About

Have you ever heard a song you badly wanted to play on the piano?

We certainly did. We enrolled for some formal lessons.

Much to our dismay, these lessons involved learning a bunch of music theory and basic songs. It was apparent that we had months to go before we could even attempt to play the songs we wanted. The lessons themselves were rather serious and devoid of fun.

Seeing a lack of progress, we felt inadequate and gave up; our favorite songs left unlearned.

If this sounds familiar to you, read on as we just might have the solution.

What if there was a better way?

Can you think of an activity that you effortlessly engaged in, and eventually mastered? The process was so fun that you didn’t realise you were developing some serious skills.

In many ways, video games fit the bill. The hours seem to whiz by as you crushed the online matchmaking ranks, crafted elaborate blocky castles, farmed gold quality crops, and finally won the chicken dinner.

Why is it so enjoyable to master a video game? Could this be applied to learning the piano?

This became an obsession for us. We pored through various papers and books on effective learning strategies and habits. As it turns out, there are 5 key elements that video games get right:

  • Relevance
  • Visual Feedback
  • Checkpoints
  • Progression
  • Social Engagement

These video game design elements formed the basis for The ForteRight Arcade - a complete gaming system that teaches you the piano!

Relevance

If you enjoy first person shooters but are only allowed to play racing games, you would probably not have a lot of fun.

It’s the same with learning music. Being forced to power through a boring song list at piano school is a grind. You should be able to learn whatever song you like.

The Arcade connects wirelessly to a companion app on your phone, where you have access to our music library. Browse songs in multiple genres or search for what you want to play.

We’ve found that playing a song you’re interested in makes it more likely you’d persist and master the skills needed to perform the song beautifully.

Visual Feedback

Video games are a very visceral experience. The game reacts immediately to your actions on-screen. Your Italian plumber jumps onto a turtle, and it instantly retreats into its shell.

The ForteRight Arcade breaks down songs with a similar system. In Practice Mode, the song does not progress unless you play the right note. The display indicates when an incorrect note is played.

Most of us are visual learners (65% of the population). By combining visual feedback with the piano, we make learning easier than relying only on auditory cues.

Checkpoints

Imagine if you had to play through an entire video game without any saves or checkpoints. You soldiered through 2 hours of intense play before encountering the final boss. Then in a minor lapse of attention, you fall off a ledge and it’s Game Over. How many times could you restart an entire game before finally rage-quitting?

With the exception of hardcore roguelike gamers, most of us would not put up with that.

Video game designers break up a game into distinct checkpoints to ease us into the game’s challenges. Restarting at a checkpoint multiple times allows us to slowly master defeating a level’s boss, even at near impossible difficulties.

The Arcade breaks down a song in the same way. Learn the left hand or right hand part first. Then the first and second verse. Then finally the boss chorus. Now put it all together and play the whole song through!

(Or attempt to learn the whole song in a single sitting since you’re so hardcore. It’s your game, play it your way.)

Progression

Have you ever returned to an earlier level of a video game? Or purposely played in lower ranks in a competitive multiplayer game (aka smurfing)?

If you have, you’d realise how easy it is to beat the earlier levels or to completely rekt noobs. You’ve come a long way and felt a sense of satisfaction with your progress.

Measuring progression is a cornerstone to improving at any skill. Runners note their 10K times. Gym rats know how much they can bench. Cubers record the milliseconds it takes them to solve a Rubik’s puzzle. Surpassing our previous bests motivates us to continue learning and bettering ourselves.

At ForteRight, we recognise the importance of this and implemented a scoring system to measure one’s performance. Note accuracy, timing, and smoothness of play is recorded so you can always benchmark yourself.

Of course, the best proof is that which you can hear, as songs which used to daunt you now effortlessly flow from your piano.

Social Engagement

As humans, we’re social creatures. A victory royale is all the more sweet when we share that chicken dinner with our friends. Then we’ll top it off by streaming it to our fans.

Similarly, we’ve designed The Arcade system so you can challenge your friends to best your scores on the Leaderboard.

Talented at composing alternative versions of popular songs? Upload them to the Library and invite others to bring your songs to life!

We’ve also planned for some extra features (see our Stretch Goals) that we’re excited to develop and implement.

1) Pick a song

2) Connect your phone to the Arcade visualizer

3) Play it. Learn it.

In the spirit of Kickstarter, we want to build the Arcade with you! As we are focused on making sure The Arcade can be built and delivered, the current basic version is rather bare-bones. Additional funding from Stretch Goals will allow us to add additional features that improve playability, aesthetics, and fun.

The current visuals are simplistic in nature. Practice Mode has a Green Light when the right key is hit and a Red Light with the incorrect key.

At this funding level, we plan to make the notes splash down with particle effects and multiple colors. We will also build in a keyboard-facing RGB LED strip that reacts to your playing. Colored hues will indicate how well you’ve played each note so you can have a better gauge of your performance in real time.

Music is a universal language, fostering peace and understanding amongst all whose hearts are touched by melody.

This doesn’t mean we can’t be competitive about it.

Challenge Mode adds a Leaderboard to the ForteRight ecosystem and weekly challenges. Who can sustain the perfect arpeggio the longest? The fastest playthrough of a tough Chopin piece?

Duelist Mode pits you against other players or friends in a one-off playthrough of a randomly selected song. Will you be able to pull off completely new songs using nothing but visual cues? Perform well, and you’ll move up in the Matchmaking Rankings and play harder songs against tougher opponents!

Music is always better when shared with friends (and strangers).

This stretch goal will have the mobile app capable of combining your phone’s camera feed together with the note visualizations and your live score.

Livestream your performance of impossibly difficult pieces and dazzle the internet at large! Become an internet celebrity and sell Piano Person Bath Water for $30 a pop. The possibilities are endless!

Do your thing, internet! We’ll monitor the comment section and note which features are the most requested. Depending on feasibility, we will then build it in at the US$500,000 level!

(Just don’t ask us to rename the device to Music McLightyface or Yeet Piano)

We designed the Arcade to be easily stored. A simple hinged design allows the visualizer to be folded and put away when not in use.

The onboard compute unit, power and USB plugs are contained in the first panel. The display can be flipped via software settings so the plugs can go either on the left or right of your setup.

Each Package comes with:

Basic specifications:

  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB
  • Peak power rating: 100W
  • Voltage: 110-240V
  • Dimensions (WxHxD): 1280mm x 320mm x 30mm

We are a small team of music and tech enthusiasts spread between Singapore and the United States. Our passion for music and video games collided with our product design knowledge to bring you the Arcade. We hope you can join us on our journey to musical mastery through fun.

Play it. Learn it.

Risks and challenges

Our hardware engineering is in place and almost ready to manufacture. Most of our risk is on the software side of things. Taking a cue from Tesla's processes, we developed the hardware electronics to be fairly flexible and able to accommodate over-the-air updates. This way, we can minimize the risk of delivery delays by sending out the Arcade units and relying on software updates to improve each unit's performance.
