FoodCell is packed full of cutting edge design features that are now for the 1st time combined in one elegant solution. It’s a product that really can hold 4 x 60ml gels without it bursting at the seams. Simple one finger opening, making accessing your food on-the-go or in competition stress free. Finally, a simple one finger button on the back of the FoodCell allows the main body of the unit to be detached to ensure easy cleaning. Finally, a unique design results in one of the most aerodynamic food carriers on the market.
Secure mounting Bikes come in all shapes and sizes and to meet these demands we have made the FoodCell with multiple frame fitting options from the ability to bolt directly to the integrated top tube of bikes like the Cervelo P5, Trek Speed concept and others. We have also given the FoodCell the option of a 3-strap top tube velcro connection to ensure that the FoodCell can fit almost any triathlon specific or road bike.
Long Lasting The last thing you need on race day is an equipment failure. The FoodCell has undergone extensive development work and the product is so robust we guarantee its good for 10,000 openings (that's equivalent of taking out 8 gels a day every day for 2 years).
Weatherproof & Durable We have only picked the best materials to construct the FoodCell. Using top food grade PC/ABS for the body and Linear low density polyethylene, FoodCell is not only durable to use but has great tolerance to the heat and cold.
Specifications With 110-174% greater storage than other leading nutritional carrier on the market we believe the FoodCell delivers the amount of nutrition you need without resulting in significant drag. Through our CFD testing we are confident our product with its k-tail design with airflow cutting dimples on the FoodCells body its truly the perfect product in form and function for every rider.
Being a competitive age group triathlete I have spent the last 4 years trying out pretty much every food carrier on the market. All have let me down either because of lack of storage, restrictive access to foods due to very small openings or zip designs. Some only could be attached if you had pre-drilled holes in your bike frame. Finally, was the issue over cleaning these carriers after the event. I was tired of having to cut the zip ties I used to hold such units onto my bike (trying not to scratch my bike in the process), so I could get the product to the sink and clean out spilt gel or left over flap jacks.
Of course there are some huge food storage system on the market but these are for commuters and simply not in keeping for those looking for a lightweight and aerodynamic solution. So we tried a number of solutions evident in our early sketches to CAD drawings and then multiple prototypes to get the right design and size to meet these challenges.
As you can see above the evolution of FoodCell started life a simple sketch and idea. As an Ironman triathlete and nutritional biochemist I wanted a product that was functional, not just a great looking food carrier for the bike. You can have the most aerodynamic carrier in the world but if it does not hold the food you need or you cannot get out your food without sitting up then surely the whole purpose of the product being aerodynamic is pointless.
After trying many products I could not find any that could easily hold the number of gels I wanted. Sure many claim their carriers hold 4 or 6 gels but these are <30g gels not the typical 60ml gels used in long distance Ironman or Sportives. Importantly I wanted a storage system that gave me simple access to my gels and other foods without having to fiddling about with zips or force my fingers through super tiny slits in the top of the carrier.
Searching the internet there was clearly a need for such a product as there athletes who have tried to make their own products to get around these issues. Because of this I wanted to develop a functional product that was long lasting yet provided an answer to the demands of long distance triathlon and cycling.
FoodCell is the result has been a product that is in our view the most accessible storage container for bike nutrition on the market today. It's aerodynamic, long lasting and man the thing just looks cool!
The founder, Dr Mark Tallon, is a passionate endurance athlete and triathlete, who has been working is the sports nutrition industry as a nutritional biochemist and food law expert for over 15 Years. For the past year he has been working with an expert team of designers and manufacturers to ensure that FoodCell becomes a reality.

Where is your money going?
A major problem with similar products on the market is they are simple by design, requiring very little tooling i.e. 2 bits of metal that plastic is injected into to make to food carrier. However, FoodCell has 6 moulds to truly deliver what’s missing from the market. The downside to delivering high function and a premium quality product is cost for manufacturing and making the tools to produce the FoodCell in large quantities.
We have already invested over £50k to get to this point but until we get funding for equivalent of 2000 products we wont be able to do it alone – So we need your help to make the FoodCell a reality.
The manufacturing process
The final steps are pretty straight forwards as all the hard work has already been done. You have already seen the prototype in our stills and video, we just need to take this into full-scale production. We already have a contract in place for the products to be manufactured in the UK and our final design and related drawings have been discussed in extreme detail. Once we secure funding that's equivalent to about 2000 units we can pay for the largest fixed costs of the product and that's the tooling (metal tools that plastics are moulded within).
Then all the products are assembled by hand in the UK and packaged. Once we reach our Kickstarter funding goal we are ready to manufacture and ship. It’s that simple –help us reach our Kickstarter goal and we will be ready to send these out to you ASAP.
Risks and challenges
In developing such a unique product as FoodCell there were always going to be challenges, but that’s what makes this such an exciting project now we have overcome them. One of the key components to making this project into physical product was to put together the right team of project leaders from design experts to the right manufacturers.
Despite most products in the cycling and triathlon market being made in China or Taiwan, the FlowCell Ltd team have been hand picked, born and bread in the UK. From the designers & development team to packaging and intellectual property attorneys, all are from Great Britain. This close-knit selection of market leading experts has allowed us to keep tight control over timelines and the quality of the finished product.
For over 9 months we have been refining the FoodCell so that the final manufacturing of the product goes forwards without any delays. Working with our experienced design team and manufacturer has resulted in us being ready to go to full production in a matter of days. The material selection for the final design have selected and used in our high quality prototypes (as seen in the images and video on this page). I have personally been using this product in training for the past 2 months and it 100% delivers what we claim on the box.
We have picked a manufacturer that has experience of working with huge consumer goods and car manufacturers so large volume run (In the happy chance we blow our pledge target out of the water) so we are confident we can deliver on time irrespective of the volumes we need to produce.
