Hello Kickstarter, we are Form&Seek!

Welcome to our very first Kickstarter!

With this campaign we are launching our first collection and our aim is to enable people to purchase original and innovative crafted goods from a curated collection founded and run by designers.

Our collection focuses on newly developed processes, contemporary craft techniques and globally-local production. Interesting innovative materials and processes play a key role in the pieces by Form & Seek. Each item tells a story through the way it has been made or the impact it has on our daily lives.

With the creation of a new disruptive business model made for a generation of designers that have mastered their own creation and production, Form&Seek unites the individuals by tailoring a global network of retailers and customers and centralising communication, marketing and distribution.

By cutting out the outdated royalty based manufacturers’ role the designer can focus on experimentation and creation, without having to force their work into a mass-producable mould and without having to worry about selling or distributing their work.

If you support our campaign, your help will go directly towards:

  • Investing in the start up cost of the product you choose.
  • Creating packaging and printed material to make a professional retail-ready product.
  • The purchase of materials and equipment.
  • Income for all the designers and local makers involved.

We have been working on producing prototypes and have developed new ways to perfect each individual piece for the collection. Each product has been developed to its final stage and is ready for production.

We now need your help to bring this first collection to life!

We have been working alongside our designers for the last few years to grow the collection from initial ideas to matured objects. We are thrilled that this beautiful collection is now at  a stage where it can be shared with the world.

We and every Form&Seeker involved in the new collection have dedicated years to develop our own materials and processes to each perfect our craft.

Our dream is to use the power of the collective to enable us all as independent designers and makers to scale up our production and allow consumers, retailers and contract buyers to purchase unique hand crafted, design products directly from the collective.

Ripple Espresso Cups by Bilge Nur Saltik for Form&Seek
Ripple Espresso Cups by Bilge Nur Saltik for Form&Seek

"Stackable Ripple Espresso Cups inspired by ancient columns"

The Ripple Espresso Cups are stackable cups designed uniquely for the first Form & Seek Collection by Bilge Nur Saltik. Bilge Nur comes from Turkey and was inspired by the architecture of her surroundings. Using a contemporary technique such as 3D printing she revisited the geometry and texture of the iconic columns on a smaller scale. Through these first prototypes Bilge Nur Saltik and Form&Seek hope to bring these beautiful new pieces to life with your support.

Current status: Bilge Nur has 3D printed the master models from her 3D drawings. She made a provisional plaster mould herself in her studio in Istanbul and cast the first prototypes of Ripple Espresso Cups only a few months ago.

What will your support contribute to?

We want to manufacture this product with a large, professional ceramic manufacturer in Istanbul. This will allow us to work with high temperature ceramic which makes more durable pieces. To be able to do this we need to reach a minimum quantity of 250 cups of each design. Your support will help us work with a large professional workshop. We will make 10 technical moulds of each design and cast the 500 ceramic Ripple cups in 2 different patterns.

"A collection of colour experiments turned into useful cotton tea towels and napkins. Each fold reveals a new colour and composition"

Hues Tea Towels by Rive Roshan for Form&Seek.
Hues Tea Towels by Rive Roshan for Form&Seek.

These kitchen cloths can be used as tea towels, napkins, place mats, wrapping cloths or table runners. The multi-coloured graphics allow you to make different colour combinations depending on your personal style and add a dash of colour to your kitchen.

Each set includes two tea towels.

Current status:

Golnar and Ruben of design studio Rive Roshan have prototyped 2 of each colour variation to test the colour quality of the print and the quality of the fabric. So far they have cut and sewn the seams of the first batch by hand in their studio in Amsterdam.

What will your support contribute to?

To be able to bring this product to life we need to print a minimum quantity of 100 pieces, to minimise the start up cost of the print and finishing. With your support we will print this collection with a professional fabric manufacturer in The Netherlands and work with them to have professionally sewn pieces which will look beautiful in every kitchen.

"The Density Ripple Prints are signed Limited Edition screen prints made with overlays of colour."

The pieces explore graphic interference patterns hand printed on high-quality white card. The pieces are a representation of the collaborative work between Studio Anne Ligtenberg and Atelier Mats. The striking A2 screen prints come in 6 colours in editions of 24 prints per colourway.

Current status:

Atelier Mats and Studio Anne Ligtenberg screen print these posters in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. So far they are renting a screen printing studio whenever they need to in order to be able to print these early editions.

What will your support contribute to?

