Ladies and Gentlemen welcome to the first of The Warpod Databanks. WARPOD: The Battle of Junker Forge. Flytrap Factorys latest kickstarter campaign set in its whimsically robotic universe.
Warpod is a narrative tabletop skirmish game for 2+ players involving two or more robotic armies clashing in a bitter struggle for dominion over the moon of Destron. The rulesystem accompanying our developing range of miniatures has been designed with enough depth and elegance to satisfy the most discerning tastes, yet young-person friendly enough to appeal to budding apprentice commanders.
(Please note that miniatures in this campaign are made of white metal and resin, some items will require assembly and glue (not included), these are gaming pieces not toys and not recommended for persons under 13 years of age.)
A BRIEF OVERVIEW
The Warpod story is set on the backwater moon of Destron, far flung deep in the forgotten reaches of known space. Discovered by denizens of the local galactic populace only recently (as in the last thousand years) Destron was identified as a fertile moon, rich with resources ripe for the plunder. Consent for claiming rights were quickly rubber stamped by systemic authorities and a transportable automated colonial habitat was dispatched via freighter mere months later. Despite an interstellar war which had been raging in this sector for decades the freighter arrived intact and the hab unit was dropped from high orbit where it successfully made planetfall.
Within days the first programmable operating devices or PODs had emerged from the hab and set about the task of surveying and establishing a beach head of sorts for gradual development and satellite expansion. The PODs provided a small, inexpensive but highly functioning and reliable robotic workforce and were used throughout the galaxy by leading corporations bent on charting the stars and milking the unexplored depths of space for lucrative mining prospects
Each of these patented automated habitats housed a workforce of one hundred PODS, each designated into one of 4 distinct programmed classes or functions. The RG-3 unit was a construction POD whose function was to build infrastructure and setup the factories, machine shops and mining installations in key location across the moon.
The TR-7 unit was a science bot of sorts with a dual affinity towards technical design and construction, the TR units would design the various machines and equipment needed to traverse the moons environs and the equipment necessary to harvest it.
The WK-9 unit was designated the laborer POD of the robotic populace, with programming substantially less specialised or advanced than its sibling PODs. The job of the WK-9 was to provide the muscle required to mine the moon itself and to operate the heavy machinery needed to do so, indirectly the WK unit was built to be stronger, more durable and better able to weather the extremes of Destron than its counterparts.
The last designation was programmed in the CN-6 units, their function... security. Given the warring state of many of the galactic systems it was deemed necessary by the bean counters to house within an automated colony an insurance on their investment, a force capable of providing a defensive measure against hostile encounters be they native to the environment they inhabit, or foreign like many of the roving pirate bands that plagued the space-faring trade routes.
The colonisation of Destron was a text book operation. The RG units were quick to setup the first mechanical manufacturing construct, and in short order the techshops had begun churning out the thousands of replicant PODs required to facilitate expansive colonisation.
Within three years the city sized mechanical and technical manufacturing construct along with an adjoining seaport for offshore drilling operations, a starport for docking interstellar resource freighters and a fully functioning logistical mining hub was complete. This land spanning iron behemoth was named Junker Forge and it would become the moons capital habitat and the central point of conflict in this early stage of the long war to come.
I'll refrain from delving any further into the lore here (else we will never get on with the campaign) preferring to save the story for the upcoming rule-art-lore book that this campaign will help us to accomplish. The Warpod book will cover the entirety of the conflict to date from the initial corruption of the PODs caused by the Glitch through to the war at hand. Needless to say it is a tale of betrayal, of war and ultimately one that will never end.
For at the conclusion of each solar cycle the surviving remnants of each warring faction lower their weapons to pilfer through the mechanical carnage strewn across the battlefield. Collecting weapons, salvaging spare parts, repairing the damaged and recycling the destroyed. Through the long low battery hours of the lunar cycle they replenish and rebuild their numbers, a mismanaged and malfunctioning frankenstein hodgepodge of re-commissioned PODs and NODEs prepped for the coming day and yet another round of bitter fighting.
THE PURPOSE OF THE CAMPAIGN
What is the purpose of this Kickstarter Campaign?: The purpose of this campaign is multi-faceted. By achieving the funding we will finally be able to allocate the time and resources needed to....
