About

3 brothers. 2 years. 1 massive game.

Brace for Impact: The Crashlands Story is a feature documentary film focusing on Butterscotch Shenanigans, a studio consisting of three of the most experienced game developers in St. Louis, Missouri, the Coster brothers, who’ve spent the last two years working on their most ambitious mobile and PC game yet, Crashlands, both as the next title for the studio, and as the Costers’ response to their brother, Sam’s, battle with Stage 4B Lymphoma.

Brace for Impact is being produced by Forever an Astronaut, a St. Louis-based video development and boutique production house, and we’ve been following the story since September 2015. The project began as a simple look into the game developer scene in Saint Louis, that culminated in us meeting and interviewing the Coster bros, and learning about the journey they were enduring as they developed their biggest game to date.

We want to show you what it’s like from the inside of a small studio ambitiously trying to release a monolith of a game, while juggling the pressures and hiccups that face them in their everyday lives. Brace for Impact is for the aspiring game developer that wants to learn more about creating a game, it’s for the game enthusiast who loves to see how their favorite things are made, and it’s for people who love a good story.

 SPECIAL THANKS TO

Forever an Astronaut has made Brace for Impact a huge priority for 2016. Both of the co-owners of the company are personally directing and producing the film, and we’re bringing on our best talent to help us make the film the best that it can be. We’ve worked on run-and-gun style mini-docs for years, produced Mid-America Emmy nominated television, and award-winning short films, but this is our most ambitious project yet!

Meet the talented crew bringing this project to life:

James Reichmuth (Executive Producer) – Director / Producer for Forever an Astronaut and one of its founding members, James Reichmuth is an award-winning theatre director and filmmaker who has been in the St. Louis area all his life and is excited to be working with so many talented developers from the region.

Alessio Summerfield (Director/Executive Producer) – Director / Producer for Forever an Astronaut and one of its founding members, Alessio Summerfield is a Mid-America Emmy nominated producer, award- winning independent filmmaker, and has had his eye set on making a great film out of the St. Louis game development community for a few years now.

Dylan Kress (Producer) – Dylan Kress is an independent director / producer who has been working in documentary film for a few years and has recently made his return to St. Louis after spending a few years living and working in Los Angeles for folks like Vice. Like the rest of the team, Dylan is all about telling this amazing story in the best possible way.

Bret Hoy (Editor) – Bret Hoy is an Award Winning Cinematographer and Editor based out of St. Louis, Missouri with experience in Non-Fiction and Fiction stories of all mediums. Editing projects from the DIY Music documentary Dither: The D.I.Y. Sound to his anti-authoritarian Mini-Doc, "One Note" each one of his documentary projects take important characters and stories and relates them to relevant issues in our society. Telling stories that have real world impact and relevance is a very important part of every project he takes on.

Patrick Crecelius & Zach Fendelman a.k.a. Fat Bard (Original Score) – Fat Bard consists of Patrick and Zach, two professional musicians and sound designers working out of St. Louis on game and film music. The duo recently composed all of the original music for Butterscotch Shenanigans’ own Crashlands.

Scott Waters (Post Audio Technician) – Scott is an extremely talented and experienced audio tech and sound designer from Georgia who spent several years working within the industry in Atlanta, GA’s commercial film world. He may not be geographically close to the story like the rest of the team, but he’s still determined to make this the best film it can be.

Sarah Wahoff (Original Score) – Musician for several local game developers in St. Louis, Sarah is also contributing her talents and her work to this film. The production team is extremely excited to be able to utilize local St. Louis music talent in the project.

Eric Hibbeler (Poster / Box Artist) – Eric currently resides in Kansas City, MO but he worked and lived in St. Louis for most of his life and has been the poster artist for all of the releases from Butterscotch Shenanigans since 2012.

Forever an Astronaut. Get it?
Forever an Astronaut. Get it?

Reaching our goals means that your life gets a lot more exciting, and ours gets a lot more hectic. We'll be able to finish up the remaining shoot dates, crank out the post-production on this bad boy, and have the capital to submit this film to festivals all over the world. WE WANT YOU TO SEE IT!

You can stay totally up to date on what's happening with the film by checking our website, braceforimpactmovie.com and signing up for our newsletter! You can also check out out on Facebook (Brace for Impact: The Crashlands Story) and Twitter (@crashlandsfilm)! Get in touch, we'd love to hear from you!

One of the main reasons we chose Kickstarter was for it's ability to keep creators reasonable and responsible. If you don't reach your goal, you don't see any of the money donated, everyone gets a refund. This means that you have to plan accordingly, and not overstep your potential audience. It's a platform that lets people choose what content they want to see, and we're all about that.

Check out this nifty pie-chart and read the section below for more info!

Risks and challenges

Forever an Astronaut has wrapped on principal photography and primary production for Brace for Impact and we have the core of our story captured. However, we still have some scenes that we’d like to capture and a whole lot of post-production that needs to go into the final product, and we can’t do that without your help.

From a shooting stand-point, we have a trip to Iowa (where the Costers hometown is) to embark on, and a trip to Texas (where Adam Coster currently resides) that we need to capture, on top of some odd supplemental pick-up shoots around St. Louis. Besides that, it’s all about the editing.

We have the first scene of the film edited, some promotional materials, and a skeleton of the final film laid out, however there are a large number of hours that still need to go into post-production before we can finalize the film.

Brace for Impact is currently being produced as a passion project (a.k.a. out of pocket) for the love of the story and the developers. We also have a huge love for our audience, and we want to make this endeavor the best it can be for all of you. We want to give you the best quality and a tighter focus on telling the story the way that it’s meant to be told. More content. More quality. More Shenanigans.