To be able to efficiently produce these screen prints Anne and Mats can grow their collection of beautiful art prints and design research. The screen printing process is labour intensive and time consuming. With larger order quantities they can print larger quantities at lower price points and they will be able to produce more colour ways and designs for us all to enjoy.

"Touch Bowls are ceramic bowls in various sizes made with imprints of the maker’s body."

Touch Bowls by Marija Puipaite for Form&Seek.
Touch Bowls by Marija Puipaite for Form&Seek.

Touch Bowls, a continuous research through sculptural objects investigate the various kinds of shapes and suggestive functions human bodies can provide. It's about forms following the body and our intimate connection with a material world. Each piece is unique and made by the designer.

Current status:

Marija has worked with a ceramicist to throw the bowls in Lithuania where she is based. She uses her own knee and elbow to shape the bowls. She has currently produced 4 of each bowl as prototypes to test the glazing and clay durability and ensure the product is useable.

What will your support contribute to?

The Touch bowls are in the prototyping phase, to be able to produce the product efficiently we will need to make molds to cast these bowls. With your support we will work with a larger professional workshop in Lithuania to produce these products, we will make 6 technical plaster moulds of two sizes and cast the 200 ceramic Touch Bowls in 2 different shapes as the first batch of the production. To cast ceramics the minimum quantities are high and we are looking for as many orders as possible to be able to make this a reality!

"One continuous zipper runs along all four sides, making the front and back panels interchangeable."

The zipper cushions add a new level of customisation to your interior style. A zipper runs all along the cushion allowing you to interchange the back and front panels according to your taste.

The cushions are made of the highest grade Steelcut Trio interior fabric from Kvadrat and are hand sewn in Amsterdam.

For the Kickstarter launch we have created two colour ways, with in total four different panels. This already gives you 16 options of combinations. In the future we will introduce many more colours and colour combinations to the collection.

Current status:

Rive Roshan has developed the cushions in their studio, searching the right fabric, developing the design and colour combinations and sourcing the perfect size zipper to match the standard cushion size of 60x60cm. They have created the first two prototypes that are fully functional.

What will your support contribute to?

To bring the cushions to life we need to work with a production atelier in Amsterdam and we need to order larger quantities of fabric from Kvadrat. To make production feasible we will need to have a large batch produced at once, to spread start up cost, pattern cutting and material bulk order over several items.

"A sculptural mirror object made from crystallised minerals a technique that the designer has mastered over the years"

Crystallised Mirror by Isaac Monte for Form&Seek.
Crystallised Mirror by Isaac Monte for Form&Seek.

The ‘Crystallised Mirror’ is the result of research into stalagmites, one of the greatest wonders of nature. The growing process of the object can be seen as a metaphor for time. Each object is unique in shape, colour and texture, due to the organic development of the object. This process can take up to several days to obtain the perfect shape, interesting colour combinations and dimensions of crystals. Each piece is unique and made by the Isaac Monté, for this reason there may be slight variations of size or details in each piece.

Current status:

Isaac Monté has been making crystallised objects in his studio in Rotterdam for a number of years. For Form&Seek he is developing a special, unique mirror. Each piece is made in a big metal vat filled with saturated mineral liquids. Overnight the crystals are grown over their mould.

What will your support contribute to?

Isaac has created this design uniquely for this first Form&Seek collection. He is building his studio around the production of his products within the studio, using his unique crystallisation method. By supporting Isaac's first product for the Form&Seek collection you help him grow a sustainable creative practice and production facility.

"A vase which turns a single flower into a bouquet".

This hand-crafted glass vase is produced by carving a fine pattern of polished cuts in a hand-blow glass vessel. The intricate pattern in the glass creates a kaleidoscopic effect that multiplies a flower into an entire bouquet, with the image changing depending on the viewer's angle.

OP-Vase brings magic into spaces with its playful relation to light. OP-Vase designed by Bilge Nur Saltik is hand blown and cold carved by specialised craftsmen in Istanbul. The original versions were made in the colours Green and Blue. For the Form&Seek collection Bilge Nur has created an exclusive special colour edition - PINK.

Current status:

Nur has been working on optical illusions for the last four years. She designed the OP-vase two years ago and exhibited it for the first time in Form&Seek's exhibition in Milan 2015. For Form&Seek she has created a special edition in a beautiful shade of pink exclusively for the collection.

What will your support contribute to?

For the new pink colour of OP-vase we will need to invest in a new batch of blown glasses to carve and shape the OP-vase. To blow coloured glass we will need to melt a specific colour in the glass kiln and prepare a pot of hot glass in the specific colour ready to be blown. This pot of glass requires a minimum of 150 pieces to be blown in order to not waste material. With your help we will be able to buy the necessary coloured glass for the pot and produce the required 150 pieces for the first batch of OP-vases in this special new colour.

