The Edinburgh University Footlights are delighted to announce our return to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe for the third time, this year with the iconic musical, RENT!
This revolutionary rock musical follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished artists struggling to survive in the East Village of '90s New York. Knee deep in his own soul-searching, an aspiring filmmaker, Mark, starts to feel like life’s outsider whilst the physical and emotional complications of HIV/AIDS pervade the lives of his friends Roger, Mimi, Collins, and Angel. Through her performance art, Maureen deals with her chronic infidelity as her partner, Joanne, wonders if their relationship is even worth the trouble. Meanwhile, Benny has sold out his Bohemian ideals entirely in exchange for real estate power and a hefty income. Whilst facing the battles of love, loss and HIV/AIDS, the group’s bohemian ideals are constantly challenged as they attempt to find artistic fulfillment and happiness in the wider world.
RENT is an epic musical about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today. Featuring iconic numbers including 'Seasons of Love' and 'La Vie Boheme', this is musical theater at its finest. With songs that rock, music that defined a generation and a story that resonates across all ages, Jonathon Larson’s RENT was a pop cultural phenomenon that still unites audiences almost 3 decades after its opening and Footlights’ production will be no different.
The Edinburgh University Footlights is one of the largest university musical theater companies in Scotland and we are homegrown in Edinburgh itself. We are a completely student run and self-funded company. Across our history we have provided countless opportunities to upcoming musical theater talent in the UK. RENT will provide an exciting new opportunity for a new generation of performers and will be a celebration of the budding talent that Footlights has to offer. Following two 5-star productions at the 2018 and 2017 fringe, we've up-sized this year to join Gilded Balloon Teviot Venue. This will be our first production with the venue and our largest festival production yet! Fringe can be daunting and the costs are high so we need your help to make this production happen!
Risks and challenges
Putting on a production, especially a musical, at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival carries multiple financial and logistical risks. The opportunity to perform at the world largest arts festival is unparalleled however the competition between shows is incredibly hard and makes the financial burden difficult to carry. We will be running other fundraising events in July to help support our funding as well as running an impressive marketing campaign to sell as many tickets as possible. However, we need every bit of help you can give to get our show on the road!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
