About this project
Last Day! Lower the Goal!
As we roll toward the last day of the Shotguns & Sorcery Kickstarter drive, it seems clear that I set the final goal too high again.
I really want to write these books — all three of them. So I'm going to do what I did last time to help ensure that.
I'm lowering the stretch goal for Book 3 — this time to $10k!
If we reach $10k and unlock all three books, everyone who backs this drive for $50 or more gets a free set of the ebook editions from the Brave New World trilogy Kickstarter too!
12 for '12
This is the second part of my 12 for '12 project, a year-long challenge in which I plan to write a novel every month in 2012. I've already used Kickstarter to fund the first trilogy, and now we're onto Wave Two!
By novel, I mean a work of fiction that’s at least 50,000 words, a bit shorter than most of my novels, which tend toward 80,000 words. The Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy Awards each define a novel as anything over 40,000 words, but I want to be a bit more ambitious. And 50,000 words is, not coincidentally, the number of words writers shoot for during National Novel Writing Month.
I plan on breaking 12 for '12 up into four trilogies, and this Kickstarter project represents the second of them: the Shotguns & Sorcery Trilogy. The first one — the Brave New World Trilogy — raised over $13,000, more than four times the original goal. Here's hoping we can beat it.
The Shotguns & Sorcery Trilogy
Shotguns & Sorcery is a fantasy noir setting — think Lord of the Rings written by Raymond Chandler — I first developed as a roleplaying game setting back in 2001. It takes place in a massive city ruled over by a Dragon Emperor who protects the people from the ravenous hordes of undead monsters that mass against its walls. I'd originally licensed it to Mongoose Publishing and hoped to have it in stores in 2002.
And then my wife got pregnant with quadruplets.
That kicked Shotguns & Sorcery past the back burner, out the window, and into the backyard. Cut to ten years later. The kids are fine and healthy, and I'm ready now to dive back into that setting again — but this time as fiction.
I wrote the first Shotguns & Sorcery story last year for Robin D. Laws's upcoming anthology The New Hero 2, from Stone Skin Press. I fell back in love with the world right away, and I returned to it for another story for Marc Tassin's anthology Carnage & Consequences. Now I'm itching to write novels for it.
To give you a taste of the world, I've released that second story — "Goblintown Justice" — for free. Here's the teaser text:
"Ex-adventurer Max Gibson knows he's found trouble when he stumbles out of his favorite tavern and into a murder scene, but when he realizes that both the victim and the blood-spattered orc kneeling over her are old friends of his, it gets far worse. Arrested as an accomplice to the crime, Gibson must work fast to find out what really happened and clear his name before his still-living friend pays the ultimate price."
Please read it, enjoy it, and get excited for what's to come.
Update: Smashwords went down for a day, so I put the story up for free on my site for direct and easy download too.
The Game Plan
As with the Brave New World Trilogy, I'd like to line up $12k worth of pledges, or $4k for each book.
Because I'm so eager to start the first book, though, I'm setting the goal for this Kickstarter project at only $3k. Once we reach that, I'll get ready to start writing the first book on April 2, 2012. After hitting the first goal, we have a couple additional goals to shoot for too:
- $8k: The second book in the trilogy is unlocked! This gets added to the ebook and print omnibus editions rewards for free!
- $10k: The third book in the trilogy is unlocked! This gets added to the ebook and print omnibus editions rewards for free!
I want to thank you in advance for your support. Please pledge whatever you like or can, but also don't forget to spread the word far and wide about this project. Tell your friends, family, and neighbors and even strangers if they'll listen. It's going to be an amazing year, and I really can't wait to have everyone along for the ride!
You only get charged if we reach the listed goal of $3k. That looks likely, and thanks to everyone for that! However, even then your card will only be charged after the project comes to an end on December 4.
Yes, right up to the moment the project closes on December 4. If we get the other books unlocked, for instance, you might see some strong reasons to upgrade from one of the lower levels to one that features an omnibus. Please do! At that point, they're an excellent deal.
Spread the word far and wide. Tweet about it. Share it on Facebook. Plug it on Google+. Tell your friends and neighbors. I'm sure that we'll hit the first goal now, but I want to get those other books unlocked so I can write them for you too. To do that, we'll need lots of others to sign on, and I truly appreciate any and everything you can do to help. Thanks!
Yes! If we unlock all three books in this drive, everyone who back the drive for $50 or more gets free ebook editions of the Brave New World trilogy too!
