A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
What can you do with a SHÜ blaster? The possibilities are limitless, but we play love playing the urban spy game called Jericho. Check it out!
SHÜ is the worlds first foam dart blaster that has been specifically designed to be used by adults who play public tag games. It was developed for an urban spy game called Jericho, which traces its roots back 25 years ago!
In the beginning...
Jericho -The Urban Spy Game started in 1991 in a small town in Colorado. It was revived in San Francisco 8 years ago by its designer, Shannon Bruzelius, as a Meetup group. Today, the group has grown to 1300 members who play games every month.
All you need to play is a Nerf gun and a bandanna.
In 2010, Shannon started Foxhound Urban Adventures, Inc., that designs and curates Jericho games for corporate outings and private events. Jericho requires players to be able to harmlessly tag each other in order to win. Thousands of players have been equipped with Nerf guns for games on the streets of San Francisco.
Jericho players used everything from big yellow Nerf guns in shoulder holsters to small blue ones that fit in a jacket pocket. Even though players are clearly playing with toys, lingering questions always surface about safety. That's always on our mind as well.
When Shannon combined the safety question with the eternal question of "what is the best blaster?"; he started to wonder if there was a better way to play.
Enter the Toy Engineer
In a previous life, before Shannon became an amateur spy, he spent 11 years as a toy engineer.
He managed and manufactured dozens of toy projects over his career, and oversaw almost every aspect of the process it takes to get from design on paper to product in hand. He also managed the customer service dept and had a large hand in improvements that were made after toys started production. All this experience has culminated in his ability to customize something especially for covert action.
A Covert Blaster is Born
For the past two years, Shannon has been working with former toy industry colleagues who tested concepts and collaborated in the development of a stunning working prototype, which has been field tested in many Jericho games.
Additionally, we received input from our San Francisco Jericho community, which we believe has helped us to come up with something that will appeal to not only Jericho players, but the larger Nerf community as well.
SHÜ works with all standard nerf darts and requires no batteries.
Help Us Cross the Finish Line
We are set up at the starting of line for production: we have a very experienced factory, packaging experts, engineers, and fulfillment experts, but we need one thing...
We need you.
We are looking to raise $150k to make tools and packaging, to buy sourced parts and raw materials, and to begin production.
Risks and challenges
Many kinds of issues can arise when manufacturing any physical items, and we are walking in eyes open for all of them.
First, we are setting up the project for success by refining the design to be efficiently manufactured (Design-For-Manufacturing). This will save time with assembly & production, improve quality, and simplify the debug process.
Next, we are watching for issues with quality assurance in molding & sourced items.
Throughout the process, we'll be actively avoiding assembly delays & looking for process improvements, as well as having a backup plan if there are issues with sourced items, internal components, and packaging.
We understand the value of being close to our manufacturer. Superb communication is needed, and we know how to achieve it. The production & shipping facilities are located in California, specifically, 30 minutes from our location. If things go wrong, we can be on site to work through issues at the source.
Finally, we're partnering with a local logistics company for fulfillment. Shannon worked closely with the company for many years, in which they demonstrated their knowledge and capacity to ship products anywhere.
We will design a game just for backers to take place in San Francisco (our city)and hand deliver your SHÜ + 4 extra darts + Jericho Bandana. Unlimited dart refills for the whole game!
Travel to San Francisco is required for this reward...on your dime.
This is a complete Jericho experience for 20 people. We will hand deliver 20 SHÜ dart launchers, 20 sets of darts, and 20 Jericho bandanas to you. We will also design and run a Jericho game in the urban city of your choice, anywhere on the planet.