"As a result of her hands-on experimental design approach, Opticals Rugs explore the visual potential of the very basic weaving technique of creating vertical lines."

Opticals by Begum Cana Ozgur for Form&Seek.
Opticals by Begum Cana Ozgur for Form&Seek.

The ancient tradition of weaving in Turkey comes to the edge of being forgotten. The number of skilled weavers decreases every other day, and the knowledge that is transformed among the generations is getting lost. We believe that design has a strong power on creating cultural values and a social transformation. With your help we can employ a bigger group of kilim makers in Anatolia and train them to contribute the sustainability of this culture.

Inspired by op-art, Begum Cana Ozgur’s interpretation of this weaving technique is to create patterns that engage the user with movement and depth. The viewer's perception activates the piece in each encounter, keeping the dialogue alive. Beyond its functional purpose as a floor covering, it becomes an art object in the living environment.

Current status:

Cana has been working on weaving her own samples and working with the Anatolian rug makers for this piece over the last few years. She has designed a specific pattern for Form&Seek and has produced the first 2 samples of the Opticals Rug especially for the collection.

What will your support contribute to?

Kilim making requires experience and craftsmanship. Cana worked with local women weavers to create the first two prototypes of the Opticals Rugs. For a feasible production plan we need to organise a bigger group of kilim makers in Anatolia to make the kilims. As the patterns are complicated it takes the maker a number of trials in order to master the design. With your help we can gather a larger group of kilim makers in Anatolia and train them to weave graphically perfect, unique and contemporary optical rugs.

Each piece from the collection is designed by a member of the collective using their creative skills and talents. The pieces are newly designed and exclusive editions for the Form&Seek collection. They all tell a story through the way they have been made or the impact they create on our daily lives.

Innovative materials and processes.

Interesting, innovative materials and processes play a key role in the pieces by Form&Seek. The pieces in the collection use a range of innovative materials and technologies from 3D printed ceramics to products that use the natural formation of crystals as a base material.

Contemporary design objects with a narrative.

Our first collection expands on a wide range of crafted products from conventional products prototyped with new technologies to objects that play with natural formations and surprising use of material. Each thought provoking, poetic design object has a strong character and personality with the personal mark of the maker visible in the final outcome.

We started with a small group of designers that curated exhibitions together but we were depending on others to retail our products and promote them. This gave us little control and independence and a relatively small outreach.

Each designer had to undertake all aspects of the business including the creation of ideas, designing, making, manufacturing, packaging, distributing, finding retailers, promoting and selling. We realised that as a collective it would be much more beneficial to create a centralised platform for all our designers so that we could all share these resources from one place. This new model will be beneficial to all independent designers.

With your help we want to take control and re-structure our businesses. We have designed a collection for ourselves and we want to have the power to produce them independently in larger batches.

We have dedicated years to develop our own materials and processes to perfect our craft. Our dream is to use the power of the collective to enable us as independent designers and makers to scale up our production and allow consumers, retailers and contract buyers to buy unique hand crafted design products directly from the collective.

Your support will help us produce our first collection in series and start a movement which creates and supports a generation of independent designers with their own practices and control over their production.

Risks and challenges

A lot of work and energy has been put into bringing to life this idea and new model for designers. It would probably be easier if all the products were manufactured in an industrial setting with high quantities in one location. But Form&Seek is on Kickstarter to shift this construction. We celebrate designer / makers globally and bring you locally hand crafted products with unique processes which cannot be made in any other way since every item’s production technique has been uniquely innovated and developed.
Despite the logistic difficulties and language barriers we have been working really hard to bring Form&Seek products to their final production phase. We have made endless prototypes and tests to make sure this is completely feasible, and to educate everyone involved in the process, on how to make the best product possible for you.
Form&Seek has existed as a collective for over 4 years. Over these years we have met many talented creatives. The biggest challenge now is going from a collective of exhibiting designers to a brand which supports them and makes their work directly available to consumers.
We have already worked with all of the artisan communities and workshops, and are confident we will be able to deliver all the products at a high quality on time. If for any reason we are delayed in our production schedule, you will be the first to know, whether post-Kickstarter or in the future.
From the moment we start producing the pieces we will work towards refining the products even further to create the best versions possible. Our first priorities are our backers and future customers.
We commit to providing the most efficient and detailed communication possible. We are looking forward to bringing you a successful products! Thank you!
