A strategic card game of Time Travel, Technology, and Influence. Build Your Legacy!
Update: We're funded! As of 12.30pm on Feb 12th, the $5500 goal has been smashed! Thank you to all the Backers, and all of you who helped promote this game so far; I really appreciate it! There are some great stretch rewards, please check them out at the bottom of the project page!
Hello Kickstarter Friends! My name is Ben Harkins, I'm from Minneapolis, Minnesota and I'm excited to show you a game I've been working on called Legacy: Gears of Time
In the world of Legacy: Gears of Time, the course of history is maintained by the operators of the Ancient Machine. As an Antiquitect, the machine binds you to the present while you travel back through time; charged with influencing the activities of the past, you are resolute in ensuring that the technological advancement of the world remains intact.
You, however, are not alone. Profiteering adventurers, crazed scientists and temporal-pirates are competing to influence the invention and discovery of these very same technologies. Excellent planning, adaptability and Influence are key to returning to the present with the greatest Legacy, claiming victory over your rivals.
Legacy: Gears of Time is a strategic card game, mechanically rooted in its time travel theme. Players each play cards from their own hand, draw from a central draw pile, move and play technologies on a single timeline, while placing their influence cubes on existing technologies.
- 2-4 Players
- 60-90 Minutes
- Ages 12+
Legacy is played on a timeline that grows at the end of each of 4 rounds. Players take turns during a round consisting of 3 actions each. During each turn, you may travel back in time, play a technology card from your hand, influence an existing technology, or draw two cards (keeping only one).
As you travel back in time, Technologies are played from your hand by paying their discard cost. Any technologies you play generate influence for you automatically.
Having more influence than your opponents is the key to claiming rewards for a technology! At the end of each round, rewards are given for each technology and its dependencies. One Influence cube from each technology will come off at the end of each round, forming your influence pool to be used in future rounds to influence existing technologies. Keep in mind, a technology is only considered successful if all of its dependencies exist previously on the timeline.
Since there are several copies of each technology, you may be able to preempt and eliminate an existing copy by playing yours earlier in the timeline! Be sure there is room for your new technology, though; each timeframe has a capacity equal to it's distance from the present.
There are also a few rare but powerful Fate cards, each allowing you to break the rules in interesting ways. Fate cards have no discard cost and don't require an action to be played.
By strategically influencing existing technologies, adapting to your opponents actions, and carefully choosing when to go further back in time, you will find yourself victorious over your rivals! History remains intact until the Ancient Machine demands you return to the past to rebuild history, and your Legacy, once more.
Games have long been a very important part of my life; even at a young age I was designing (terrible, broken, un-fun) games. As I've built my personal board and card game collections, I've tried to learn what works and what doesn't for creating fun, challenging games. In late 2010, my regular gaming group and I were talking about how there aren't very many time-travel games; I took that as a challenge. Starting with some original rough mechanics that worked well with the time travel theme, my fellow gamer and good friend Justin Stone and I went to work on development. Almost 18 months (and many iterations) later I'm very proud to present the game you see here!
When the game started coming together as something other gamers would enjoy, I quickly learned that short-run board game production is expensive! A successful Kickstarter project is a great way to be able to print a quantity that begins to bring the per-game cost down to reasonable levels. Reaching the $5500 goal (making up any difference with personal funds) will enable a production with enough copies to send to all the backers, as well as having a reasonable number to bring to our booth at GenCon Indy 2012.
If the game concept sounds fun and interesting to you, your support as a backer would be fantastic. If not, even a message with comments or suggestions would be appreciated!
The Game is Fun!
"I want to make a fun game about time travel". Every mechanic, stat, graphical element, piece of art, or story point has walked the coals of "is it fun?". The art perfectly captures a feeling of adventure, while showing off interesting (not-entirely-viable) alternative ways technology could work. Every game is full of deeply satisfying moments; from perfect execution on a plan to always feeling like there's a way you can win.
The Game is Challenging!
"You see, you need to first play the more advanced techs, then play the ones they depend on, but earlier in the timeline. Basically, think backwards". I've worked hard to not only make a game that presents many strategic challenges based on your opponents actions, but also challenges the typically forward planning that goes into strategy games. While there is a degree of luck with the cards you draw, there's certainly no shortage of choices or strategic depth.
The Game will be well made!
You can expect quality manufacturing in the game components. Here's what will be included:
- 66 Technology Cards (30 unique technologies)
- 6 Unique Fate Cards
- 4 Character / Player aid Cards
- 120 Influence Cubes (30 x 4 Colors)
- 4 Player Markers
- 1 Timeline Game Board
- 1 Present Day Marker
- 12 Legacy 50 Point Tokens
- 2 Turn/Round Markers
I would appreciate it!
...Quite a bit! I've put a lot of time and effort into this game, and nothing would make me happier than it bringing enjoyment to other gamers! A successful Kickstarter project will also help immensely for our booth at GenCon Indy 2012! I have many other game ideas I'd like to make a reality, and with your help, Legacy: Gears of Time will be the first of many published by Floodgate Games!