- Sculpt the Remaining Miniatures: Required to complete this first installment of the greater Warpod tale and also for the upcoming Warpod Rulebook. (We have a lot already completed and more in varying stages of completion, but we are still a ways off where we need to be prior to the launch of the Rulebook.) In addition to the slew of miniatures I have scheduled on my own design bench I aim to enlist the help of miniatures vehicle designer extraordinaire Ian 'Waz' Wyatt, a very dear friend of mine, responsible for many of the heavy Warcrates you will see at the later stages of this campaign. known for his wonderful work in the realm of Ork vehicles for Warhammer 40K I am extremely privileged to have him working beside me in the development of future Warpod products.
- Purchase the Production Resources: Silicone rubber, white metal and resin for the Warpod miniature range and their supporting vehicles line required to manufacture the range. The RTV Silicone rubber and high quality odourless polyurethane resin for our vehicle kits are sourced locally. The 9" Vulcanising blanks we use for spincasting white metal are sourced from our suppliers in the United States. We need to be able to acquire enough raw materials to cater for all pledges (and then some) and with a little luck have enough product left over to move into the development of the next phase of Warpod related products.
- Produce the Warpod Rulebook: Initially this will be done as a Living Rulebook pdf format (exactly as we did the Caveman Vs Wild Rulebook in our previous Kickstarter) and will be available via this campaign as such. We are working towards a hardcover print run at some point in the future (Not a part of this campaign.) This book will not only cover all of the rules needed to play the narrative skirmish game but it will also heavily feature stunning artwork from a fantastic array of selected artists such as Mihajlo 'The Mico' Dimitrievski of international gaming industry fame, Joshua Qualtieri, the supremely talented mastermind behind Zombiesmith Miniatures and his team of extraordinary artizans, Alex Nelson responsible for so much of the beautiful art already showcased and the crew at Steel Wool Games in California for the amazing digital models, renders and animations they created for Warpod and which we have featured liberally throughout parts of this campaign. On top of the art and the rules, the full lore of Warpod and its extensive tale is chronicled, penned and ready for general consumption.
- Bring Warpod To Our Community.... and with the level of polish we expect. This brand new generation of Warpod miniatures has been a long time coming with version one released approximately 6 years ago, now long since OOP. Note for all those who own collections of our first generation Warpod miniatures this new generation is scaled identically and are both not only fully compatible with generation two, they will also have featured stats in the upcoming Warpod rulesystem. With Flytrap Factory no miniatures become redundant in any of our systems .
What this Kickstarter is not: This campaign is not just another pre-order system used for purchasing a miniatures line that is already fully developed, completed and market ready. Warpod needs your help to see it fully realised and pushed through to its anticipated polished ready-for-prime-time state.
HOW THIS CAMPAIGN WORKS
We have decided to keep the Warpod campaign really simple. We have four pledge levels (aside from if you just want the rulebook pdf) these are the Patrol pledge, the Raid pledge, the Battle pledge and the War pledge (for the real metal-heads). Each pledge level gives you a basic force of Warpods dependent upon the number of miniatures you wish to field.
All other ancillary force options ie: 'everything else' is provided as addon options. This way when it comes to organising your pledge, all you simply have to do is indicate in your campaign survey at the end of the campaign which faction(s) you wish to field and at what size force level (Patrol, Raid, Battle or War) and then list any/all addon force support options you wish to plug in to your main warring body of robotic combatants.
- At $5000NZD and at $8000NZD we have our two additional faction unlocks. Note that we are rolling out the Warpod universe in sequential format following the story from the beginning outbreak of hostilities (with this campaign) through to future installments later on down the track as the range grows. 'The Battle of Junker Forge' is chiefly centered around the series of skirmishes and battles fought between the Rigger and Clanker factions, however there were to a lesser extent the other two core factions present on both sides (POD and NODE) during the battles and hence we have included them in this campaign as faction unlocks. Moving deeper into the Warpod story we will see the Tinkers and the Wreckers really move to the forefront.
- At $12000NZD we have our first warpod unit unlock, the Commando Assault Brick.
- At $15000NZD we have our first warcrate unit unlock, the 'Clunk' Heavy Warcrate.
- At $17000NZD we have our second warcrate unit unlock, the 'Trudge' Heavy Warcrate.
- At $21000NZD we have our third warcrate unit unlock, the 'Dredge' Super Heavy Warcrate.
