“The mix of simple mechanics, item management, and luck are all melded together in this enjoyably thematic game.” —The Cardboard Republic
“Relic Expedition makes for a fun experience that I’m happy to play again.” —Jonathan H. Liu, GeekDad
“Overall, I’m pleased with Relic Expedition. Every game gives the players a new jungle to explore.” —Cyrus Kirby, Father Geek
“Those who love Carcassonne, Settlers, Pandemic, and Survive are going to love Relic Expedition.” —Games With Two
“This is a lighter game with broad appeal. I think Relic Expedition will hit the table many times. This one is a buy for me.” —Michael Lee, Posted on Board Game Geek
The board starts small, with only a few of the tiles revealed. As players explore the jungle, new tiles are revealed and the board grows in unpredictable ways — a completely different game each time.
Hidden in the jungle, you’ll find relics with six different insignia made from six different materials. To win, you must collect four matching relics — either four with the same insignia or four of the same material — and fly away from the jungle to victory.
Hand (“Backpack”) Management
You’ll need more than just relics if you hope to travel the treacherous terrain and survive the dangers of the jungle. You’ll also need supplies like machetes, mountain climbing gear, traps, tranquilizer darts, and more.
You carry relics and supplies together in your backpack, but your backpack space is limited! As the game progresses, you’ll have to choose carefully. As you find more relics, you’ll have to make tough decisions about which supplies you will leave behind.
- 4 explorer meeples
- 16 animal meeples
- 3 dice (two custom, one standard)
- 36 relic tokens
- 70 supply tokens
- 112 hexagon tiles
- 4 large tile boards
- 4 backpack trays
- 1 cloth bag
We have tested Relic Expedition with over 100 players, and we have received great feedback! Here’s a sample:
“Great, great game! Can’t wait to see it and buy it in print. I’ll be one of the first customers." —Maren Boehm, Louisville, KY
“The dynamic way the jungle reveals itself means your next game will be different from the last." —Wade Winningham, Frisco, TX
“Each time I play I learn a new element of strategy that makes this game enjoyable on many levels." —Ben Jakuben, Orlando, FL
“I’ve played this jungle adventure now on several occasions, and look forward to it as much as Catan and other favorite games. A truly compelling game. This could easily become a staple in every gamer’s closet.” —Stephen P. Anderson, Plano, TX
“The perfect mix of goal-oriented treasure hunting and potentially frustrating player vs. player setbacks.” —Justin Bowers, Dallas, TX
“It’s a magical moment when you the find the cave, the mountain, or the river — and all its treasure.” —Michael Poley, Orlando, FL
“Monkeys and panthers and boars! Oh, my! I love this game and can’t wait to introduce it to my friends.” —Ken Starzer, Irving, TX
“The brilliant combination of strategy and serendipity makes it fun for all types of personalities. Great for multiple age levels too!” —Erin Bynum-Anderson, Plano, TX
[We have reached some stretch goals, and we have upgraded some of our rewards for the final week of the campaign. We can't edit the descriptions for rewards that have already been claimed, so this list below includes the additional items. See Update #10 for details.]
We have numerous reward levels to give you multiple ways to enjoy Relic Expedition and support the project. Here’s an overview:
Here are details about the items mentioned in the chart above:
Wild Die Expansion — We have tested one expansion, an additional custom eight-sided animal die. This die has a new symbol on it: a Wild symbol. When it is rolled, the roller selects which type of animals will move on the turn. This increases the danger of each roll and the tension of player interaction.
Missions Expansion — The Missions expansion is a deck of mission cards. In Missions, players no longer all have the same objective to collect four matching relics. Instead, players draw mission cards that are more difficult to obtain and kept secret.
Patch — The supplies in the game have been designed to look like merit patches. The EXPLORER rewards comes with a patch like one of the supplies. The TRAILBLAZER rewards include a second patch like one of the relics.
Button — Receive one button with the Foxtrot Games logo.
Feature Naming — The jungle contains three starter tiles that bring large feature tile boards into play: a mountain, a cave, and a river. The features contain a high concentration of relics that entice players once they are revealed. Backers of rewards with feature naming will have the opportunity shortly after the campaign to nominate names for these three features and to vote on the final names used in the game.
Video Call — Receive one video call (over Skype or Google+) with game creator Randy Hoyt, up to one hour long, talking about the game and teaching you and up to three other players how to play.
Prototype — Receive one prototype copy of the game shipped shortly after the project funds. In the future, you will also receive early, prototype-compatible copies of up to four expansions we plan to make in the future for play testing.
Game Night — Receive one game night with game creator Randy Hoyt (in Orlando, Florida) or game artist Tyler Segel (in Portland, Oregon) at a public place like a board game store. (Travel is NOT included.)
