About this project
Sorry we missed you! We had a great campaign, but you can still get in on all the Vault Wars auction action. Click here for more info on where to find Vault Wars now that the project is closed!
When heroes are slain, their treasure-filled storage vaults are abandoned and put up for auction. As an aspiring hero, you must outbid your opponents to win these auctions and acquire the gear you need. Will you triumph by collecting a chest of gems and artifacts, or go home with a trunk full of junk? Outbid, out-bluff, and master the auctions to be victorious in Vault Wars.
Hello, and welcome! We're Floodgate Games, the publisher of titles such as Legacy: Gears of Time and Epic Resort and we're so glad you're checking out our newest game!
Without skipping a beat from his success with Dead of Winter, we're incredibly excited to work with such a talented game designer as Jon Gilmour to publish his next game. It's been over two years in the making, and we're excited to have you join us in making this game a reality.
Break out your gavel, dust off your lock-box and get ready for action-packed auctions in Vault Wars!
Vault Wars is a tabletop auction game of bidding and bluffing for 3-5 players that plays in less than an hour. (There's a 2-player variant, too!) Check out the rule book, or follow the overview below:
Players are each given starting Gold, and two (secret) Aspiring Hero cards that give bonuses for finding specific kinds of items.
Vault cards are drafted before gameplay begins.
Each round, players secretly select one Vault, revealing them simultaneously. Each Vault provides a unique experience, introducing new ways for the players to bid.
Taking turns as the Auction Master, players lead a cut-throat bidding war to selling off their Vault's items to the other players.
Players bid until 1 player is the winner -- paying the Auction Master and gaining the Vault's Items.
Collect gems for massive Victory Points, Weapons to gain a pile of Gold, or rare Artifacts to gain powerful abilities. In addition to valuable Items, there's lots of junk to fool your opponents into bidding on.
After all selected Vaults have been auctioned off, players may sell their items to gain Gold, or save them for Victory Points -- paying storage fees to keep them around. Players who are short on Gold can visit the Loan Shark, gaining Gold and taking a Corruption Token (worth negative Victory Points).
End of Game
The player with the most victory points from Items and one Aspiring Hero after all the auctions will be the winner!
Side Note: Vault Wars is a standalone game thematically set in the same fantasy world as our previous game Epic Resort; you don't need to have any experience with Epic Resort to enjoy Vault Wars.
We'll be releasing reviews over the first week or so of the campaign to help give each reviewer some time in the spotlight. Below you'll find some of our favorite reviewers -- if you enjoy what they do please be sure to let them know!
"This game is a really, really clever design... this is something that you're going to want to play with a lot of people, just because it's so cool and fun"

"There are so many things I like about this game... for a game that has some really basic mechanisms it's got a lot going for it. It's a heckuvalotta fun"

Cardboard Republic - Previewing: Vault Wars - "For those who enjoy auction mechanics, Vault Wars is one safe bet. Vault Wars challenges players to interact, with everyone possessing different amounts of hidden information, and yet it isn't a deduction game. It also encourages players to bluff and deceive their competition, and yet it isn't a game about lying. Instead, Vault Wars weaves seemingly disparate mechanics together in a way that’s both psychologically and mechanically engaging."
Kickstarter Tabletop Alert - "I’m impressed with the amount of game packed into a pretty simple set of components. It’s one I’d recommend especially for people who like games with a good social element and 'playing the player,' plus if you’re a fan of Storage Wars you may get a kick out of the reference."
Review - "At the core of Vault Wars is a very well designed game, full of depth, tactics, and strategy."
Kickstarter Project Review - "I really, really like Vault Wars. It's a lot of fun"

Vault Wars ended up being a fun game with a lot of creative twists on the auction genre. I think that the play time hits the sweet spot"

EVERYTHING MUST GO! - "Vault Wars also has a pleasantly high replay value for a design of its style, type, length, and depth .... If you like or enjoy bidding games, Vault Wars is right in your wheelhouse. What’s more though, it offers a few sophisticated, but not overly complex, aspects that will appeal more broadly. It might not be filler material, but it’s neither time consuming nor mentally investing. It provides just enough challenge and has a fun thematic application that it should find plenty of space on many a different table."

