About this project

The Festival:

This summer, Flying Kites, in partnership with Goodmaker Films and the Hot Sun Foundation, will travel to Kenya’s Kibera slum.  They will follow and film the orphaned children of the Oasis program in their run-up to the inaugural Oasis Festival, a live music and dance show unlike any that Kibera has ever seen.  Thousands of orphaned boys and girls from children’s homes around Nairobi will come together with the Kibera community for a joyous and powerful celebration of the power of hope and the strength of a common purpose.

The Oasis Festival will unite the orphaned children of Nairobi’s slums with Kenyan pop stars Jimmy Gait, Daddy Owen, and Dashy Krew, as well as international music talent.  Daytime workshops will lead into the main concert, with children performing their compositions interspersed with hits by top Kenyan talent.  Children, artists, and an expected audience of 15-20,000 will join for an unforgettable final piece, the specially-commisioned “I Demand Freedom.”

Flying Kites believes that real change is possible, and that it is our responsibility to effect that change. We also believe that we can best serve our children when we lead our own lives with passion, energy and commitment; the festival is a loud, clear statement of our purpose and conviction.

It’s going to big, it’s going to be bold and it’s going to be a joyous and unrestrained celebration of the very best of humanity!

The Documentary:

The film will follow Flying Kites' Oasis program as it builds up to this extraordinary day, an event that will rally the community behind those who are determined to start a new chapter in Kibera's story. It will show the intense workshops that will be conducted over the two weeks preceding the festival; music, dance, spoken word, live art, and photography will all feature, local talent and their US counterparts collaborating in a powerful and unique way. Final cuts will be 30 minutes, 6 minutes and 1:30min.

Exposure:

The Africa Channel: television network focused solely on Africa with content either from or about the continent. The Africa Channel wants to see our film include the exchange between the orphanage directors, the children and Flying Kites program staff, to demonstrate the development work that is having the greatest impact in Africa, and to show  how collaboration offers the best hope for the future.

Kenyan Media: the festival will be heavily promoted and supported by local media outlets, celebrities and politicians. K24 and KBC television channels and the newspapers The Daily Nation and The Standard with provide coverage of the event, and providing exposure in the build-up to the festival.

ShortsHD: Combines total media impressions in excess of 40 million households through Dish, DirecTV, and AT&T Uverse.   ShortsHD Network has requested that our Oasis film reflect the unique stories of the children who are being captured in the film and, particularly, the ‘behind the scenes’ lead-up to the Oasis Event.  ShortsHD Network is a hub for filmmakers and multimedia storytellers who go to extreme lengths to capture compelling stories.  The demographic reflects a young audience who care deeply about human rights and have a particular interest in films that highlight developing countries.

Pogo: the phenomenal Pogo takes video and audio and remixes them into unique pieces of music- music video style. His videos have 30 million+ hits on YouTube and he has a huge cult following.  Pogo will be spending two weeks with the project in Kenya and producing several remixes of his experience working with the team there.

Film Festivals: the film will be entered into appropriate festivals on the circuit

Notes:

1) Matching funds challenge: two donors in Los Angeles have been kind enough to have offered a matching funds challenge to a maximum of $20,000: ie if the funding target here on Kickstarter is met it will be matched dollar-to-dollar.

2) Can we exceed the target? Absolutely!  We have been careful to set a realistic target for this fundraising round, to ensure that we don't risk falling foul of the 'all-or-nothing' funding rule.

3) If you are in Kenya during the summer you are more than welcome to come to the Oasis Festival and be a part of a unique experience! Contact me through the website and I will give you directions on how to find us.

4) Tax Deduction: any contribution to this non-profit film project can be written off against taxes, less the value of any received item. Please email me if you would like a tax receipt for your donation!

We will work hard to make sure that every penny invested is used with maximum efficiency.  50% of the overall budget has been contributed by members of the crew, and this is a project where there is one goal: to bring the story of these incredible children and their incredible carers to a wide audience.
