What is Eden Star
“From the ashes of dystopia to the precipice of utopia, Teslinium is our passage to the stars…” Vade Mecum Vox Veritas, Ch15 v12
With Earth’s biosphere diminished and the wastelands expanding, humanity reaches out beyond the confines of our dying planet to search for answers amongst the stars.
The space-faring Pioneers of the first migration fleet are mankind’s beacons of hope; sent to far-off, mineral rich worlds to find and excavate precious resources in order to re-establish balance and bring back their harvest to save Earth.
You are an augmented Pioneer deployed from the migration class vessel Eden Star, tasked with unearthing the remnants of the lost colony of Pharus 7, whilst terraforming the surface of this inhospitable, alien world. Equipped with the latest physics-manipulation technology; a mysterious, large, floating island above the planet's core is your domain to explore. You may choose to excavate and gather minerals in order to convert them into buildable resources, or sell them to the Eden Star in exchange for credits to upgrade your armament, outpost, or even purchase blueprints to gain access to further constructible components.
Whatever you choose, Pharus 7 is hostile to the aggressor, barren to the survivor and canvas to the creative…
As a Pioneer with a mystery to uncover and the ultimate power to create or destroy, will you play the role of aggressor, saviour, or architect as you explore the indigenous beauty of this intriguing landscape?
- Innovative physics-driven combat; grab, blast and smash your way around the world. Defend your creations and explore Pharus 7 using the powerful RMD (Remote Manipulation Device, aka Tool) grafted to your forearm
- Real-time, physics-based destruction and construction; break and then rebuild the environment around you as you see fit
- Fully dynamic freerunning movement system
- Advanced AI that can react and adapt to an ever-changing landscape
- Define the way you want to play; create structures, traps and automated defenses to protect your Eden Kit and expand your outpost
- Customise your character; change and upgrade the RMD powers at your disposal
Gameplay Features Explained
Core Gameplay Loop
The core gameplay of Eden Star is simple: establish a base, expand and defend it whilst exploring the surrounding environment for the remnants of the lost colony. Upgrade your armament and deploy additional Eden Kits to expand your outpost, inviting friends to join you in attacking large alien nests for greater reward.
Dynamic Day and Night Cycles
Drawn to the Teslinium that powers your technology, the native inhabitants of Pharus 7 are most aggressive at night. Pioneers must ensure that their base and Eden Kit are adequately fortified during the day or risk losing everything they have worked to create.
During the daylight hours you will need to explore, excavate, build and upgrade your equipment. You will still encounter enemies in the daytime, though in smaller numbers, and some of the more deadly creatures will only venture out at night.
Upgrade and bolster defences using multiple build materials to strengthen your structures and utilise new minerals discovered during the day. When the battle is over, rebuild your structures, improve your designs, and prepare to face the next attack.
Fight in your own way with free-flowing, physics-based combat
Enemy engagement is unique within the 1st-person genre, blending physics based combat with tactical execution.
Crush, smash and blast enemies around the destructible environment, combining different RMD actions, attacks and abilities in order to survive against multiple enemies and environmental hazards. The RMD Tool attached to your forearm hosts an extremely advanced AI system that learns from every combative action. Each successfully executed move and attack boosting the Tool’s power.
The full vision (not present in the Pre-Alpha Tech Demo) of the physics based combat enables the player to build a flow of attacks. As you string together attacks without taking damage, further attacks and destructive finishing moves become available to execute.
In one-on-one combat a Pioneer’s finesse in combat and skill with RMD weaponry is unmatched, against crowds of advisories you can manage your enemies by using basic attacks to build momentum, working up to powerful executions and focus attacks. Alternatively you can deploy gun turrets and defenses to take care of the battle for you!
Explore, cultivate and decimate the ultra-interactive environments
Eden Star rewards ingenuity and presents both combat and environmental challenges that can be resolved and traversed in numerous ways. With an intuitive control system in place, Eden Star gives you the ability to manipulate your surroundings in a real-time physics environment; there are no pre-scripted answers, so adaptability is the key to success.
Build with the CornerStone construction system
The construction in Eden Star is unique, championing a freeform build mechanic that allows you to place an object in any orientation without it having to be snapped to a grid.
The CornerStone mechanic allows you to use any placeable component in Eden Star as a “root”. Each Cornerstone is not tied to a world grid and can be placed on the ground almost anywhere with no predefined horizontal rotation. When the initial root is placed it creates a CornerStone grid, allowing additional components to then snap to it for easy and fast modular creation of structures. When you want a new structure in a different orientation you can choose to place additional components as CornerStones at any time and then switch between their respective grids with ease.
Excavate resources from the surrounding environment
Dematerialise whole minerals and structures to gain resources, or alternatively break them down into smaller chunks with the tools in your arsenal in order to absorb them more rapidly.
Pharus 7 holds multiple minerals that will allow you to convert and create structures and mechanical components with varying properties and attributes that will augment your defenses. Certain minerals may enable you to build walls that are strong against the majority of attacks but weak against others, whilst rarer minerals will be able to be combined to create complex mechanical structures with intriguing properties...
Deploy, defend and upgrade your Eden Kit
The Eden Kit is the most important piece of equipment at a Pioneer’s disposal.
