STRETCH GOAL - £1200 - Once reached, all backers will get an exclusive hand-printed 'Bear Hug' greetings card blank inside to add your own message.
Who? - My name is Rachel and I'm a glass artist, not the blowing kind or the church window variety (although they are cool too!) but the kiln-forming type. This basically means I cut, paint, stack, poke, beg the glass into position or in molds inside a kiln before closing the lid and hoping that it turns out how I envisage after the program of heating and cooling finishes. Mostly it does, sometimes it doesn't, which can also be interesting too!
What? - A couple of years ago, I learnt how to water-jet cut glass from an expert in the technique and used it to create precisely cut silhouettes. My first project was a 2m tall boxing hare, who is printed with Victorian photographs and I then moved onto smaller hares, followed by foxes, trees, hedgehogs and cacti. Some of these are mounted on the wall, while others are free-standing and most with a variety of patterns printed on them.
Moving on from the woodland creatures I have already made, I want to introduce a bear to the collection with the hope that it becomes another firm favourite. I've designed the cut-line I want to use as well as some initial imagery for screen-printing onto the glass as well.
Where? - I work from my studio in Edinburgh, Scotland, where I have 4 kilns of various sizes to fire the different glass I make. As well as firing glass, my space is also equipped for polishing and engraving the glass. Much of my work is screen-printed with kiln-fired enamels and I prepare all these screens myself in the studio too.
How? - The funds raised will go towards the cost of the glass, time on the water-jet machine and all the packaging for the finished pieces. I've designed the pledge levels to reward you with something physical no matter what amount you pledge and the opportunity to be the first to own the glass bears themselves.
This is my first Kickstarter project so please let me know if you have any questions or want to know more about any aspect of the glass work.
I will also be updating this regularly with more photos of the bear designs as I think of them, as well as news about the work and anything else that might be of interest!
(Unless stated, all pledge rewards include international shipping, so there are no additional shipping fees to pay)
NEW REWARD - Small Wooden Bears - When water-jet cutting the glass a sheet of plywood is placed underneath to protect the glass so a wooden brother or sister is cut out at the same time. These wooden bears have been plucked from the machine, washed, kiln dried and are ready for you to decorate or finish as you wish.
The Tote Bag - The bags are made from natural coloured cotton and are hand screen printed with the bear silhouette in black ink.

Handle Length - 38cm / 15 inches
Bear Brooches - The brooches are individually handmade from bright coloured opaque flat glass that is hand screen printed in kiln fired enamel with the bear design onto the surface.
After firing, it is carefully digitally cooled for strength and safety in the kiln, before being polished and mounted on a nickel-free silver plated brooch finding. Each one comes in a gift box too.

The swatch below shows the colours you can choose from and I will contact backers at the end of the project.
Bear Sculptures - The bears will be cut from chunky 10mm / 3/8 inch thick clear glass and come in two sizes.
Small bears are free-standing, mounted on a transparent green flat glass base and measure;
Height - 110mm / 4 1/4 inches
Width - 190mm / 7 1/2 inches
Depth - 20mm / 3/4 inch
Large bears hang on the wall using a discreet acrylic bracket fixed onto the reverse. They measure;
Height - 155mm / 6 inches
Width - 280mm / 11 inches
Depth - 20mm / 3/4 inch
Finishes & Designs - Both sizes can be left clear, sandblasted for a frosted look or screen-printed with kiln-fired enamels in the different designs shown as well as a custom one of your own.
Custom Cut Piece - This pledge level allows you to design a precision cut piece of glass that can be a free-standing sculpture or wall mounted panel. The maximum size is limited to a 21 x 28cms / 8 1/4 x 11 inches and cut from 10mm / 3/8 inch glass. Your piece can then be left clear or finished with a sandblasted or screen-printed enamel design.
You are welcome to get in touch with any questions about any of the pledges and I will update the FAQ as appropriate too.
Risks and challenges
As with any practical project, there are risks throughout associated with the supplies and services that I buy in to make it happen. However I have good suppliers of my glass that are reliable as well as back up options should my required materials not be available when I want to go cutting.
The company I use for the water-jet cutting has recently upgraded their machine capacity, so I do not envisage a problem there with availability to get the glass cut. Again, I have alternative options to source this service and to the quality of cutting I have already achieved.
The final challenge I anticipate is my own physical capability of printing, firing, finishing and packing all your pledge rewards. Having made similar pieces before, I know the time they take to make, pack and ship, which I have factored into the delivery times for the pledges. I can also hire interns to assist me in the studio, which would provide them with invaluable experience too.
Needless to say, if there are any problems that arise, I will advise backers and take any action I can to prevent rewards being delayed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
