Delightful oracle cards with the antique fortune telling system named after Mlle Lenormand. An amazingly accurate tarot alternative.

1889 - a Lenormand oracle by ForTheSeekers

The first Lenormand pack I ran across was a c.1926 Carreras set collected from cigarette packs. I was researching cartomancy and playing cards for another project and found them by chance. I was instantly enamored by their appearance and knew that I had to have them.

I had no interest in learning how to read these cards. I wanted to collect them. They were foreign to me and after seeing the giant spreads using the entire pack of 36 cards, they seemed overwhelming. I assumed the system would be daunting to learn.

I couldn't have been more wrong. I learned quickly that I could get a clear and literal answer to almost any question with only two cards and it's easy to understand.

The Lenormand cards and their simplicity are truly inspiring and I'm still astounded by their candid accuracy. Creating a traditional style Lenormand for ForTheSeekers™ was a project I could not resist.

The system for reading with the Lenormand cards is pretty simple and straightforward. Each card has its own list of keywords (provided in the booklet that accompanies the full size 1889 deck) and the keywords are what each card means individually.

Even though each card has its own individual list of keywords, the cards are usually only read with two or more cards merged together before they can begin to reveal answers to your questions. This is because the meanings of each card change a little based on the cards that are surrounding it. In a basic line of three cards usually the first card is a subject or action and the following cards describe what the first card is doing.

Here is an example...

A friend is coming with news about a wonderful surprise or gift.
A friend is coming with news about a wonderful surprise or gift.
News is coming about a friend with a wonderful surprise or gift.
News is coming about a friend with a wonderful surprise or gift.

Lenormand cards are read by stringing them together in lines to form a story that is very similar to looking at scenes from a story board. The cards are actually telling you a line of events based on your question.

The smaller spreads include merging 2 cards and then on to reading in lines of 3, 5 and 7 cards. The larger traditional spreads use boxes and are read in rows, lines, columns, diagonally, boxed, knighted (2 up and one over like a knight would move on a chess board) and more. The large spreads use anywhere from 9 to all 36 cards in a spread, the largest being the grand tableau.

Unlike tarot, Lenormand cards are traditionally meant to be read in the upright position without reverse meanings.

Use small lines of 2 -5 Lenormand cards to get you started. Once you’re familiar with the cards and practice with them a little, they really are a lot of fun to use and the accuracy is uncanny!

Intro to L'amour est un oiseau rebelle, Carmen c.1875

Quand je vous aimerai? Ma foi, je ne sais pas, Peut-être jamais, peut-être demain. Mais pas aujourd'hui, c'est certain!

When I'll love you? My Faith, I don't know, Maybe never, maybe tomorrow. But not today, that's for sure!

Though there is a lot more to the story, very briefly and in a nutshell...many of the emblematic figures seen in the Lenormand cards appeared in a 32 card German fortune telling playing cards set published by Duremouri in 1793.

Sometime around 1798, German businessman and designer Johann Kaspar Hechtel published das Spiel der Hoffnung, the Game of Hope, "With a new Deck of 36 illuminated character cards".

The Game of Hope is a 36 card betting game that verges on a cross between our modern Chutes and Ladders and Milton Bradley's The Game of Life, only played with dice and the possibility of losing your valuables. The cards could also be used for divination if one were so inclined. (Printed translated instructions included with each full size deck. The 1889 cards and a pair of dice are needed to play the game.)

The game was later renamed after famous French fortune-teller, Marie Anne Adelaide Lenormand shortly after her passing in June of 1843 when she was said to have had these 36 familiar cards among her possessions when she died.

Since then, the cards have been exclusively marketed for fortune telling purposes under the pseudonym Lenormand.

Reading Lenormand cards is nothing like reading tarot cards. The Lenormand system is fairly easy to use and amazingly accurate. With a little time and practice you'll be reading the Lenormand system and LOVING it.

Thank you, Matthias Hoschek https://www.facebook.com/dice.cup.museum for all of your hard work in translating the old German script of the 1798 Das Spiel der Hoffnung to English. The original document currently resides at The British Museum.
