About

The Game

#refugee card game is a 2-4 player, turn-based strategy card game in which players assume the roles of countries attempting to address an acute global influx of refugees. Players take turns discovering certain facts and pieces of information about each refugee. Leveraging this knowledge, players then make choices on how best to manage the influx of refugees and how to balance the security of their borders. #refugee card game encourages collaboration in games with more than 2 players.

Will you try to allow as many refugees as possible into your country or will you try to bury your opponents by redirecting “undesirable” refugees away from your borders?

Average playing time: 2 players: 15-30 minutes; 4 players: 40-60 minutes.

The Process

We started this project in November of 2016. The initial concept of this game was a spoof of a tweet by Donald Trump Jr. about having a bowl of Skittles where three of them were poison and you were asked if you would still take one. He was called out for equateing human life to a bowl of candy. #SMH. Over the next few months the notion of how refugees were vetted and the processes behind how countries decide how many and which ones to grant asylum to were explored. This led to the launch of our first Kickstarter in the summer of 2017. We were met with an overwhelming negative response because of the political climate at the time. Which brings us to Version 2.0 and our current Kickstarter campaign. Having retooled the game by replacing the stereotyping with intrinsic facts about refugees around the world, we believe we have achieved the proper balance of awareness and gameplay. No matter your country of origin or which side of the refugee debate you are on, #refugee card game introduces a fun means in opening discussion amongst your fellow gamers. Beyond promoting social discourse, #refugee card game can also inspire a little self-reflection.

Game Play Reviews/Examples

Here is a pretty good intro to the whole vetting system that is a core part of the game:

There are more videos on our website that show the general mechanics of the game.  Please note, these videos were made with earlier versions, but they still provide you a really good idea of how things work.

What's in the Box?

The game contains 160 cards: 40 refugee cards, 40 action cards and 80 vetting cards.  A reference guide, scoring pad and a custom die will also be included in each box. You can always download and print more scoring sheets from our website.

Cost Breakdown

Illustrative Budget Items
Illustrative Budget Items

The only thing we are trying to cover with this Kickstarter campaign is the initial print fee and associated Kickstarter fees.  In order to do this, we need roughly 250 people to back the project. There are more expenses than the ones listed above, but it's ok, we got all that covered. Let's just say that we learned a lot about our available printing options since our first Kickstarter.

Stretch Goals

$10,000 - If we make it here, we will reward each backer with a copy of the original set of 40 Refugee Cards (the set with the black backs). These cards have alternative flavor text on them that was categorized as "equal opportunity stereotyping" and was removed in response to feedback. This is useful because it can be used to further emphasize what is wrong with the perceptions many people have when it comes to refugees and their origins.

Selling out of beta copies of #refugee at Baltimore Comicon

$15,000 - This is an interesting level because it more than pays for a much larger, expanded print run.  If we make it here we can really think about distribution to regions and eat more of the shipping costs for international backers.  So, this isn't set in stone but wanted to put it out there as a milestone that truly unlocks options.

We will add more stretch goals later depending on how the campaign goes. These would most likely be in the form of expansions packs for Africa, Europe and/or Australia.

Manufacturing

The current game manufacturer we are using has given the following estimation for the production of the final game.

  • 3 weeks for digital samples and color proofs
  • 4-8 weeks for production
  • 4-7 weeks for shipping (via sea freight)
  • 1 week for domestic delivery

This is a total range of 12-19 weeks (or 4-5 months). This is reflected in the estimated delivery dates on the backer levels based upon the Kickstarter ending in the first week of March 2018.  This means July/August 2018.

Shipping

A quick word about shipping. All of the tiers have a partial cost of the actual shipping cost associated with them. There are differences for United States and outside the United States (beyond how we each treat refugees). In general, the package is going to be about 2 pounds. For First Class International Packages, to most places outside the United States, this is $23.50.  Inside the United States, using Regional Flat Rate boxes it would either be $7.10 to $15.33 depending upon how far the package has to go. We have decided to average and include United States shipping into the cost of each tier at $10.  This means that non-United States shipping will appear as $13.50.

In order to save international backers money, we created a separate INTERNATIONAL RELIEF tier that is 2 copies of the game and includes the shipping costs.  We are absorbing much of the shipping costs using the margins from the second copy of the game. This tier is perfect for those that have a local friend that want a copy of the game as well.

Social Media

Follow us, and we thank you in advance. The bottom line here is easy. If you want to see this game produced, please back it and encourage 1 or 2 of your friends to back it with you!

Risks and challenges

No real risks here. So long as the goal is reached we will have enough funds to do our initial print run. All of the other expenses have actually been paid for. We just need your help to get this project off the ground.