Preview - "Vault Wars is a pretty simple game, but definitely does a lot of things right. It has a basic structure, and then adds to that structure in interesting ways by having the vaults change how much information players have and how the auctions work"

The Tabletop gaming community is thriving! It's been an incredible experience as a publisher watching the community grow so much over the past few years. It's an exciting time for us as gamers with so many unique and interesting games, and I'm honored to have you consider Vault Wars as one of those options. Here are just a few reasons why we feel this project is worth your support.
Fast Moving and Fun - The rhythm of Vault Wars is quick to learn, and the thematic elements tie closely to their game impact; helping you stay focused on having fun and keeping an eye on your tricky opponents.
Unique Auction Mechanics - Variable bidding rules, partial information on Vault contents and pay-the-player are all combined into a streamlined package that keeps your whole group engaged at every turn.
You're helping Independent Game Design and Publishing - Everything you see in this project is the product of a massive effort by several passionate, independent creators. The efforts that went into the game design, illustration, graphic design publishing are all crafted by individuals who absolutely love our hobby. Without you, we wouldn't be able to bring these creations to life!
As a backer, you have the chance to make it in the game! We're including a unique line of flavor text on all 30 of the Junk cards, and we want YOU to help pick what makes it on the cards.
Here's how it works:
1. Become a backer of Vault Wars (any level is fine)
2. Go here to find the backers-only submission link.
3. Vote on the submissions each week during the campaign. The best text will make it in the game!
To keep our costs low, we honed the game components into the smallest set possible without compromising gameplay. With your support, we'll hit our initial funding goal and we'll be able to publish a great game.
If we exceed that goal (Edit: WE DID, thank you!), it gets even better for everyone! We're excited to see how far this project can go and just how much great additional content and upgrades we can fit in the box for you!
Vault Wars works great as a pure auction game, but sometimes you need a little help finding the right gear... naturally you'll hire some workers!
With the worker expansion, a market full of skillful helpers are available to be hired each round. Every worker provides a unique ability that will give you an advantage during the game, but hiring them will cost you gold! The longer a worker goes un-hired, the cheaper they get... but don't wait too long or your opponents will snap them up first!
If you help spread the word about the Vault Wars Kickstarter project and we can reach our stretch goals -- including the Worker Expansion in every copy of the game!! (Edit: WE DID IT, thank you!)
Step up your Vault Wars experience by upgrading to the Deluxe Edition to get 60 Custom Metal Coins and 6 Wooden Corruption Tokens. These coins will be custom made by Fantasy Coin, LLC and are extremely high quality and are styled to fit right in with the aesthetic of Vault Wars! Just pick the AUCTION MASTER - DELUXE reward tier above.
Note: To be able to fit everything in the box, the metal coins and corruption tokens will replace the punchboard coins and tokens.
Greetings, Auction Masters!
For those who are new to our games, welcome! For those who have supported us in the past, welcome back! We're thrilled to be back on Kickstarter with our 5th project! I'm looking forward to communicating with you throughout the project and after. Please feel free to reach out directly or in the comments if you have a question or concern -- I want to do everything I can to make your experience backing this project the best it can be!
Designer Spotlight -- Jon Gilmour
Without skipping a beat from his success with Dead of Winter, we're incredibly excited to work with such a talented game designer as Jon to publish his next game. Here are a couple interviews to give you an in-depth look into Jon's journey into designing Vault Wars:
We'd love to connect with you on Twitter and Facebook or right here in the project comments. You can also follow Jon Gilmour and Ben Harkins on Twitter, or send us a message directly through Kickstarter!
This project is EU Friendly -- rewards bound for the EU will ship from within the EU. No extra customs charges!
Thank you so much for your support! If you're proud to be a backer of Vault Wars and want to show it, we've made some Avatars for you to use on Twitter, Facebook, or even right here on Kickstarter. Don't see one you'd like? Let us know!
Risks and challenges
Easily the biggest challenges with publishing a tabletop game are manufacturing and shipping logistics. I've had smooth campaigns, and rough ones and learned a ton along the way!
This time around I'm as prepared as ever to navigate around production problems, shipping delays, national holidays to do my best to deliver a great game in a timely manner. As of the project launch, almost all of the illustration and graphic design work is complete. I'm planning to start the pre-press process before the project even closes to help give us a head start on getting Vault Wars on your table even faster!
I appreciate your support and patience, as I'm sure despite our best efforts there's bound to be unforeseeable complications... either way, I'm looking forward to keeping you well informed the whole way!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