Future Games — Receive one copy of all future Foxtrot Games releases, as well as preview and prototype copies of future games and expansions to participate in play testing. Our long-term goal is to become a publisher of engaging, beautiful, and accessible strategy games with a variety of themes from a wide range of game designers. Get some other great rewards now, support what we’re doing, and take a chance on us: you could reap huge rewards.
Extra Copies — You can add additional copies of Relic Expedition to any reward level. When you enter the amount you want to pledge, simply specify a number $40 higher than the reward pledge amount for each additional copy of the game. (For additional games outside of the United States, you will also need to add an additional amount for shipping; see details below.)
Free shipping to the United States is included in every reward, but some shipping charges need to be added for international backers. We are partnering with Game Salute to handle fulfillment. They use local fulfillment centers within Canada, the EU, and Australia to help mitigate the costs to our backers. Here are the rates you will need to add to your pledge:
Canada, United Kingdom, European Union, and Australia
One Game: $20 // Each Additional Game: +$10
Rest of the World
One Game: $40 // Each Additional Game: +$40
Backers who will be attending Internationale Spieltage SPIEL in Essen, Germany (October 24-27, 2013) can now choose to pick up their rewards at the convention! Simply select the GAME ONLY (ESSEN) reward. You can still pledge to receive most of the other reward levels, but we are using one reward to make it all easier to track. Simply pledge the amount for the reward you wish to receive, select the GAME ONLY (ESSEN) reward, and then let us know in a message or in the final survey your desired reward.
- GAME ONLY: $49
- EXPLORER: $59
- TRAILBLAZER: $89
- DOUBLE EXPLORER: $99
- TRIPLE EXPLORER: $139
- RIVER RAFTER: $149
(Levels higher than RIVER RAFTER include multiple shipments or a game night in Orlando or Portland. If you live outside the United States and want to pledge more, please send us a message!)
We will be providing more information about this reward level shortly.
If you want to explore Relic Expedition further, you can download the Quick Start Guide and the Reference Manual as PDF documents. (Please keep in mind that we're still refining the rules, adding examples, and designing these two documents to match the look of the game.) These should give you a good idea of what Relic Expedition is about and how it plays.
Who We Are
Foxtrot Games is a new board game publisher committed to publishing engaging, beautiful, and accessible strategy games. We are owned and operated by Randy Hoyt (Producer, designer of Relic Expedition) and Tyler Segel (Creative Director, artist for Relic Expedition). We posted more information about them in updates throughout the campaign:
Relic Expedition will be the inaugural game from Foxtrot Games. With your help, we will raise the money we need to manufacture this game. We will also move one step closer to bringing more games like this one into existence. Our long-term goal is to publish many more games, with a variety of themes from a wide range of game designers. Learn more about our future plans in Update #11.
We achieved our goal early (with four full days to spare) and achieved our first stretch goal! (See Update #8.) These “stretch goals” are increases we will add to reward levels if we reach the following levels in pledges:
1. — Achieved!!! — Missions Expansion
Every backer at the EXPLORER level will receive an additional expansion. In Missions, players no longer have the same objective (four matching relics). Instead, players draw individual missions that are more difficult to obtain and kept secret. We expect this expansion to ship at the same time as the rest of the items included in this reward, but it is still under development and could be shipped in December 2013. (Every additional copy of the game added to the EXPLORER reward will also come with a copy of this expansion.)
2. — Achieved!!! — Custom Explorer Meeple
The four pawns in every copy of the game will be replaced by custom explorer meeples.
3. — $35,000 — Villages and Markets Expansion
Every copy of the game included in a reward for this campaign will include one new expansion with two new types of jungle tiles: villages and markets. Villages contain relics for which players must trade supplies; they make some relics more costly to obtain, and they give players a reason to carry duplicate supplies. Markets contain supplies for which players must trade relics; they give players another way to obtain the supplies they need, and they give players the opportunity to remove from the game relic that their opponents need.
4. — Included!!! — Engraved Dice
We had originally planned to have the two custom dice silkscreen printed, offering engraved dice as a stretch goal. We have heard your feedback, and every copy of the game will now come with engraved dice.
Risks and challenges
Manufacturing hundreds or thousands of board games is an expensive and time-consuming endeavor. We could not do it without the financial assistance and support of our backers. There are a lot of steps in the process, and delays or setbacks could happen at any one of them.
— For manufacturing, we are working with Panda Game Manufacturing in Vancouver, B.C. They have a great portfolio of high-quality games and a wealth of experience.
— For design and file preparation, we are drawing on the experience of Factory North, a design agency in Portland, Oregon with experience in custom printing overseas.
— For fulfillment, we have partnered with Game Salute in New Hampshire. They have a proven track record and distribution channels that help us keep our shipping costs down. (They use local fulfillment centers within Canada, the EU, and Australia that help mitigate the costs for our backers.)
We're excited to bring this fun and beautifully-designed game to your table. Thank you for supporting this project, and we encourage you to share it with anyone you know who appreciates quality board games!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
