About this project
About Burning Man
For one week a year we all create a living city together in the middle of the nearly lifeless Black Rock Desert. Then just as quickly as it appears, it disappears again. We go to share beautiful art and experiences with each other and with Blumen Lumen, we want to create an experience where the barren, hostile desert provides a serene sanctuary during the day.
Special thanks to Roy Two Thousand for lending his Burning Man timelapse video! http://roy2k.com/ http://vimeo.com/roytwothousand
Blumen Lumen is an oasis of surreal and over-sized flowers that invites us to explore and gather underneath.
They come to life at night — the flowers are truly ALIVE and aware of our presence. The energy and movement we give is returned by our surroundings: they open up, light up, and make their own display of lights as we move around them.
We are a team of engineers and designers who work together, make together and have burned together for over 4 years. The concept was inspired from Origami—unique forms can be created from a single sheet with the right folds and geometry. This is a process that was perfected from several previous projects. including an emergency shelter design, and a yurt we built that has come to 3 previous burns.
We have done a lot of experimentation and prototyping and have built a completely functional flower. The next steps will be to build more flowers and program the interactions that will make them come alive! With every thousand dollars we raise, we can bring an additional flower to life with goal of create 7 or more. This includes the cost of materials, electronics and mechanical pieces used to make the flowers move.
Not only are we building Blumen Lumen as an experience for the Burning Man community in 2014, but Blumen Lumen will come to life in public spaces in the Bay Area after they return from the Playa.
We've received an initial grant from the Black Rock Arts Foundation but we need your help. By helping us raise at least $10,000, you will make it possible for us to complete the garden with 7 total flowers, complete with animatronics, lighting, and sound, but most importantly create a transformative experience that can be enjoyed by everyone.
You can help us bring this to life!
With your help we can make Blumen Lumen come to life at Burning Man 2014 and beyond. Please share this page on Facebook and Twitter and link to our micro-site: www.foldhaus.com/blumenlumen.
Risks and challenges
Through the money already raised through a grant from The Black Rock Arts Foundation, we focused heavily on prototyping each component of Blumen Lumen, iterating through several versions and solving problems along the way. Currently we have successfully created one entire working full-scale flower, with production-level actuation, lighting, and physical support structure. While we are sure we will run into new challenges as we produce the rest of our garden and linking the flowers together, we deliberately tackled the hard problems first and are confident in our ability to work through those yet to surface!
In addition to our dedicated team or skilled designers, engineers, and artists, we have at out disposal a full professional wood and metal shop where we have spent the last several months working on the prototypes as well as the support and advice of additional professionals and long-time burners alike. Should unexpected problems arise there are many resources we can call upon to make sure our project is a success and that your generous donations are put to the best use!
We are passionate about creating this experience and bringing it to a variety of audiences. It is a challenge creating dynamic art at this scale, having it withstand harsh environments as well as several set-up and tear-down cycles. But we are committed to making it happen by working as hard as we possibly can and to tackling the challenge with everything we have. Indeed, we feel the biggest risk facing us at this moment is to have come this far and not be able to turn our one tall and proud flower into a garden and an engaging and illuminating experience for all.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
