Festival artists or more polished versions of live StorySlam stories. (A more detailed budget is below.)
If this campaign is successful, Yowei will immediately begin producing the first 12 podcasts, and they will begin airing in early June. We will release podcasts weekly, with occasional interruptions around major holidays.
With the help of some of our amazing storytellers and hosts, we’ve put together some fun rewards to thank our supporters for giving. And because First Person Arts is a 501(c)(3), your gift is tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law. (More details below.)
Please give, please share, please listen, and please tell your story. Thanks for your support!

Risks and challenges
First Person Arts brings 12 years of experience in storytelling, plus a large and ever-growing archive to this project. The main risk is that people will not call into the Google voice hotline. We plan to mount a vigorous campaign to spread the word about the hotline through press, advertisements, our social media networks, through our national storytelling networks. However, it is entirely possible that the hotline will not work. That said, the weekly podcast can still occur and we can brainstorm new ways to include more storytellers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
