Stretch Goal Time!
We're so excited to have reached our goal ahead of time! Thank you all so much for your support and contributions! We have just a couple of days left and we've decided to add a stretch goal! Our project will be funded now (as long as no one cancels their pledge!) whether we reach our stretch goal or not. Our goal is bold, but, hey, why not!?
If our project reaches $17,000 before the end of our campaign, we will install live streaming cameras for the goats and every backer who has contributed will receive a link and password to watch the goats do their thing, 24 hours a day!
Our priority is, of course, the cheesery build, but installing cameras in the barn has been something we've been hoping to do for several years- we will be better able to keep an eye on the ladies and babies during kidding season- so we thought this would be a fun thing to share with our backers!
Flying Goat Farm has been producing high quality, fresh goats' milk cheeses for sale in Maine since 2009. Run by Devin and Cara on a quiet bit of land in the southern part of the state, at Flying Goat Farm, it's all about the goats! We believe that tasty cheese comes from happy and healthy animals and our animals are our number one priority; we take care of them, and they provide us with high quality milk to make delicious cheese!
Over the past few years, Flying Goat Farm has perfected our line of cheeses, including goat cheese standards such as chévre and feta, but also our specialty cheeses, including Scapegoat (made with local, organic garlic scapes), Chévre Noir (made with wild Maine black trumpet mushrooms), and Bloomy Goat (chévre aged to form a delicate rind). Flying Goat Farm was a founding member of the Sanford, Maine Farmers' Market in 2009, and in 2013, we are members of four local farmers' markets, as well as selling cheese to locally owned and operated restaurants.
The Project: More Space for More Cheese!
Our original cheesery room was not built to handle the milk that our growing herd is capable of producing and we are in a race against time. This season, with ten does in milk, making eight to ten gallons of milk daily, we are barely keeping up with processing milk into cheese in four or five batches of two gallons each every day. Next season, we have twelve plus more girls on deck to be producing milk and we need a place to put it!
We have the once in a lifetime opportunity to purchase a goat dairy set up from a neighboring farm that is retiring from the cheese business. This equipment will include a 40 gallon bulk milk storage tank, stainless piping, and a 30 gallon legal pasteurizer, not to mention all kinds of other cheesemaking goodies- cheese molds, hand tools, curd harps, etc. Funds raised from this kickstarter campaign will go towards finalizing the purchase of this equipment and building the space to hold it! The modifications to our existing dairy have already been approved by our dairy inspector and she is ready to sign off on our build as soon as we are finished, allowing us to sell our cheese outside of the state of Maine and ship it all over the country!
Risks and challenges
Risks and challenges are in inherent part of any kind of farming. We have grown well accustomed to this lifestyle and strongly believe in the saying "Nothing ventured, nothing gained." We have tried very hard to make sure that this project can be seen through to completion with few, if any, setbacks.
In our initial dairy build in 2009, as well as our new barn build last summer, we learned that these types of things often take longer than we hope. We have tried to get all of our ducks in a row before starting our expansion. We will need to expand our dairy space, add plumbing and electricity and a new entrance directly into it. We have friends and family on board to make the build from our tiny cheesery to our upgraded space as fast and straight forward as possible.
Should unexpected setbacks arise, we believe that the first and most important thing we do is communicate what is going on with our backers. We have set our backer rewards with a timeline that we feel confident that we can meet, and we look forward to showing our thanks to all of our backers!
