About

HOPE is a film about the resilience of the human spirit in the face of unprecedented adversity. Told by Liberians themselves, it is the story of how this small nation is working to overcome poverty, civil war and, now, Ebola. No nation is immune from Ebola and we believe there are valuable lessons to be learned from this tiny country of just 4 million people about not only surviving, but thriving. We want to bring these inspiring voices to the world in this film.

Liberia sees itself as the 51st state of America. Founded 168 years ago by freed slaves returning to West Africa, it is the only African nation not colonized by a European country. Its values and government structure and are those of America; freedom and liberty for all. English is the primary language.

After 14 years of senseless civil war, the women of Liberia brought peace to their nation in 2003, as documented in the award-winning film Pray the Devil Back to Hell. In 2005 Liberia elected the first female president of an African nation, an historic event in which a trained economist beat the local soccer star. Hope came to Liberia. Even though the war had killed 250,000 people, and even though 75% of the women of the country had been raped.

The Foundation for Women brought it's proven microfinance program to Liberia in 2007. With 85% of the population living on less than $1/day, microfinance provided a much needed source of capital to the poorest of the poor. Since that beginning, the Foundation for Women has given more than 15,000 loans beginning with US$100. In 2013, the Foundation began providing microfinance capital to low-fee independent schools in an effort to get more children in school; Liberia has the largest percentage of school age children out of school of any country on the planet. To date the Foundation has more than 70 partner schools, touching the lives of more than 20,000 children. And this program is growing rapidly each month.

All seemed positive until 2014 – Ebola, an unprecedented crisis. Death. Fear. Closing of all schools. Economic devastation - and a story that could have happened in any country. Yet the tenacity and resiliency of the human spirit survived. Liberians are once again rebuilding their country after more than 5000 deaths and the challenges of helping more than 11,000 people who survived Ebola, including many orphans.

We have much to learn from these treasured members of our human family. HOPE is their story, told in their own words. Remarkable. Inspiring. A story which must be heard by our entire human family.

Risks and challenges

We do not foresee any particular challenges. The film will be freely available on our website, YouTube and Vimeo once it is done. Our goal is to bring the voices of the Liberian people to the world.
