We're independent filmmakers in Portland, Oregon who are adapting the novel, Lullaby, from the mind of Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk.
Chuck doesn’t write for mainstream audiences. His books challenge everything about mainstream audiences. His novel Lullaby deploys necrophilia, gender-bending, and no-way-would-this-make-it-to-comfortable-TV satire. We want to make a movie that makes people feel uncomfortable enough to think original thoughts again, just like Chuck’s novels do. To do that we need your help through Kickstarter.
We first got hooked on Chuck’s novels in the late 90’s, like some of you. We're fans first, and so like you, as directors and producers we want to make sure Lullaby is the film we all want it to be, and not some watered-down too easy commercial yawner.
This project is also important to Chuck. He began writing Lullaby during the trial of his father's murderer in 1999. The prosecutor came to Chuck and asked him if he wanted to advocate for the death penalty. This idea spawned the culling song, or the power of the word to cast a spell, and the story of Lullaby was created.
Today, as co-writer of the Lullaby screenplay, Chuck has maintained his vision of what this story should be. As an Executive Producer, he’ll help us make sure that this film stays weird and challenging.
Help us make a movie that doesn’t suck.
So What's It About?
Lullaby follows the life of Carl Streator—an over the hill reporter whose family mysteriously died years prior. After being assigned to investigate a rash of mysterious infant deaths, he discovers the killer of his own family—an ancient culling song published as a lullaby in a simple children's book. Carl sets out to destroy existing copies throughout the world but is surprised to learn that the people he once trusted to stop the deaths may be involved in the heinous acts.
Praise for Lullaby
TIME - “Dark riffing on modernity is the reason people read Palahniuk. His books are not so much novels as jagged fables, cautionary tales about the creeping peril represented by almost everything.”
The Oregonian - “Palahniuk conjures grief, confusion, mystery and fear from the unlikeliest sources . . . [and] teases amusement from the darkest corners of our culture.”
The Daily News - “Twisted and nihilistic . . . the novel packs a dark comic wallop."
People - “Among sick puppies, Palahniuk is the top dog . . . a unique talent.”
- The New York Times - “Mr. Palahniuk further refines his ability to create parables that are as substantial as they are off-the-wall.”
Once we successfully fund this project, we will start production immediately. We've been speaking with some amazing cast and crew, but to solidify any acting professionals, you need to have a budget locked down. We've scheduled the film and have done a lot of pre-production to make the process go quickly once funded.
We plan to shoot in late 2016 in Oregon—we have 27 days planned of principal photography, giving us plenty of time to edit and add visual FX through 2017. If you are trying to be an extra, you'll need to be available during the later part of 2016.
The Budget - To shoot Lullaby, we've put together an initial budget of $250k, but we would like to increase this budget significantly. (Keep in mind, Fight Club was made for $63 million dollars.)
Why give to our project? We, as filmmakers, are dedicated to giving you the best film possible. In the end, a bigger budget will mean a higher quality production. This is where you come in! Here's what a larger budget would mean for the film:
Upgraded visual effects! When it comes to talking cows, it can be a dangerous thing to underfund the VFX! We project an indie VFX budget of at least $200,000, but the bigger our budget, the better the effects, especially for scenes like the Judas Cow and the Seattle Ivy Inferno.
Amazing locations! As Oyster would say, “When you think about it, Johnny Appleseed was a fucking ecological terrorist.” We agree with Oyster. Being that Lullaby takes place at various locations throughout the country, a realistic representation of the environment is important to portray contemporary America and the impact that we've had on our landscape. The bigger the budget, the better the locations.
World class actors! A-list actors are expensive. When Chuck and Andy wrote the screenplay, they had some very notable actors in mind (take a guess at who we're thinking), and are currently in correspondence with these actors. Many of them have read the script and are interested in being a part of the film! That is, so long as we can pay them the salary that their talent demands. With every dollar our budget increases, the closer we move to securing one or more A-list actors.
A kickass crew! Team Lullaby is committed to recruiting and hiring professional crew members, many of which are from right here in Portland, Oregon, but this also includes talented and diverse women and men from around the country. There’s no doubt about it, a great film requires a great crew.
Invested Money Multiplied
We are applying for IOPIF—a film rebate and incentive program for Oregon filmmakers. We have the potential to receive a rebate of 10% on payroll and 20% on goods and services. We will reinvest the funds back into the production. For every dollar we earn, we have the potential of actually spending 120% in Oregon.
Distribution and Film Release
Depending on our festival invitations (wink, wink), we will premiere the film in late 2017 or beginning 2018 and release it publicly thereafter. Distribution usually happens within 18 months after a festival premiere. If we don't secure a distribution deal we are happy with, we will release the film ourselves using art house theaters through our relationship with the Art House Convergence—ensuring that this film will be seen by the public.
Our Key Team Members
The cool thing about our team is that they are all movie lovers. They have lots of experience working on independent films. Our director, Andy Mingo, and Chuck have worked on other projects together including a short, Romance, adapted from a short story of Chuck's, published originally in Playboy, the rights of which were purchased for a bottle of Whiskey and $1.
During Romance's successful festival run, Andy met our producer, and fellow Oregonian, Josh Leake at Raindance Film Festival in London. They were introduced by the Mexican ambassador to the UN during a festival event. Needless to say, they became fast friends and founded their own production company called Mindpollen.