If we get to this stage I'll have to fast forward some other developments and dig into my bag of goodies to entice you Warpod crazy podlers to continue your madness!
THE INITIAL FACTIONS
We begin this campaign with the two main combatants in 'The Battle of Junker Forge'... the RIGGER (PODs) and the CLANKER (NODEs)
THE PLEDGE LEVELS
The first product related pledge level is for the Warpod Miniatures Game Rulebook pdf. This is a full colour, illustrated living rulebook which will experience a vigorous period of critique and refinement in much the same way we finalised our 'Caveman Vs Wild' rulebook in our previous Kickstarter campaign. All persons who pledge at this level or higher will be invited to join an exclusive group to participate in the continued refinement of this system. It worked wonders for us with Caveman Vs Wild I have no doubt we will enjoy similar success with Warpod. Eventually the rulebook will be turned into a hardcover print, but at this early stage of the development cycle it will not be part of this campaign... only the Living Rulebook pdf.
The 'Warpod The Miniatures Game' Rulebook is supplied free to any pledge of $90NZD or higher (not incl shipping). For pledges below $90NZD (not incl shipping) the Rulebook pdf is $20NZD and will be supplied on or before the fulfillment date stated for this campaign.
Special Note: We have included the rulebook pdf as a free throw in for our supporters at this pledge level to help offset the sting of international shipping. (Being a New Zealand based business means that sometimes things work against us when it comes to getting our products into international hands. This is but one small offering we can make to balance the playing field.)
Here are our four Miniature related Pledge Levels.
Ideal for testing the waters or for those small actions involving clandestine teams of Warpods operating deep behind enemy lines, the Patrol pledge gives you 12 (28mm/1:50 scaled) single-part Warpods cast in white metal.
Suitable as the crux of your Warpod force the 'Block' gives you two basic maneuver elements or 'Bricks' with which to bring war to the enemy. An ideal backbone for a larger Warpod force guarding the frontline. The Raid pledge gives you 24 (28mm/1:50 scaled) single-part Warpods cast in white metal.
For larger actions where commanders simply demand more robotic brawn for the iron-grinder this force level comprises three combat bricks giving 'Slab' leaders additional tactical options and greater depth of command. Supplement this force with additional specialised bricks to experience Warpods full battle effect in action. The Battle pledge gives you 36 (28mm/1:50 scaled) single-part Warpods cast in white metal.
Note that the 'Battle Formations' Addons list is a new amended feature requested by a number of our backing community. It is for backers who would like to pledge on multiple opposing factions or invest further into a selected chosen faction. Apologies for not having included it earlier, a simple oversight... thanks.
ALL ITEMS IN THE ADDONS LIST FOR BOTH WARPODS AND WARCRATES ARE BY DEFAULT UNLOCKED AND AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE NOW AS PART OF THIS CAMPAIGN.
ALL ITEMS IN THE ADDONS LIST FOR BOTH WARPODS AND WARCRATES ARE BY DEFAULT UNLOCKED AND AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE NOW AS PART OF THIS CAMPAIGN.
Please note that unless you specifically order a 'Brick' of Warcrates (3 individual Warcrates to a brick) you are purchasing individual Warcrates, the prices listed above are otherwise per individual unit.
Universal WarCrates: During the outbreak of war on Destron the only faction to have any form of weaponry or armoured fighting vehicles were the Clankers. The Riggers, Tinkers and Wreckers who remained PODs who were unscathed by the effects of the Glitch had to fight with stolen, modified or reverse engineered versions of equipment captured or stolen from the security forces during the initial onslaught. Tinkers and Wreckers who were contaminated by the Glitch and turned NODE were often subsequently equipped by their corrupted Clanker allies. Hence the WarCrates listed above are predominantly universal in scope among all factions at the outbreak of War. It is not until later that each faction splintered away and started to pioneer their own unique adaptations and forms of fighting machine.
(Please note that all miniatures produced in white metal and resin will require washing in warm soapy water prior to assembly. Resin components may require extra preparation, clean up and assembly, it is simply the nature of the polyurethane material we utilise in our manufacturing process.)
THE FACTION UNLOCKS
Here are our two Faction Unlocks.
