Formed in 2017 out of the creative partnership of Kate Griffin and Ford Collier, Mishra are a global folk collective who bring influences from Indian classical, Americana and jazz to their roots in UK folk. For their debut album, The Loft Tapes, Joss Mann-Hazell and John Ball join Kate and Ford for seven quartet tracks and four trio tracks, all of which are recorded live-in-the-room to analogue tape, in the loft of a farmhouse in Gloucestershire. The process of capturing whole performances of the band playing together, and the warmth and incredibly realistic sound of tape, make each track a snapshot of a particular time and place; a musical moment suspended in time.
This has been a big year for the band. Since 2018 new members have formed a collective, we have come up with our band name, and we have pulled together so many aspects of our sound and brand. The Loft Tapes is the proof of this and we want to show it to as many people as possible; it's a natural sounding, faithful recording that stretched us as musicians and we are proud of it!
Also in 2018, we were awarded the Christian Raphael prize at Cambridge Folk Festival, which as well as earning us a slot at Cambridge Festival 2019 includes financial support for our creative projects. This has meant that we have made a lot of headway in getting The Loft Tapes finished; it's already mixed, mastered, and ready to print. But we have set up this kickstarter because there are still some expensive hurdles to releasing this album the way we believe it deserves. As well as printing a quality CD, we want to make a big splash with an album release alongside our planned tour (details TBA) at the end of this year, so we are paying for professional publicity to get reviews in magazines and spread the word about our live shows.
By pre-ordering, you will get the album before its official release at the end of the year and help us with the funds to release it properly. There are other exciting ways to fund us too, see the previews below...
Check out our range of goat merchandise, designed by our very own Kate, inspired by the almost daily goat breaks during our week's recording.
All merch includes an album download so you don't have to sacrifice the music for style.
Risks and challenges
We have already recorded this album to tape and started the final stages of mixing and mastering, We have enough money to print the album so if you pledge for a copy we will be able to supply it! But we need some help with promoting the album.
Launching an album costs money. We need to get it in front of the right people so that it gets heard and reviewed by the music press.
So far, we have had good feedback on the early mixes of the album and have signed up a promoter for publicising the tour and getting reviews and radio play.
If we don't reach our kickstarter goal we won't get any of the money from your pledges, and you won't get your preorders or rewards. If this happens, we will still have printed copies of The Loft Tapes to sell at gigs.
But kickstarter is the best way to get a wave of support in one go, so we need you to help us get all the way! We are confident that we can do it, and even have a surprise in store for you if we beat the original target...Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
