FOUR COLOR EULOGY is a film about friends & comic books, but this is really A FILM ABOUT FAMILY.

Chris gives up his life and his career to come home to care for his mother who has ovarian cancer.

We hear about people with cancer and what they go through, but rarely do we think about what the caretaker goes through, what changes happen in their lives… This film explores some of that, with a lighter spin on it.

This film was written BY FAMILY - Jason Contini and his father, John Contini, started the project, writing the story. More writers have gotten involved, and even those guys are considered 'family' - the ones you choose, if not those you are born into.

It is also a film about comic books.

Many films about comic book geeks go straight for the stereotype. Yes, Four Color Eulogy is a film about comic book geeks but these are not the non-social, living-in-their-mother's-basement, Hollywood version of the geek. The characters in Four Color Eulogy are real people, with real problems, and real lives, who just happen to also be very into Comic Books.

As the producers of this film, we have decided that giving these types of characters a voice is long-overdue. We would love for you to become part of the team that makes this happen.

The goal of this Kickstarter campaign is to PAY ALL OF OUR ACTORS for their time on set and to feed them well.

Our goal - with  your help - is to raise $10,900 to cover those expenses during our 20 days of filming.

As filmmakers, we are experienced in creating projects that are cost effective yet have high production value. This comes from a background in big-budget production, so we know what it takes to really make a movie, and are able to re-create that on a much smaller scale. We try to do things the way the studios do, but without all of the expense.

We have some local backers who are supporting this project, companies donating goods and services, and we are each putting our own money, equipment and time into the project, so we are on our way to funding this film. But we need more to make it the most professional production it can be.

As professional filmmakers and artists ourselves, we know what it is like to be asked to work for free.  On this film, we don't want to ask that of others.

If we are able to raise more than our goal, additional money will go to paying the crew what they are worth, upgrading some of our equipment, covering our art department expenses and off-setting our production insurance, paying for film festival entry fees, post-production/editing, music rights/licensing, etc.

Four Color Eulogy is a comedy/drama about family that will be filmed in South St. Louis the summer of 2014. We are a joint collaboration of two production companies: Archlight Studios, and Pirate Pictures. Staffed by a second-generation actor/writer/artist and a seasoned writer who occasionally acts, Archlight Studios has created an epic limited-comic series and a variety of web content. Pirate Pictures has been around since 2002 and has produced two feature films, a huge pile of commercials and industrial films, and small pile of award-winning shorts.

WYATT WEED:
Four Color Eulogy will be shot and directed by Wyatt Weed, a Los Angeles-trained director. Wyatt found work as both an actor and an effects technician in films and TV series such as STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, PREDATOR 2, STAR TREK: VOYAGER,  LORD OF ILLUSIONS, JAY-JAY THE JET PLANE, MUPPETS FROM SPACE, MISSION:  IMPOSSIBLE 2, FLIGHT OF THE INTRUDER, and RED PLANET. In 2006, he returned to St. Louis to join Pirate Pictures and began writing and directing award-winning short films and commercials. Wyatt made his feature directing debut in 2010 with the vampire thriller SHADOWLAND

JASON CONTINI:
Archlight's Jason Contini first came in contact with Pirate Pictures when he auditioned for and landed one of the lead roles in SHADOWLAND, Pirate's 2010 award-winning vampire-thriller. Archlight and the Pirates decided to join forces, bring a pet film project of Jason's to life, and shoot that project in our home town of St. Louis.

GAYLE GALLAGHER: Gayle is the producer of two award-winning feature films, the TV show STREETSCAPE, and numerous short films and corporate video projects. FOUR COLOR EULOGY will be her third feature film.

NICHOLAS J. HEARNE: Nick is one of the writers and a producer on Four Color Eulogy.  He is co-founder of Archlight Studios and is the writer on the comic book series LEGACIES END and TUXEDO CITY.

ROBERT CLARK: Bob is the all-around handy guy to have on set, from Grip/Electric to set construction, Bob has us covered.

If you haven't already, please take a moment and watch the video above. It will give you a good impression of who we are and what we've done.

FOUR COLOR EULOGY follows Chris, a thirty-something aspiring comic book creator. When Chris learns that his single mother, Carol, is ill, he and his girlfriend Anne move back home and help care for her. With his life completely disrupted, Chris is forced to face his mother's mortality and that nagging old childhood question: Who was his father, and why wasn't he around?

With the help of his childhood friend Brian, (a militant comic book collector and pop-culture geek), and his old mentor Rich, (a bartender with a creative secret), Chris will have to determine what is more important: The hero's origin, or his ongoing adventure?

While steeped in humor and pop culture references, FOUR COLOR EULOGY explores this very real dilemma of not knowing what to do in life and shows us that it's never too late to let go of the past and it’s NEVER a good time to laugh at death…even when it’s funny.

This is one of the questions that is asked regularly of films, indie or otherwise.  Let us introduce you to some of our actors:

 JASON CONTINI ("Chris")
"Chris" is the main character in the film who has had to return to his hometown to care for his ailing mother.
Jason began acting at the age of 3 and has been seen in over 75 productions across the Mid-West. He has worked with such theatres as The Muny, Stages, St. Louis Opera, The St. Louis Rep's Imaginary Theatre Company, Avalon Theatre Company, Okoboji Summer Theatre, Westport Playhouse and Dramatic License, just to name a few. He has been seen in such plays as GODSPELL (Jesus), HAMLET (Laertes), LITTLE BOSNIA (Faris), THE NERD (Willum), ALL MY SONS (Chris) and MACBETH (MacBeth). Jason has also starred in over a dozen feature films including the acclaimed indie vampire film SHADOWLAND as vampire hunter Julian, the war film KHYBER, which he also co-produced, the romantic comedy THE ANNIVERSARY for director John Campea of AMC Movie News, and APRIL IS MY RELIGION. In addition to theatre and film, he is also co-founded Archlight Comics and Archlight Studios with creative collaborator Nicholas J. Hearne and is the artist for two comic books: LEGACIES END and SUPER CAT. Jason is also one of the writers and producers of FOUR COLOR EULOGY.