Over half of the Tinker population was corrupted by the Glitch when it occurred, turning several thousand of the little robotic geniuses effectively into mad robionical NODE scientists (with guns) These NODEs followed suit joining forces with their Clanker allies in decimating all POD resistance they could locate. The mechafactories of Junker Forge were Tinker territory and the fallen NODEs were going to take it for themselves. Tinker PODs fortunate enough to survive the onslaught fled into the deserts, the mountains and the sea only to join up with Rigger forces and surviving wreckers to regroup and rally under the uncorrupted POD banner,
$5000 funded unlocks our third faction: the Tinkers. Tinker pledges and supporting addon options are exactly the same as for the Riggers and the Clankers. Simply indicate in your pledge survey the faction your selection refers to.
As with the Tinkers, the Wrecker population suffered terrible malfunction during the Glitch. Junker Forge housed at least 65% of the Wrecker population who laboured tirelessly day and night in the huge stinking off-world mining dump construct on the outskirts of the iron city. Grumpy and twitchy at the best of times, the Wreckers that turned NODE wasted no time at all in finding new purpose for their rock grinders, ore wrenchers and jack hammers... the mechanical carnage left in the wake of the rampaging Wrecker NODE work-packs was appalling and many hundreds of PODs were lost at the hands of these relentless bots.
Wrecker pledge and supporting addon options are exactly the same as for the Tinkers, the Riggers and the Clankers. Simply indicate in your pledge survey the faction your selection refers to.
The Unit Unlocks
Here are our Unit Unlocks.
Our 1st Generation Warpod Commandos were very popular back when we first released Warpod some 6 odd years ago. The re-release of these highly valued units under the Generation Two revamped Warpod range will build upon their legacy with a slew of new miniatures and exciting new weapons. Each of the four factions utilise their own distinct commando units within their arsenals, all very individualised with a touch of malfunctioning chaos added for extra warmongering flavour.
...and there is a lot more where that came from. If there is the demand we will push further into the realm of armoured warfare in Warpods robotic universe. Ian 'Waz' Wyatt is a very close friend of Flytrap Factory and we would jump at the opportunity to expand this universe with his fantastic warmongering iron creations.
At 30k we will take Warpod on a whole new road... (we will talk about this one more once we get there!)
Note: Please add the correct shipping amount to your pledge once you have decided which level of product and addons you wish to pledge upon.
Risks and challenges
Risk is minimal for this campaign. Flytrap Factory is an experienced miniatures company which has operated successfully for six years and has a reputation for both quality, communication and reliability.
This is 'Flytrap Factorys' fifth Kickstarter campaign. We have been involved in two partnered up with 'Zombiesmith Miniatures' and this is our third (not counting our unfortunately failed 'Heroics Incorporated' campaign) going solo. Flytraps latest Kickstarter 'Caveman Vs Wild: The Big Chill" our most recent success has recently been completed to fulfillment with a happy and supremely supportive community actively participating an enjoying the fruits of that campaign.
Anton has been sculpting, molding and casting for 16 years for both of his own company Flytrap Factory as well as other client companies in need of sculpting/molding or manufacturing solutions. These companies include WeeWolf Miniatures, Special Artisan Services Miniatures, Warlord Games, Treefrog Games, Battlefront Miniatures, Zombiesmith Miniatures, Mike Bravo Miniatures, IDesigns, Flashpoint Miniatures (Reloaded), Clearhorizon Miniatures, Worlds End Publishing, ACP Games, Microworld Games, Siege Works Studios, Sword and Boardgames and others my old brain can't quite remember at this point.
Casting/manufacturing and packaging will likely be done either on site by Anton in Flytraps manufacturing premises here in New Zealand or in the care of good friend and miniature manufacturing business owner John Popson of Effin Cool Miniatures in Ohio USA. If this project is funded, all outstanding miniatures will be sculpted and both master and production molds will be created immediately upon the conclusion of this campaign and casting will begin once molds are completed.
Based on previous experience with our suppliers and given the time of the year we are operating in we expect the first miniatures to be delivered no longer than 8 months following the completion of the campaign. We expect all pledges to be fully completed and in the hands of our supporters no later than June 2018.
Should the campaign go completely bonkers successful Flytrap Factory has allies in both the United States and the United Kingdom who are on standby to step in and assist us in the delivery of this project. However with projected dates and expected success I do not foresee any problems in a timely conclusion and fulfillment period.
Regardless, updates and progress reports will be posted regularly and Anton will be on hand to the best of his ability to answer questions. Also feel free to pm Anton via Facebook where he is never too far away to chat :)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
