Hi, I’m Robb Mommaerts and I am an illustrator and designer working here in good ole’ sunny Wisconsin. Most of my work revolves around creating art for games, children’s books, collectables and comics. In my free time I like to draw fantasy characters, monsters and other critters with a brush and bottle of ink.
I have always wanted to put together a book of my drawings to share with everyone. I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve been asked about this by friends and other folks who follow my work. Well... that time is here! Or rather, with your help, it will be!
I’m thrilled to be working with Forge Publishing on my new book, Ink Tank. Throughout my entire life, my passion has always been drawing. Like most artistic kids, I was always doodling in my notebooks, getting yelled at by teachers for not paying attention and trying to make my friends laugh with gross drawings. After working as an artist and graphic designer for many years, I sort of hit a brick wall creatively.
In 2013, I decided to participate in the InkTober Art challenge. Since I’m an old fashioned guy, my weapons of choice were a brush and lots and lots of India ink. Drawing with ink every day for the month of October rekindled my interest in working traditionally with the medium, and it’s been forefront in my work ever since.
Ink Tank will collect a lot of my black and white ink drawings from the past few years. The book will feature a lot of the work I did for InkTober as well as some freelance illustrations and my personal projects. Why just black and white? I do illustrate in color but I just love the simplicity of line art. I also like getting away from my computer! Having only a white piece of paper, a pencil, a brush and a bottle of ink brings me back to simpler times. In my illustrations, I try to let the line work do as much of the heavy lifting as possible. You can achieve so much by varying line width or adding texture and depth with an assortment of marks. I’ve always been fascinated by that. I also think an artist can learn a lot about themselves and their work by setting limits.
I have a lot of drawings picked out for Ink Tank already, and I plan on drawing some more pieces specifically for the book. By supporting Ink Tank on Kickstarter, you are helping to cover the costs of designing and editing, as well as printing and other production costs. There are a range of backer rewards, including prints, an MP3 book commentary, a coloring book and a limited number of commission slots to get your own original inked illustration!
Thank you so much for taking the time to check out the Kickstarter for Ink Tank. If you decide to back the book, I think you will really enjoy what Forge Publishing and I put together. If you want to help the campaign even more, be sure to share the page with your friends on social media.
Ink Tank will be approximately 130 pages, collecting of some of Robb’s best black and white illustration work. We are pulling from his InkTober series, his freelance and commission work, and, of course, a lot of his personal work. Robb is currently developing a fantasy world and we’re excited to include some of those illustrations as well.
Robb tends to work pretty large and we want try to capture as much of the amazing detail of his art as we can. Ink Tank will be a large format book, about 9 x 12 inches, bound on the long side, similar to a graphic novel. There will be both a softcover and a hardcover print run of the book for those of you who want something a bit more meaty. Both books will have a matte UV coating and matte laminate on the covers. The hardcover book will also have a full colour dust jacket that will get the same matte UV coating and matte laminate finish.
By supporting Ink Tank on Kickstarter, you are more than just placing a pre-order for a copy of the book. You are helping cover production costs like design and layout, editing and printing. Robb has a fantastic collection of work that needs to be curated and prepared for print. The book itself needs to be designed and edited. Ink Tank will reflect the quality and the incredible detail that Robb puts into his work, so we want go over everything with a fine toothed comb -er- I mean brush.
Forge Publishing is a Canadian publisher. The reward levels and shipping costs for the Ink Tank Kickstarter are priced in Canadian dollars. If you are backing the project from the United States, you will see the approximate conversion rate to US dollars before you complete your pledge. If you are backing Ink Tank from another country, you may have to do a little math but the exchange rate may be in your favour!
We will be using BackerKit to handle backer surveys and manage rewards. If you would like extra rewards you can also use BackerKit to add items on to your reward package.
*Due to shipping costs, we are only able to offer a print copy of the book as an add-on to backers in the United States.
What is an add-on and how do they work?
An add-on is an additional Kickstarter item that you can request to be included with your reward package for an additional cost. You get to choose! Most of the add-ons we have prepared are physical rewards like prints or a second copy of the book. There are some restrictions but the good news is, add-ons will not affect your shipping.
To include an add-on in your pledge:
- Add up the total of the items that you wish to add to your reward package.
- Click "Manage Your Pledge" in the upper right of the Kickstarter page.
- Add the total cost of your add-ons to your pledge amount. You do not need to change the reward level that you have selected. You just have to adjust the amount you pledge.
- That's it. You're done!
When you receive your BackerKit survey asking you how you spent your “add-on dollars” you will be able to choose the appropriate items from a list.
In order to add prints to your reward package, you need to be backing at the $40 Destroy All Humans level or above. Prints will ship anywhere in the world. Adding prints will not affect your shipping.
In order to add an additional print copy of the book to your reward package, you need to be backing at the $60 Beast Level and have a shipping address in the United States. Adding a book, prints or colouring book to your package will not affect your shipping.
Thank you! Everyone who backs Ink Tank will have their name printed on a special thank-you page in the book. Plus, you will all get a video of Robb inking a character illustration and talking about his techniques and creative process.
You will receive a link to download a digital copy of Ink Tank so you can enjoy it wherever you are. The digital book will be distributed through BackerKit and released at the same time as the printed book in 2018.
You get a digital copy of Ink Tank and two 9 x 12 inch Ink Tank prints. There are six prints to choose from. You can make your final selection through BackerKit once the Kickstarter campaign is complete.
You will receive a softcover copy of Ink Tank. The book will showcase Robb’s incredible black and white illustrations in beautiful detail as well as offer some insight from Robb about his work. The 130-plus page softcover book will have the same inside page size and content as the hardcover book. If you live overseas, the softcover also costs a bit less to ship than the hardcover. The estimated shipping date for Ink Tank is in the spring of 2018.
Thanks for being among the first to support Ink Tank! You get both a hardcover copy and digital copy of Ink Tank in this special limited reward for the first 50 backers at this level.
You will receive a monstrous hardcover copy of Ink Tank. The hardcover book will have all of the same great art as the sofcover in a sturdy case binding and a full colour dust jacket with a matte UV coating and matte laminate.
Double trouble! Think less creepy and more convenient. Your copy of Ink Tank can be in two places at once. You will receive both a hardcover copy and a digital copy of the book.

The colouring book will be approximately 8.5 x 11 inches, which is nearly the same size as some of Robb’s original pieces. Your prints and colouring book will ship with your physical book in 2018.
This reward package includes everything from the Head Hunter reward level with one huge addition—a 9 x 12 inch, hand drawn, original illustration from Robb. Risks and challenges
One of the largest challenges in taking on a project of this scale is fulfilling the backer rewards in a timely fashion. Designing Ink Tank will begin immediately after we reach our goal. We plan to keep backers up to speed on the project as it develops by sharing art and page previews as well as development milestones as we hit them.
The second challenge of fulfilling this project will be getting your book and your rewards to you. We are working with Dave Michael of SalesGeek Consulting, an experienced fulfillment shop, and BackerKit fulfillment software in an effort to keep the fulfillment process as smooth as possible. To date, Dave has completed the fulfillment on ten successful Kickstarter campaigns, including Piper Thibodeau's Daily Paintings Kickstarter. We are looking forward to working with Dave again on Ink Tank. BackerKit has helped over 1,800 project creators connect with their backers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
