Sauriana Miniatures Game
A Skirmish Tabletop wargame focusing on dinosaurs, steampunk, and pulp action with a heavy focus on narrative play.
Sauriana is a 32mm tabletop skirmish game set in an alternate 19th century, where dinosaurs once again roam the earth, paleontology drives the economy, and new world powers lurk in the shadows.
Players build their band of daring and intrepid agents, and battle against their opponents in a fast-paced, narrative gameplay experience where fortune favors the bold and hiring the right men, women, and beasts for the job mean the difference between success and failure, life and death.
Gameplay in Sauriana is straightforward and intuitive, and getting into the game is affordable. The goal of this Kickstarter is to launch our game in its most complete form - successful funding will allow us to produce our starter box for the game, as well as faction starters to get players into the game from the ground up. Most of our initial miniatures are sculpted, molded, and cast, ready for launch, and any funding in excess of our goal will go towards expanding our miniature range to provide even more great models for players and hobbyists.
- 32mm Scale - compatible with most game ranges and terrain.
- High quality multi-part resin miniatures cast by our partners at Secret Weapon Miniatures, and sculpted by some of the best in the industry.
- A normal game will number 3-10 miniatures per player.
- We make it easy for players to get into the game! This Kickstarter is meant to fund both the starter set, and faction starters - everything you need to get started in one box.
- 3 x 3 game table is suitable for normal play, though the game can be expanded with more miniatures per side and more terrain.
- Objective-based gameplay with a heavy narrative focus.
- Rules for Expeditions - Campaign play to chronicle the journey of your Posse, encouraging you to personalize your force.
- Assets and Equipment add a massive amount of tactical depth and synergy, equipping your Expedition with the right weapons, armor, tools and instincts to maximize their potential in the game.
- Unique D20 system for simple, effective gameplay basics.
- Dinosaurs! Steampunk Automatons! Time Travel!
A Game Like No Other...
My name is Sam Nolton, and I've been developing Sauriana for almost four years. It's gone through a number of iterations, including our planned 54mm version I attempted to raise funds for in 2016. I've listened to the community's feedback, and put a lot of work into bringing to life what I believe is the best possible version of this game.
The miniatures, aesthetic, narrative, and themes of Sauriana are all extensions of myself, it's the game I've always wanted to play- and I hope it will appeal to others as well. Drawing inspiration from a number of genres, as well as real-world history (most notably the Great Dinosaur Rush or "Bone Wars" of the 19th century), I am truly excited to present this game to the Kickstarter crowd with the hopes of bringing it to life.
Our pledge levels are designed to give backers real choice and control over their purchase. You decide which faction to play, which models you get, and how much you want to invest in getting started playing Sauriana!
At the Expedition Funding level (below), you can get right into the game for $35 with the full Sauriana Rulebook, a Faction Starter of your choice, and access to any unlocked add-on items. The rulebook contains the full game rules, in soft cover and full color, detailing every aspect of gameplay and showing off some of our beautifully detailed resin miniatures. Your Faction Starter contains everything you need to build a starting band of Agents, with 3-6 resin miniatures (depending on Faction), stat cards, D20 dice, and a small hobby guide. It’s the perfect way to dive into the game head-on!
The Cope Collective excels at resilience and ranged combat, an implacable advance of Automatons supported by Engineers and Scientists to keep them operational, provide unique buffs, and get them into the fray faster.
The Othniellians specialize in quick melee-oriented combat, and they have quite a few tricks up their sleeves to get them there. Unique "Saurogenesis" Assets can transform their Agents into monstrous powerhouses, while their underworld connections secured through contacts at Helltrench can turn the tide of any battle in their favor.
The Explorer’s Club is an extremely flexible, versatile faction. Many of their Agents make use of terrain in interesting ways, representing their status as stealthy hunters or tribal pathfinders. The faction also makes the most use of “tamed" prehistoric beasts that can track down their prey, sniff out hidden models, and gang up on big threats.
The World's Fair is your mercenary faction. Add Agents from the World's Fair to your Othniellians, Cope Collective, or Explorer's Club band to "fill the gaps" in your tactics, or you can go all-in and build a band purely out of World's Fair Agents - the only limit is your hobbying imagination! Truly the jack-of-all-trades faction, the World’s Fair is a great place to start for any player - either build a gang all your own, or divvy up the models amongst your Explorer’s Club, Cope Collective, or Othniellians band.
For this Kickstarter campaign, we're focusing on Wave 1 of our Sauriana miniatures line - the first 20 or so models intended for our game, as well as of course the rules to play! I've spent the last four years getting these miniatures sculpted and ready for manufacture - your donation to this campaign goes towards full-scale production (we've already done most of the hard work - getting them sculpted, moulded, and cast!).
Every model you see in the above lineup (in addition to a couple others) is available as part of this campaign, either in the Faction Starters detailed above or individually.
Risks and challenges
We're a new, relatively untested company, and have basically been bootstrapping this project for the last three years. We don't have a lot of resources just yet (hence the need for Kickstarter), and don't have access to or money for a lot of the fancier elements many companies have - ad campaigns, video production, etc.
We're a very small company - hell, I'm not even sure why I keep saying "we're" considering I (Sam Nolton) am the company's owner and only employee. I wrote the narrative for Sauriana over the last three years, I wrote the rules to make it an intriguing, easy-to-learn game with a lot of tactical depth, and I designed the miniatures from the ground up - the only thing I didn't do is the concept art, digital sculpting, and manufacturing, for which I have hired freelancers whose work has been just incredible. I couldn't have done it without the talents of so many helpful people, and I would be remiss if I didn't mention them.
To put it shortly: I've got a monolithic vision for this company and the game I'm developing, but I need backers' help to bring it to life.
My first attempt at funding this game failed, and though I feel I learned a lot of valuable lessons from the community, there's still always a risk. I've done everything in my power to negate those risks, and I truly believe the new iteration of Sauriana will really blow people away.
Relying on outside manufacturing and other elements does put this project at some rest, however, there have already been a few delays here and there with getting miniatures printed and cast due to unforeseen circumstances, and that always throws a wrench in the works.
Fulfilling Kickstarter backer goals is going to take some time to get underway if funded, and can run into the same delays, but I am confident that everything is possible with the plan set in place, and of course, we will keep our backers and customers up to date as the campaign goes on.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