So you want to see more sweet artwork? Sounds good! Keep in mind, the card layout and stats could still change, but for the most part this is representative of what the final product will be.
The timeline will be split into 9 individual timeframe markers, printed on heavy greyboard. I'll send an update when the final art is done.
Irrigation (Fundamental Technology):
'Fundamental' Technologies don't have dependencies, they typically have lower costs and rewards. Since more advanced depend on them, each fundamental Technology will get increasingly valuable throughout the game.
Cartography (2nd Tier Technology):
Fact: Steve loves drawing top-hats
Flight (3rd Tier Technology):
You can pretty much put wings on anything.
Space Flight (4th Tier Technology):
It doesn't get much cooler than lightning rails in space! And yes, I know it looks like Soul Train. :)
Bloodline Influence (Fate Card):
The other fate cards are Time Folds Around Us, Willed Into Existence, Perfectly Laid Plans, and We Need More Time. I'll keep you updated as the art is completed for those; stick around to find out their abilities! Not What We Hoped For is a Fate card that got "the axe", but will most likely be a promo card.
The Kickstarter Technology Card:
You can't have Kickstarter without the Internet or Currency! You can also see quite a few more of the dependency chains in this one.
Artist Signed Prints
Here's an update with info on the signed artist prints: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/floodgategames/legacy-gears-of-time/posts/177648
What is Done?
Art. Well, most of it. Of the 40 pieces of art, 36 are done (4 of them will be done as backer rewards). The two artists, Steve Maggart and Shamas Demoret, have been working incredibly hard thus far, and are both excited to see their work go into the final product!
Graphics. Just about all the graphics are done: All of the card frames, card backs, game logo, board, present day marker, character cards, and Legacy point tokens are all done.
Playtesting. The game has undergone many iterations of changes and finally settled into the version you saw above. Many games have been played with 2, 3 and 4 players; it appears to be very stable and balanced.
What is Left?
Preparation for Printing. There will need to be some tweaking before going to print, including putting all the print sheets together.
More Playtesting. While the mechanics of the game are sound, we're still fine-tuning the balance of card counts, costs, and rewards. If you happen to be in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area on Thursday, February 23rd (6pm), we're hosting an open playtesting day specifically for Legacy at Source Comics and Games. I'm also working on setting up a couple more open playtesting days before the end of the campaign at various game shops in the area. Please follow me if you'd like to find out when/where those will be: facebook.com/FloodgateGames or twitter.com/FloodgateGames
Rule book Editing & Typesetting. The rules are written, the typesetting is in progress, and examples are being added.
Production! The response to this project posting will drive the quantity for the initial production run. After researching several specialized board game manufacturers, I've narrowed the field down to two! I'm still waiting for samples to arrive before making the selection.
I absolutely would not be at this point in the project if it weren't for all the great people I've been working with:
Justin Stone (bitsplatter.com) - Game Developer
Steve Maggart (stevemaggart.com) - Original Artist
Shamas Demoret (shamasdemoret.com) - Original Artist
Dan Semelhack (twitter.com/DanHack) - Video Wizard
I appreciate you taking the time to check out this project, and I look forward to seeing you as a backer!

Stretch Goal 6: $21,000
Reward: 1 Copy of the first full expansion for each backer ($40 level and higher)
We've been working on the first full expansion for Legacy, introducing some brand new concepts and mechanics that tie directly in with the time travel theme, as well as a few new technologies. If we reach this stretch goal, each $40 level backer (and higher) will receive 1 copy shipped for free!
Up to 5 additional Technology cards included with each copy of Legacy: Gears of Time. These Technologies build off the core set of technologies, but introduce a shift in balance to the existing technology tree. 'Satellites' and 'Antibiotics' make the communication and medical branches even stronger contenders over the transportation branch, more choices and more challenges! Banking has a dependency on 'Law', giving you a fantastic reason to go out of your way to keep influencing the previously terminal technology. 'Universities' depends on the new Fundamental Technology 'Art' and has 0 discard cost. Be sure to have some Influence Cubes ready, the reward is worth the effort!
2 copies of the 'Art' Technology card will be included. Artwork for these cards is currently in progress.
Yes! Here's a link to the rules in their current form. Expect there to be updates as we go (mostly adding graphics and examples, fixing spelling and grammar weirdness). In terms of actual gameplay, this is reprentative of how the game is played:
2.11.2012 - v1.02
2.13.2012 - v1.03 (Voicing corrections, key term casing consistency, background desaturation, rule fixes) Thanks Craig G!
2.15.2012 - v1.04 (Commapocalypse, fixing confusing sentences) Thanks Blake Morris!
Yeah, I messed up. That should say 4 copies; rewards can't be altered once there is a backer for them. Don't worry, now you'll be able to give a copy with your awesome character to even more of your friends!
