About this project
Flosstime is a smart floss dispenser elegantly designed to help you build daily flossing habits. We know we're supposed to floss, but most of us forget. Traditional floss dispensers are old, outdated and hard to remember. Flosstime is a habit-forming device that will make flossing fun and nearly impossible to forget (patent-pending).
How does Flosstime work?
Flosstime easily mounts to your bathroom mirror or wall with durable and removable microsuction tape or an adhesive strip.
With a push of a button, Flosstime automatically dispenses exactly 18 inches of floss, the amount recommended by dentists and the American Dental Association. Our research shows that the biggest problem with flossing is simply getting the floss into your hands. Once it's there, almost everyone flosses properly! The automatic dispensing mechanism makes it easier for you to start flossing and removes the worry of having too much or too little.
After floss has been dispensed, Flosstime gives you a 90-second flossing timer in the form of blue-glowing quadrants that move clockwise around the circular light ring.
To form long term habits, according to Charles Duhigg in his seminal book "The Power of Habit", there must exist three key elements: cue, routine and reward. Flosstime is designed with all of these in mind. After flossing, Flosstime will light up with a blue smile for a job well done. If not used daily, an orange frown or reminder light cues the user that it is time to floss again.
The device also has a single and dual user mode so it can be shared by two people. In dual user mode, the frown is split into two and each half is a separate reminder for each person. If one person doesn't floss, the other will know. Talk about peer pressure!
To make flossing fun for kids and teens, Flosstime also comes with cute animal snap-ons. If not used everyday, the animal's eyes glow warning lights to remind kids to floss!
The three original trio includes Croakersby, Goldy and Siriby. Stay tuned for fun new snap-ons!
Stretch Goal Unlocked: Trick-or-Floss
Here we describe in detail the lighting sequence for Single and Dual User modes:
a) In the Single User mode, you can press on either side of the front face to activate Flosstime, which results in blue glowing lights around the "spout" and the dispensing of 18" of floss. In the Dual User mode, each user is assigned to either the left or the right side of the front face. Pressing the right side, in this case, will activate the floss for User 2.
b) After the floss has been dispensed, blue-glowing quadrants that move clockwise around the circular light ring indicate how long the user should floss the teeth each quadrant of their mouth. Upon completion, Flosstime will light up with a blue smile.
c) If not used daily, orange warning lights will glow to warn the user that it is time to floss. In the Single User mode, a full frown will appear. In the Dual User mode, each user gets a separate timing sequence and only his/her side will glow.
Research shows that lack of flossing can lead to gum and periodontal diseases. They have been linked to heart problems, diabetes and numerous other serious medical issues. Bacteria build-up in between your teeth and gum pockets can enter the bloodstream and cause long term cardiovascular complications. In fact, one study shows that daily flossing can add up to more than 6 years to your life!
"...people with gingivitis and periodontitis have a mortality rate that is 23 percent to 46 percent higher than those who don't" Dr. Roisen M.D. author of "RealAge"
"When it comes to your health, flossing your teeth is more important than brushing." Tracy Brown, WebMD
"...research shows that good oral care can prevent heart disease, diabetes and even dementia." Simon Usborne, The Independent
"Flossing your teeth, experts say, may do more to fight the effects of aging — at least over the long-term — than plastic surgery." Lisa Zamosky, NBC News
*Crab face is only representative; you can choose any combinations of animal snap-ons of your choice.
Hi there, meet the Flosstime team! We are a couple of tech-loving guys out of Silicon Valley who met through a Stanford Biodesign course. Many technologies and solutions today cater to medical treatment, instead of prevention. We passionately believe that incremental improvements and good daily habits are the key to longterm health. That's why we created Flosstime!
It took a lot of sweat and tears to get where we are today. Our invention embodies the hard work we have put into its development during the past busy year. Our first prototype, nicknamed Flosszee, was 3D printed and assembled in our very own apartments! Working with the team, we refined the design, mechanical functions and lighting mechanism. Believe us, there is such a thing as Floss Physics!
From beginning to end, we wanted to bring to life a product that is not only functionally useful and robust, but also so aesthetically pleasing that you would never want to hide it away. From its beautiful circular design to the elegant LED-lit ring, Flosstime will look beautifully elegant in any bathroom.
We are extremely thankful to everyone who has helped us get to where we are now. Firstly we'd like to thank the IEEE Student Venture Fund, Pitchforce, and our early investors for believing in our team and product and for funding our efforts. We are also thankful for our consultants and business partners for helping us develop Flosstime. Tom Grimm, Chris Loew, California Models and Q Design Services in particular have been instrumental in our product development progress! Finally we would like to thank YOU for checking out our story. We would greatly appreciate any support you can offer us. Let your friends and family know that there is now the first smart floss dispenser that will get them to floss. It's Flosstime!
Our next step is to begin the process for manufacturing Flosstime. The money raised will help fund our first production run, which will include tooling costs, procurement of materials and supplies, and labor costs.
Risks and challenges
We are super excited to deliver Flosstime to everyone's home, but there are intrinsic challenges in building and manufacturing hardware. We've worked day in and day out to perfect the device and have proposed a realistic timeline as to when we can bring you a high quality product.
DESIGN FOR MANUFACTURING: As we gear up for production, there will likely be minor changes and adjustments to improve the final product. We will keep you updated with any changes, and how or why they are implemented.
FULFILLMENT: Although we have done our best to ensure timely delivery, unplanned mishaps can happen and may cause a delay. Our pre-manufacturing process includes, however, selection of back-up suppliers and manufacturers to minimize potential setbacks.
Any pledge amounts will help tremendously in reaching our goal. Thank you for your support in bringing a 21st century solution to the century-old flossing problem.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
When the campaign ends!
After the conclusion of the campaign, we'll send out an email asking for your information! We may do this closer to the ship date, so there is less risk of your address changing before we ship Flosstime out.
We use high quality microsuction tapes to adhere Flosstime to the mirror. These are similar to Gecko feet in their structural design and are reattachable as well!
No. Flosstime is designed to be mounted on your mirror and some tiled surfaces. With that said, we will be provide special adhesives/mounting methods if you do want to put it on your wall.
The device comes with 100-150 meters of floss, which will last nearly a whole year for one user.
Currently the device comes with a high quality, mint waxed floss and does not take custom floss rolls (although if you are crafty, you might be able to get it to work). In the future, we will be offering a larger variety of floss.
The first generation device was originally designed to last after one year’s use. However, we will provide replacement kits that allow you to remove the rear panel and replace both the floss and batteries through the back of the device. When Flosstime is ready to be shipped, replacement kits will be available for purchase on our website. We will also provide recycling information in case floss/battery replacement is not something you desire.
About a year.
No. The device gives you exactly 18” of floss, as is recommended by dentists and the ADA.
No. Dentists recommend that you floss once everyday so the device will remind you after 22 hours of inactivity.
Not for this first generation. We believe that the only time you need to be reminded to floss is when you’re in the bathroom! Getting a push notification on your phone to floss while you’re sitting on the couch enjoying a movie is not very effective. With that said, we are working on connectivity for Gen 2.
Parents can start flossing their kids around the age of two. Once the kids have developed enough dexterity and strength, they can slowly learn to floss on their own!
Import duties, taxes and other charges that might be applied are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These are the buyer’s responsibility. Please, check with your country’s customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to backing.
