The Kickstarter campaign for Dance Prints has ended! Thank you so, so much to everyone who supported it. If you're interested in exploring the art and/or furthering it by becoming a part of the art-making process and purchasing the artwork direct-from-studio, you still can! Please visit:

Dance Prints! The ground-breaking photography series by artist Jesús Chapa-Malacara (that's me) and some of the most ridiculously talented and accomplished dancers around. "Groundbreaking?" See!
What you see in that photograph (and the ones below) is not the result of Photoshop but instead of true innovation in old-school photography. "Really?" Yes, really! And, amazingly, no one's ever really done work like this before! "For real?" Well, I didn't invent the lighting technique (though I'd never seen it employed when I first started doing these photos). But Dance Prints is not only cool photographs, it's also the study of dance. Every photo represents one complete movement in its respective dance styles, all the little details dancers spend years on perfecting to be able to say, "OK, this is a complete triple headspin" or "This is what a perfect retiré looks like." It's an art project and a reference. This campaign is actually the next stage in turning these photos into art book compendiums of dance languages, by amassing the photos before going into production.
For us: the chance to make the next stage of the project possible. We've only scratched the surface. We want to make the photos bigger, better, more expansive, soon-to-be-classics in the world of photography. And that costs a lot of money: big spaces (in New York: $$$!!!!), dancers and crew costs, equipment, insurances, fees, taxes and REWARDS! "Rewards?"
For you: Rewards! You support the campaign by signing up to score some rad art if we reach our goal. You could also score a visit to the shoot, a dinner with me & other creative people, even a shoot for yourself!
"IF we reach our goal?" That's right: your pledge gets charged only after the campaign period is over, and only if we reach our goal. That way, we don't end up on the hook for something we can't actually produce, with your money in our pockets. It's a win-win, genius idea for art production funding!
But we've only got a limited time to get it done, so you have to pledge before the funding period ends. Preferably today so we can capitalize on the momentum you'll bring. And so you can get the word to your friends about it ASAP. Join us now!
The Back Story?
As a young photographer living in New York, I was in a rut. This is my break out, and hopefully my "big break!"
In New York, it's easy to start feeling stuck because you need so much money just to get by. So you take any job that comes your way. I was tired and unfulfilled by that though and I knew I had to make my mark in order to get hired to do more exciting stuff. It occurred to me that maybe the secret was figuring out how to combine two of my biggest passions: photo and dance. In a new way.
I'm a visual artist now, but I used to be a professional ballet dancer myself. Here's the thing about being a dancer. Whereas most people think of dance primarily as the cool tricks and poses, dancers spend a lot more time thinking about the movement in between than the actual poses. So I kept thinking, how can I tell that story?
I had an idea. Calling in a few one-time favors for space and dance talent, my idea worked! From that, the first part, the ballet series Esprit de Corps, was born. Since then, I've added breakers, wackers and house dancers. And the possibilities are nearly endless! I'm psyched to try out more styles, more concepts and just friggin' run with it! That's why I'm here, on Kickstarter.
So, you, yes you, wanna help me really get my break while scoring some awesome stuff? Stuff that'll make you smile and feel inspired every time you look at it? Become a backer!
I'm a young photographer and former professional dancer who's looking for my big break and the chance to have a budget to work on expanding this idea--photography unlike any done before. You can be a part of the beginning of something really amazing by becoming a backer and scoring art that'll inspire you every day.
So...check out the rewards to your right (and below), get in on the fun and let's make this thing happen. You rock!

Risks and challenges
Among the biggest challenges we'll face is scheduling. These productions are big and between getting all the right bodies in the same place at the same time, convening all of the equipment and finding suitable shoot spaces that are available to coincide with those times, it can get tricky. We've done it before though and we're confident we can do it again.
As for fulfillment: I've already set up arrangements with all relevant vendors, all people with whom I've worked in the past and trust. That's huge. I'm also giving the reward turnaround a good leeway, so that'll help a ton.
Of course, surpassing our goal would give us additional flexibility with space selection, the ability to shoot on additional days and just generally more wiggle room. With that in mind, we ask that after becoming a backer, you spread your enthusiasm about the project far and wide so that we can make this thing as smooth and fabulous as possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The Posters are sized 12"x18" for the time being. If there's the chance to get a bulk discount, there may be room to make them bigger. As it stands, increasing the size would require increasing the price of the reward.
Yep! You can choose your print options from either the work you see here or from the work that'll get made as a result of this Kickstarter campaign. The new work will all be done by mid-April to early May. If you're certain you'll want one of the prints already here, this means you can get your Print reward shipped by mid-March. If you would rather wait for the new photos to decide, that's great too and those rewards will go out mid-May. If you change your mind about waiting, the current options will are shippable any time after mid-March. (After the campaign is over, there'll be a backer survey where all this can be sorted out; please keep your eyes open for it and make sure to respond!)
Absolutely! Though Kickstarter doesn't allow you to choose multiple things during the pledge process, the fulfillment process is entirely controlled by me afterward. So you can change what you want later provided it's within the same pledge range, or pledge an amount that equals the sum of multiple rewards and indicate in the backer survey how you'd like your pledge to be allocated. Please feel free to message me here or email any questions or concerns you may have: firstname.lastname@example.org
