File Stapler is a small handy desktop tool that helps you organize your digital life. It staples together files that you need to always open at the same time, so that when you open one, the others also open automatically. This saves you from making multiple copies of the same files in different locations or renaming files to remember which is which. Simple as that.
I am seeking funding to create a basic free open source piece of software that appears as a right click menu, with options to 'staple' and 'unstaple' files.
I came across this need while trying to cross reference purchase orders with sales invoices and found myself repetitively hunting for files which were jumbled up in one folder under very different file names which couldn't be changed or archived in an easy way. Rather than creating an entirely new folder just for a couple of files, or making copies of files (not great), or renaming the files (very very not great especially if there are many files to process) I felt it would be simpler to have a basic tool that associates files, and I came up with File Stapler as a simple solution.
I know that there are various other ways that this can be achieved! Specifically with tags, macros and meta-data etc. but the options available don't have the speed, lightness and accessibility that I think make sense for a universal desktop tool. Hence this basic right click menu makes sense to me. It needs to be as simple and instant as possible to be useful.
I then considered how this might be useful in many other scenarios, such as musicians opening sheet music with lyrics that they are learning, architects trying to sort through hundreds of photographs of a property with specific PDF plans, graphic designers opening a book design, a collection of images and a font editor, solicitors working with multiple different sensitive documents that are associated but should not be copied or changed, and so on.
If there is enough interest in the project I would like to then add further features and develop a pro version with options such as ‘make folder from stapled files’, ‘email stapled files’, 'open folders of stapled files', 'show list of stapled files' and so on. I would like to work openly with my backers to see what features they might like added to it, and what sort of applications it might be used for. I have some ideas… but I’m really most interested to see if it will catch other people’s imaginations and then see what they might propose would be most useful to add to it. I am open to ideas.
My hope is that File Stapler stays small, light and handy like a real stapler, and so only the most useful features should be added to it.
File Stapler will work on both PC and Mac.
Risks and challenges
File Stapler is a very small piece of software, but it's important that it works across as many platforms as possible, which will be the greatest challenge.
I am working alongside my good friend Amit Kumar who, joking aside, is a computer genius who operates with a number of programming languages and platforms. He also has a team of associates in India with whom we can work through the various software issues as they arise.
Further to this I have also made initial investigations into having the software produced with no apparent issues put forwards to me as yet.
A positive part of this campaign is that there is no postage of physical rewards involved which, as a furniture maker is bliss! :)
edit: ah.... okay.... so I'm doing some t-shirts too as I like the stapler logo....Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
