FOUR HORSEMEN STUDIO'S GOTHITROPOLIS RAVENS KICKSTARTER
Four Horsemen Studios’ Gothitropolis Ravens Kickstarter is a project to ensure that our Gothitropolis Raven action figure series can go into full production, and this fan favorite group of figures can end up in your hands!
What are these cool figures? The Raven and his compatriots are the newest figures in our Gothitropolis line of highly detailed six inch scaled action figures. The Raven was chosen by fans as the winner of our FANtastic Exclusive project which allows fans to vote on all aspects of our next figure. Our team here have spent hundreds of hours of meticulously sculpting, fabricating, and painting to create the spectacular prototypes for this line. This project is an absolute labor of love for everyone involved here at Four Horsemen Studios.
THE SPECIFICS
These will be approximately 6” tall (which puts them in scale with previous Gothitropolis releases like our Scarabus and the TimeKeeper figures). He has 34 points of articulation. He’s got two sets of interchangeable feet (one set in an open “attack pose” and the second set has a “battle grip” for wielding weapons). He has this detailed scythe/staff weapon and a signature belt loaded with supplies and relics. This figure has an intricate paint scheme that contains hundreds of paint applications.
THE ASSORTMENT
We've created 12 prototypes in total here at the studio based largely on fan requests for various species of birds and other fantasy creatures. Each variant features a unique head sculpture, and it’s own gorgeous paint scheme that perfectly reflects the character’s species and theme.
For the initial Kickstarter we are starting with six figures in total. Of course we didn’t want to shut out the possibilities for all 12 figures, so we are offering the remaining 6 figures as stretch goals.

WHY KICKSTARTER???
Here at Four Horsemen Studios we create toy lines for some of the biggest properties out there, but we also have a passion for creating our own in-house brands and action figure lines. The biggest obstacle that we’ve hit with creating those figures is: “how do you build a fan base for a property that is being created from scratch?” This is where our concept of FANtastic Exclusive comes in...
FANtastic Exclusive is a project that we created back in 2005 that allowed fans to vote on all aspects of what the next figure we produced would end up like. Fans chose the line, the character, the scale, the points of articulation, and many of the other important stages of creating an action figure. FANtastic Exclusive gave fans a reason to be excited about the lines that we were working on even without a cartoon or movie to promote it, because the helped in the creation of the action figures.
We had great runs for 3 years with FAN Ex. Things were going well. We hit a roadblock, though, when it came time to produce the fourth winner of FANtastic Exclusive: The Raven. Over the years manufacturing prices have continually increased. The tooling prices (which is the price for the steel molds used in China) have in some cases doubled since we started producing figures, and the individual figure prices have sometimes quadrupled! When we got a price quote back from our factory in China we realized that there was no way we could produce these figures without help.
Then a friend of ours introduced us to Kickstarter, and we found a way to get that help. A fan funded project made so much sense for The Raven. Fans have been with us from the beginning, and now they truly have the power to make this figure a reality!
Risks and challenges
The biggest possible obstacle that we might face is that one of the factories that we're using for production over in Hong Kong or China shuts down in the middle of our production run and we lose the steel molds that would be used to create the figures.
This actually happened to us a few years ago when we were running our Ramathorr figures for our property, 7th Kingdom. The factory had suddenly closed down and we were unable to contact those responsible. Fortunately, because of our experience with dealing with this sort of thing and through our strong connections throughout the toy industry, we were able to retrieve the missing molds and have then moved to a new factory to continue the production on Ramathorr and his variants.
Even though going back into production on those figures cost us an extra $16,000.00 out of our own pockets to finish and caused the delivery of the figures to come months later than we'd originally planned, we constantly kept the fans who'd pre-ordered the figures in the loop as to what was going on, always reassuring them that we were dedicated to eventually get those figures into their hands, even if we had to go overseas to run the machines making them ourselves.
Now, after years of manufacturing our own runs of action figures with various overseas factories, not only do we have the experience to take care of an issue such as this should it arise, but we're also working on this new project with one of the largest and most reputable manufacturers in the industry who themselves have worked with some of the largest and most successful toy companies on the planet in taking a toy line all the way from it's original prototype form to a beautifully packaged and high quality final product on collector's shelves worldwide.
