About this project
The Folks Behind The Funnies is where we meet the creative genius behind our most beloved newspaper comic strips.
Twenty-One of the most famous North American cartoonists talk candidly about themselves, each other and what inspires them. The artists of Beetle Bailey, Dilbert, The Family Circus, Hagar the Horrible, For Better or For Worse, Dennis the Menace, Zits, and Cathy - just to name a few - give us an intimate glimpse into their unique perspective on life and The Funnies.
Everyday, to millions of readers in almost every nation on earth, comic strip characters appear as familiar friends in newspapers and on the internet. Yet few of us know much about the history of those characters, or the cartoonists who created them.
I had the privilege of interviewing twenty-one of the most popular newspaper cartoonists in the world. A lifelong fan of daily comic strips - over the years I was fortunate to befriend many of these immensely talented people, who make our lives a little brighter everyday.
What I discovered was the tremendous respect and insight that they had for each other and the comic strip artists and writers who came before them. In short - just like reading 'the comics', it was fun. Now, I want to share it with everyone!
At the National Cartoonists Society's annual Reuben awards weekend, I sat down with them individually, to get their take on comic strips and life as they see it.
Hours of great interviews are featured in this upbeat and often irreverent visit with the folks behind, what is affectionately called, The Funnies.
We discover that the artists and writers behind our daily Funnies are as inspiring and familiar as the characters they create.

Four years of careful research and development went into producing this incredible footage, and we believe it shows. We would like the post-production to reflect the same level of quality. Editing all the material in to an entertaining show is only part of our budget. Music licensing, gathering all the great comic strip artwork to support the interviews, and all the various technical and artistic finishing elements - definitely adds up. The bottom line. This is a polished documentary, that reflects the stature of the cartoonists and their work.
We know that comic strip fans and audiences in general will enjoy the insight and warmth of this show. With your help, we can bring this labor of love to fruition.

Risks and challenges
Principle photography for The Folks Behind the Funnies is done and we are in the post-production phase of the film. Our biggest challenges may arise regarding rights and the licensing of material. However, having the support of our interview subjects and others in the industry will go a long way to help us finish the film as planned.
We want to complete The Folks as soon as possible and will not have other project distractions. While we do not anticipate any major delays, we will be sure to update our backers and be completely transparent about any problems that might arise. We look forward to fulfilling our rewards promises to you and, like the film itself, if there are unexpected delays in delivery, we will be sure to update you as well.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Yes. After the principal photography was shot, the first thing we did was to get transcriptions done that will be turned into the files needed to put the captioning in place.
All of our footage, whether used in the film or put into the archive will have captioning included.
No, this is the actual raw footage unaltered other than to put in a test background for the green screen. The output is currently in 2k format and needs to be color adjusted for broadcast. The sound will be tweaked to ensure that it is the there are no artifacts hiding anywhere in soundtrack.