JESSICA LANEY ("Anne")
"Anne" is Chris' girlfriend who has been friends with Brian and Chris since they were kids.
Jessica holds a BFA in Theatre from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and previously studied Shakespeare in Performance at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. For five years Jessica studied and performed in NY in school and with her short-lived theatre company before returning to her hometown to teach. She is currently the head of the theatre department as teacher and director at local public high school. She was recently seen as Cordelia St. Louis Actor's Studio's production of King Lear, but this is her first film since college.

NICHOLAS J. HEARNE ("Brian")
"Brian" is Chris' best friend, a comic geek, and a pop-culture nerd.
Nick is a writer and actor living in St. Louis, MO. Nick grew up in St. Louis, but at the age of 14, Nick's family moved to a small town in Southern Missouri called Piedmont. During this time, Nick discovered a passion for acting by competing on the school speech team for which he won multiple first place trophies and began acting in such plays as YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU (as Grandpa), TURMOILS IN TUCSON (as Tom Trueheart), AN EVENING OF EDGAR ALLEN POE (Actor #1), and LONG LIVE ROCK N ROLL (as King Kenny Kool). Nick moved back to St. Louis in 2000 with his grandma Wilma and began training and studying his craft as a writer primarily focusing on screenplays and comic books. In 2002 Nick returned to the stage in a production of GODSPELL (as Nick the Apostle) as well as such films as KILLERS BY NATURE, and FALLEN SKYES.  Recently Nick co-founded Archlight Studios and Archlight Comics with his long time friend and collaborator Jason Contini.  In addition to the film work Nick is also currently the writer on Archlight's comic book series LEGACIES END as well as TUXEDO CITY with longtime collaborator Nathan Ohlendorf.

Update: Since we have created this Kickstarter campaign, we have been doing a lot of casting, and it has been going AMAZING. We are thrilled by the collection of Award-Winning actors we now have attached to this project!!!

AMY LOUI ("Carol")Drawn to the theater and all its possibilities at an early age, Amy Loui grew up with family influences that eventually became career beacons. Her father was an award-winning director in the early years of live television and theater as an actor, director and teacher.  Amy followed his lead, becoming a full-fledged member of Actors Equity soon after graduating from Saint Louis University.  Film appearances include roles in WHITE PALACE, KING OF THE HILL, A WILL OF THEIR OWN and a featured lead on a widely popular and repeated segment of YOU’RE ON CANDID CAMERA.  Amy has continued to grow her theater credits, performing with local favorites Upstream Theater, St. Louis Actors Studio, New Jewish Theatre, Mustard Seed Theatre, The Black Rep, Insight Theatre, and Imaginary Theater Company.  Nominated for multiple acting honors over the past few years, she is the recipient of an inaugural Artist Support Grant from the Regional Arts Commission, which allowed her to study with Russian director Sergei Ostrenko in Italy this spring.  Upcoming roles include Effy in  SPITFIRE GRILL: THE MUSICAL, opening this August at Insight Theatre, and Mrs. Frank in THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK at New Jewish Theatre, opening in October.

JOHN CONTINI ("Rich")For the part of seasoned bar owner (and closeted artist) Rich Sassetti, actor John Contini was the perfect choice. An avid collector and film fanatic, John dabbled in comic art himself before pursing a career as an actor. John has worked with: the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, The Muny, The Black Rep, St. Louis Actors’ Studio, and Avalon Theatre to name a few. He even managed to slip in a small role in the St. Louis cult-favorite “Escape from New York”. Some of his favorite roles include: Shylock in “The Merchant of Venice”, Creon in Jean Anouilh’s “Antigone”, and won a 2010 Kevin Kline Award for Best Actor for John Barrymore in “Barrymore”. He also picked up a 2013 Broadway World Award for the title role in “King Lear”.

Risks and challenges

As a production team, Pirate Pictures has been around for a while and done a lot, but more importantly, we have dealt with many different challenges, from unexpected death to injury to heat exhaustion. There are weather delays, loss of locations, tempermental actors, and equipment failure, but through any and all of these obstacles the need to remain calm and stay versatile is most important.

At the core of our preparedness is training and experience. A strong background in narrative film, industrials, and television has taught us what to expect. We also know what to give up and not give up when things have to be cut. In short, we're good at recovering from set backs, and good at picking up the pace after unexpected delays.

When it comes to things that are beyond our control, such as the weather, certain locations, and equipment failure, we always have options. A second choice location is just smart. An alternate set to shoot on in case of rain delay is wise. Knowing the availability of matched or similar gear is also essential. Carrying production insurance gives us peace of mind.

We spend a good part of pre-production trying to figure out what can go wrong. We hope it never does, but just in case, we have a plan in mind. Besides, the only thing worse than a production that doesn't go according to plan is the one that never gets completed, and that hasn't happened to us. There's always a way, and we always find it.
