"Forgetting Haiti Project" is a show of Haitian portraits and the artistic process about the beauty of heartbreak. Please donate!
I am creating a large show of 20-24 portraits of the Haitian People for a gallery show in the Seattle area called "Forgetting Haiti". The portraits are a way to address the disconnect I have felt since I returned from Haiti in May 2010. There is a curiosity to investigate the response to heartbreak and the process of forgetting as distinguished from healing.

Some of the images from the show will be printed as large posters, 6-8’, with the words “Forgetting Haiti” at the bottom and a web address. At this site there will be a blog featuring my poems, meditations, sketches and photos of the artistic process of painting and opening to what has been (universally) pushed away when I create a world of duality. Twenty of these posters will hang in outdoor locations such as bus stops and under bridges in Seattle area. The degeneration of these posters will be documented in time lapse as they weather and/or are covered up, representational of mind’s resistance to pain.
I have been invited to show this body of work at the Blue Heron Fine Art Center on Vashon Island in July, 2011. Some of the first paintings I finish will be used to print large, bio-degradable posters, (with soy based ink). These will be hung in staggered intervals in various areas of Seattle, on Capital Hill, First Hill, Downtown, Freemont, Ballard, West Seattle, and Vashon Island (pending permission). Daily photos will be taken of the posters as the weather diminishes them and then I will compose a short film showing them in time lapse. The film will alo include poetry and images from the show and will be posted on the blog, YouTube and will be shown at the gallery for the duration of the show. There will be an opening of the show of paintings at Blue Heron Gallery that is free to the public in July.
I will use some of the funding to rent a simple studio space for the next 5 months so that I can work on more than one piece at a time. One of the larger costs will be the printing and the hanging of the 20 eco-conscious posters that can be recycled or will biodegrade. Hiring photographers that can document the deterioration of the posters, supplies for painting of the show, the hanging of the show with frames, transportation costs, including ferry rides, and food and invitations for the show are all included in the funding requests. I will also hire an assistant to help me document the show and assist in the editing of the final video. I am trying to keep my cost low and am forgoing any personal income in hopes of making my funding total!
I am also very conscious of environmental impacts of this show and will make every attempt to use non-toxic, recyclable, bio-degradable, organic supplies.
