FLUSTER is the game that makes friends out of strangers and reveals things you never knew about your closest friends!
A truly memorable conversation is a beautiful thing. The hours can fly by when you’re really engaging with the people around you, laughing, sharing thoughts, and telling stories. Unfortunately, those kinds of experiences don't happen nearly enough. It seems to take the perfect alchemy of the right group of people in the right situation (with the right amount of wine). But what if it didn’t? What if you could foster truly memorable moments whenever you wanted? That’s the promise of FLUSTER.
FLUSTER is based around a deck of unusual questions that inspire thought-provoking conversations and hilarious stories. It’s amazing what happens when people get off conversational autopilot and really start talking. Friends who have been close for decades hear things they never knew about each other. People who just met can start to feel like they've known each other forever. Sometimes people will start discussing a question, and then two hours later remember that they were playing a game at all. That's exactly how we want FLUSTER to be played: however you like.

What's in the Box?
How to FLUSTER
There are infinite ways to FLUSTER! A lot of people like to just pick up some cards and start asking questions, and that’s totally cool with us. But if you want to add some more structure, there’s a few ways to do it. The basics "FLUSTER Classic" are like this:
- Everyone has a hand of five cards and they take turns asking each other questions.
- When you give an answer, people express how they felt about it using Reaction Cards. The reactions determine how juicy a question you get to ask next!
- FLUSTER Cards are used to turn the answer back on the person who asked it.
- No winners or losers, play as long as you want!
So is it Any Good?
Excellent question! I think we can safely say yes! We have been testing and improving FLUSTER for a long time. First we made one deck, that made its way around our social circle, then 10 more, and then 100! At every stage, we’ve shared it with as many people as possible, gathered their feedback, and made the next version even better. We’ve seen some pretty special things along the way. Some of the things people love about FLUSTER are:
- How it gets people to open up. You really can learn things in 10 minutes of FLUSTER that you never knew in 10 years of friendship (or marriage…)
- How it can make a group of people feel deeply connected, even if they were complete strangers an hour ago.
- How it can enhance pretty much any social setting. Dinner parties, epic multi-day hikes, and road trips are just a few of the occasions that people have told us were made more special by busting out FLUSTER.
- How you can just pick it up and start asking questions, or play with rules if you feel like it.
Can I Get in Time for Christmas?
We’re afraid not. We’re looking at April for delivery, but if you still want to give the gift of FLUSTER this holiday season, we’ve got something to help make that work. We’ve made some IOU cards that you can give to people explaining what their gift is and why it’s worth waiting a little while for. If you back our project, we’ll send you an IOU card at no cost!
What is the Campaign Paying For?
Mass production of FLUSTER, the SEXpansion pack, and the coaster sets. We’ve partnered with Panda GM, in our opinion the best in the biz, to produce the game. They’re pretty amazing. Everything is top-notch quality and totally customized. The deck you see in the video and photos are actually our previous version. Pretty nice, right! Well, the version you’ll get is going to be even better, with:
- A double-sized cardboard box with a magnetic flap lid. More durable, more fun, more room for expansion packs!
- Refined designs. We love the original design, but we’ve made it even nicer this time around.
- Better usability. Based on user feedback, we’ve made the text bigger, the reaction cards bolder, and the instructions easier to read.
Shipping Costs. Everything has to get shipped from the manufacturers, and then get sent out to you. Your deck will be well travelled when you get it.
Design Costs. Shout-out to Michael Lipsett, our amazing graphic designer (www.michaellipsett.com). Part of the money we raise will go to Michael, so he can afford fancy pens, or whatever it is graphic designers need to buy.
Campaign Costs. You have to spend money to make money, as the saying goes. We’re keeping things lean and mean, but we did have to spend money on:
- Video production. Shout-out to Nathan Watkins for making everything look so slick.
- Campaign promotion.
Boring Stuff. It’s not all fun creative stuff. We also have to cover stuff like Kickstarter fees.
FLUSTER was created by Devon and Walker based on a crazy experience Devon had several years ago. We’ll let Devon tell the story:
One night, during a trip to Clayoquot Sound, British Columbia, I wound up in a gorgeous natural hot springs with a couple of close friends and some other people we'd met earlier that day.
One man in the group was a travel junkie, the kind of person who wants to travel to every country by the age of something or other - you know the kind of person I'm talking about - and he had already made a good dent in his goal. He told us about a handful of questions he had been asking at dinner tables and in living rooms all around the world, and asked if we were up to hear the questions. We agreed, and he began to ask these deep, tough, thought-provoking questions. We went around the group answering them and musing on what was coming up. I realized I was feeling and witnessing something unique. The group was bonding like I'd never seen happen before during a normal conversation (or even a great one) across such a diverse group of friends and strangers. The next day we continued hanging out together, and an old friend exclaimed that he was "so flustered!" when he was asked a tough question about the relationship he was in.
In the days and weeks after this experience I couldn't shake the feeling of how much fun that experience was, how much I learned and bonded with this group of people, and how I was STILL chewing on some of my own answers to those questions. I wondered how I could create something that would consistently spark that kind of experience, where friends can be made out of strangers, and things can be revealed about your friends - and yourself - that never would have come up during "conversational autopilot." If those five questions could turn a chance encounter into such a memorable experience, what would 100 questions do?
I told Walker about the idea over a beer, and that night we began developing the initial concept for FLUSTER. Since then, we’ve spent several years building and improving FLUSTER, starting with one deck, then 10, then 100.
A lot of wonderful people have helped make this campaign, and FLUSTER in general, a reality. Most of them did out of the goodness of their hearts, and the ones who did get paid didn’t ask for nearly as much money as they could have for the hard work and immense talent they contributed. Risks and challenges
We’re working with trusted partners to produce FLUSTER and get it to your front door. Panda Game Manufacturing is handling manufacturing, and they’re the best in the business when it comes to making games (and way more complicated games than our humble little deck of cards). We’ll be working with a trusted company to handle shipping, with tons of Kickstarter projects under their belts. The process of planning this campaign has brought up plenty of new challenges, and we’ve had to learn as we went, but we’re pretty certain that we’re in great hands with these partners, and we’re perfectly situated to deliver you a great product. We’ve also talked with a bunch of successful Kickstarter creators to learn from them and make sure we aren’t missing anything important.
In terms of FLUSTER itself, we couldn’t be more confident. Hundreds of people have played the game, and we’ve collected their feedback every chance we got. This latest version is the best yet, hands-down, and we can’t wait to share it with you.