Andy is currently directing the trailers for the Fight Club 2 graphic novel published by Dark Horse Comics with an expected June release date.
You can also see a documentary that our producer helped create on Showtime called Glena, with a feature film adaptation of that in the works. Leake is currently in postproduction on Zombie Day with George C. Romero, which is set to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the most extras in a short film.
We've pulled some talented friends together to help oversee the pre-production, creation and distribution of our rewards, and with your help, make Lullaby into a feature film.
WHAT IS A VIRTUAL PRODUCER?
ARE THERE T-SHIRT COLORS OPTIONS? YES.
Risks and challenges
With any project there are always hurdles. We realize the material may be disturbing and not readily distributed by typical theaters, but we've created a distribution plan around art house theaters—what we consider the backbone of independent film.
With over 2,000 theaters worldwide, we are confident that our film will get seen by the public in most cities around the world, whether or not we secure industry distribution.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The film will enter pre-production once we reach our goal. We anticipate beginning principle shooting in the fall of 2016 and to edit the movie once shooting wraps in early 2017.
We’re hoping to release the film in the first quarter of 2018. It might seem like a long ways off, but filmmaking can be a long process, and we want to make sure we can make the best film possible with your help. We don’t want this to suck, we want this to be great!
During these early stages of development, our team has been in contact with actors that we’d be thrilled to cast as Lullaby’s lead characters. We won’t have anyone locked in for sure until we’re certain we’ve got the funding to accommodate the actors we’re looking to cast. The more funding we receive, the better the chances are to cast more recognizable actors that would bring these characters to life.
It all depends on the rewards.
We don’t know how many backers we are going to have for each reward, so a lot of it depends on just how many back each reward. As soon as the project is funded we will begin the process of creating the rewards such as coffee mugs, art prints and t-shirts and begin to ship those as soon as possible.
For other rewards, the movie must be filmed and released before the rewards can even be developed and created. Rewards such as the film’s official poster, digital downloads and physical copies of the movie will be released following the film’s theatrical debut.
Other rewards, such as the PDF of the movie’s script and Chuck’s annotated scripts, will be release the day the film hits theaters nationally.
Advanced screenings with director Q&As will be held in the weeks prior to the film’s theatrical release. Those events have not been scheduled quite yet, but they will be scheduled far in advance so we can make sure you’ll be able to attend. As of right now, advanced screenings will only take place in the cities listed in the goals. However we’re not opposed to adding more screenings in your city if there’s a sizable amount of interest! Let us know!
The set visits will take place during filming in late 2016, early 2017. The movie will be shot in Oregon. We will coordinate with you as to the exact date of the set visit once we’re sure on our shooting schedule. Transportation and accommodations are not provided.
While you’ll be on camera for the shooting of the scene you’re an extra in, we can’t guarantee that you’ll make the final cut of the film once it hits the editing room. We’ll certainly try to make sure to cast you in a scene that will be most likely to make the final cut. If for some reason you’re edited out of the final cut, we’ll try to coordinate with you to get you a copy of the deleted scene.
The Virtual Producer reward is a first of it’s kind on Kickstarter. If you donate $40 to become a Virtual Producer you will be inducted into a voting pool that will actively make decisions throughout the pre-production and production phase of the movie. You will help us to choose things like costumes, extras casting, and dialogue. You will receive more information on the Virtual Producer once the Lullaby Kickstarter campaign has closed.
Principal photography for Lullaby will begin in or around October of 2016. We plan to shoot between October of 2016 and January of 2017 in Oregon. Post production will continue into and through the spring and summer of 2017 giving us plenty of time to edit and add visual F/X. Following post production we’ll tour the film to festivals both nationally and internationally. Then, Lullaby will premiere theatrically in the United States sometime around September of 2018.
Is a fancy word of a piece of art.
We struggled a lot with the dilemma of whether or not to charge for shipping. Of course we’d love to ship everything to you for free, but financially it just isn’t feasible. Ultimately, we felt more secure insuring each order and protecting the quality of your items. And that’s what you’ll get with the additional shipping cost. Your rewards will ship domestically, within the United States by USPS Priority Mail, with a tracking code, as well as come with basic insurance, guaranteeing that they will arrive safe and undamaged. For international shipping, the costs are slightly more for obvious reasons. We shopped around to make sure that the shipping cost you pay will be the cheapest possible.
The reason shipping costs are as such, is due the waves in which the rewards ship. The t-shirt, frameable art print, and beanie can all be shipped together, but the DVD/Blu-Ray and the official Lullaby movie poster both require their own respective shipping due to creation and release of the movie.
The shipping costs are not reflected in the price of the donations/rewards.
The backers only screenings with director Q&A are for one person. Each donation is one seat. If you'd like an addition seat, you're welcome to add a plus one as an additional donation and we'll make sure they are accounted for. Please contact us for additional information.
You bet! Even though we're still a ways out when it comes to producing DVDs or Blu-Rays, we're going to make sure that no matter where you live, it will play in your location.
When the project finished you will be sent a survey. In that survey you will be able to select the appropriate size for your tee!
If you pledged over $30, you will receive your name in the credits. When the campaign is completed, you will be sent a survey. In that survey, you will be able to denote just how you'd like the name in the credits or on the library check-out card to appear.
Yes, there are official Lullaby posters in both the $75 and $80 rewards. The difference is that the posters in the $75 reward are folded when they ship, whereas the $80 reward posters ship in a tube.
