**I apologize for my voice in the video above. I managed to get the flu the day I planned to launch the Kickstarter.
As you hopefully viewed in the video above, I am Fox Emm. I'm a writer/contributor to a variety of horror entertainment websites. Most notably you can find my work on WickedHorror.com, ZombieApocalypse.net, and GoresTruly.com. I'm a fan of splatterpunk as well as horror in general, and I wanted to revive the beloved genre which is known for taking matters to the extreme. (You can read a great article by my colleague Nat Brehmer on Why Splatterpunk Should Make a Comeback here.) This publishing project started out as a labor of love, but being a starving artist myself I believed that writers and creatives should be paid for their work, which turned this project into an investment.
Alas, even exclusively horror genre publishers I pitched the concept to seem to want to stay away from anything that tests the limits too much. Calls for papers repeatedly include phrases which suggest authors should limit themselves and shy away from violent or gross horror. I received many submissions whose cover letters were riddled with doubt because the author had been told that their content was too graphic or was not a good fit for weak stomached publishers. Depressing! As horror films continue to test the limits of what is acceptable and not, it seems only fair that written horror should have the same capability!
That is what prompted me to start Spooky Words Press. Being spooky has been synonymous with being weird or different while erring on the side of frightening for as long as I can remember, so it was the obvious choice for a publishing name.
Thank you so much for taking the time to check out my Kickstarter. If you don't have the funds to support (just $1 will still be a great help!), please share the details with other horror fans you know.
A themed anthology for extreme horror fans. In this chilling horror collection, 29 writers and poets have come together to share tales of the grotesque, the supernatural, and more. Their words will pluck you from your comfort zone and leave you for dead, or worse. Have you ever considered where evil bides its time when it’s not outside your door? What disturbing locale could make it feel safe? We've all heard that home is where the heart is, but alas, that heart is sometimes racing… We hope you live in a good neighborhood.

The Ebook Tier is for book lovers who would like to offer a small contribution to help further our project, and get something in return. Ebooks will be delivered via email the same day the book is released on Amazon. The book will be $4.99-5.99 on Amazon, so this is a savings to you and a benefit for us!
I for one, always prefer physical books to their electronic counterparts. The fact that I've run out of bookshelf room rarely seems to factor into this equation. If you're like me, please consider pledging assistance at this tier. Each book ordered from the Kickstarter will be hand numbered by myself, Fox Emm and marked to indicate that it is a first printing.
The Double Trouble Physical Book tier is for those individuals who like to give books as presents on holidays and birthdays. (i.e. my kind of people.) An added bonus of this tier is that both books will be signed by myself and one of the artists. For a small, added donation we will personalize our signatures/leave an inscription for you and include your name in the acknowledgements. That's definitely something to be proud of!
The Custom Portrait Tiers are two things I wasn't expecting to be able to secure, but I'm thrilled by this unique opportunity for our backers. Roger L. Beckett is one of the writers who will be contributing to the anthology. He is also a talented portrait artist, and he has graciously agreed to donate some of his work to make this book happen. Those who back at this level will be able to select a figure they would like a portrait of. (It doesn't have to be horror related, but if you're backing us we assume you have something of an interest in the genre.) Before you pledge you can find more of his work here or by clicking on any of the images below.
The second custom portrait tier is offered by our own Jonathan Moeller/Mark of the Beast. I'm including a few samples of his work below. He is also the artist who is sponsoring the fantastic horror tattoo/horror portrait tier.
There are several original artwork tiers which are unique in that they are for original pieces featured in the book. Each one of these pieces will be shipped to the winner, and includes an electronic copy of the ebook. (You may upgrade to a physical copy if you so desire.)
Jenna Weaver/Fine Line Artist has yet again offered more of her fantastic artwork to the project. Although only one of the original pieces which will be featured in the book remains and is one of the higher priced tiers, we now also have 5 original/custom art pieces to offer! Three sizes are available: 8x10, 11x14, and 14x17. What type of art are they? Hometown/favorite state, province or country art! These are the cheapest custom artwork tiers available by the most popular artist associated with the project, so don't miss your chance to snatch these up!
The Jonathan Moeller/Mark of the Beast features a character from one of our short story contributions entitled 'Makin' Groceries'. It features a woman mid transformation from human to beast, and is a gorgeous colored pencil drawing.
Lance Graves is an accomplished artist who has successfully funded Kickstarters of his own, and who has graciously agreed to create a piece for the book. This pledge tier will be for the original piece he is creating for the book, so a truly one of a kind piece of art!
The Jenna Weaver/Fine Line Art piece is the original bristol paper creation for 'Bad Neighborhood' which must be seen to be believed. At this time it is a work in progress, but you can view her work at the linked Facebook portfolio or consider the below examples. Two original pieces have been completed and are pictured below. Since this tier sold out within the first few hours of the crowdfunding campaign, Ms. Weaver has decided to donate the other two original pieces which will be included in the anthology!! This is a fine opportunity for any art collector, horror or otherwise!
The indie bookstore/generous book giver tier has a special place in my heart. I love independent book stores and try to visit the ones in my area, and in areas that I visit, as often as I can. It is for that reason that I am offering independent book stores a price break. Instead of paying $25 plus extra shipping for individual books, they can get books at a more reasonable cost for distribution. As a bonus, these books will all be numbered and signed by myself and Jonathan Moeller (the previously referenced artist) at no additional cost. Plus, you/your shop will receive thanks in the acknowledgements page.
A tier not for the faint of heart! While 'Bad Neighborhood' promises to send chills down your spine and turn your stomach, at this backer level we'll make you bleed. In addition to being an incredibly talented, classically trained artist, Jonathan Moeller of Mark of the Beast is also a gifted tattoo artist who specializes in portrait work.
In keeping with the theme of the project, Jonathan is offering the fruit of his 10 years experience to a backer in the form of a horror portrait tattoo. During his career he has inked everything from zombie Bettie Page to Flyboy, to Leatherface, so the possibilities are truly endless for any horror fan!
The piece can be black and gray or full color, which makes it between a $350-500 value, depending on your preferred placement and color desired.
Of course there are some limitations on this particular tier. The recipient/backer must be 18 years of age or older. The tattoo must be a horror themed portrait piece of a typical portrait size and placement (Not super tiny; we want the piece to come out cleanly! Also, it must not be a full back/full thigh/etc. piece.) In addition, the recipient must travel to Jonathan in Harrisonburg, VA, USA.
If you have questions regarding this tier, please contact me prior to backing. Note: For those traveling who would require accommodations, I would be able to negotiate a discounted rate at a hotel nearby for your convenience.
Risks and challenges
The book is essentially finished, so the risk to backers is incredibly low. The hours of copy editing and line editing have been completed and approved by the writers, the art is well underway and set for completion by mid November. The only thing that remains is formatting the book for print and electronic distribution, checking the proofs, and then scheduling the launch. That's it! The book is set for early December release, which is why the Kickstarter ends in early December.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