It acts as a beacon, spawn-point, power outlet, compact factory and is the epicentre for your whole base of operations, creating a protective energy field that shields you from the corrosive atmosphere of Pharus 7 as it terraforms the area around it. Your must defend your Eden Kit(s) at all cost as its primary role is to provide you with the ability to convert natural minerals into buildable resources or into credits for upgrades. As with the RMD Tool, the Eden Kit is upgradable, and if you have the credits, you may request deployment of further Eden Kits to expand your area of exploration.
When you die your Eden Kit will attempt to recreate you, therefore you must protect it from any enemies drawn to the Teslinium energy contained within. Alternatively, use gathered resources to create buildings, traps, or automated defenses to protect yourself and your new home.
Realtime Damage and Deformation
Watch as objects, enemies, and environments deform and take damage in real time using the latest PhysX and Apex destruction around the world. Almost every surface and structure can be destroyed, mined into and then recreated at will.
Diverse, Interchangeable Upgrade System
Eden Star offers a wide range of play styles, allowing you to focus on the aspect of the game that you most enjoy. Whether it be actively seeking out your enemies in the world or focusing on the creation aspects of the game, Eden Star encourages you to experiment and develop your own class of character. Eden Star does not use a “cookie cutter” approach to creating character builds, rather it will offer a wide variety of modules and upgrades for you at your Eden Kit, providing the ability to swap between loadouts based on your current scenario.
We would love for players to be able to share each other’s worlds; to work together to defeat hordes of enemies, specialise in different character configurations and cooperate as a concise team. While a single player should be able to survive in the environment alone, working as a team should allow for richer rewards in a shorter timeframe and an engaging player experience. The system currently in development will allow for players to invite three of their friends into their own instance of the game. This should provide the basis for further multiplayer functionality.
The Universe of Eden Star
The year is 2685
In a world raised from the ashes of extinction, humanity is rescued from the brink by the discovery of a unique and finite amount of the mineral “Teslinium”, heralding great leaps in scientific understanding and the dawn of interstellar travel.
While Earth is dying, a new hope is forged. The Treaty of Unification is signed between the last remaining Citadel Nations and a great vision is borne from the construction of the three flagship Frontier Class vessels, each tasked with seeking further deposits of Teslinium beyond the boundaries of our solar system. Upon completion of the craft; True Hope, Fair Dawn and Eden Star, the first Pioneers are drafted by the Citadel Council to spearhead the colonisation of three worlds, with a focal goal of forming sustainable mineral supply routes in order to help restore Earth’s biosphere.
Over time, new non-terrestrial elements and materials are discovered along with finite traces of Teslinium. Successful trade unlocks further opportunities for mankind, as new economies and great corporations are forged through the excavation and decimation of alien worlds. Once again, humanity begins to flourish, but Earth’s recovery and the search for further Teslinium remains the Pioneers’ primary purpose.
10 years after the first colonisation, the second frontier sees the fringe expand and colonists settle far along the outer rim. With little warning, transmissions are mysteriously lost with the small outpost stationed on Pharus 7. Eden Star is deployed to investigate.
The frontier now belongs to the hardened Pioneers of True Hope, Fair Dawn and Eden Star...
You are an augmented Pioneer stationed on the Frontier Class Migration Vessel; Eden Star, tasked with the investigation and successful reclamation of Pharus 7.
Future Proofing Eden Star - Unreal Engine 4
Although the Pre-Alpha Combat Tech Demo has been developed in UE3, the full game is currently in development in UE4.
Due to the dynamic, open-world nature of Eden Star and the grand vision that we have for the game, Unreal Engine 4 (UE4) allows us to develop faster and achieve the scope that Eden Star demands. With the guidance of Epic we hope to be able to share some of this with you as we develop the game.
Working with the correct toolsets allows us to realise the game’s full scope and potential. The improvements in the technology at our disposal enables us to create even more dynamic, open-world areas with awe-inspiring levels of destructibility, allowing the player to interact with Pharus 7 in ways that will be truly breathtaking.
Using UE4 also means that we are be able to take advantage of the vastly improved physics engine, dynamic lighting optimisation, greater technical support resources, more native support for multiplayer, and a greatly streamlined development process. Moreover, if the opportunity arises to port Eden Star to the next gen consoles, the engine is amply supported.
Gameplay is core to what we do at Flix and UE4 has improved the development cycle in multiple ways. For us this is all about the end result, how best to achieve the innovation required and ultimately (and most importantly!) what is best for the game and end user experience.
What does this mean for you?
In terms of the Kickstarter goal, the move into Unreal 4 will not impact on the allocation of funds. Whatever toolset we use we have to pay for the use of the license. We are using Unreal Engine 4 thanks to the continued support from our incredible friends at Epic Games. The game will run much more efficiently in UE4, giving us more overhead for features that create more immersive gameplay. Our primary goal is to deliver the best gameplay experience possible by leveraging the most powerful next-gen engine available. Aesthetics are also extremely important (just ask our Art Director!) but for us - gameplay is king!
Where are we now?
We are currently in the process of developing the game in UE4 and prototyping new elements such as the multiplayer component. If the Kickstarter is successful we will regularly update you on progress as the game develops.
Free access to Pre-Alpha Combat Tech Demo for all Backers on any Teir!
Our Pre-Alpha Combat Tech Demo will be distributed for FREE to all backers of any tier upon successful completion of the Kickstarter. This is a showcase of the basic, core gameplay mechanics as they currently stand. The demo not only represents the first hands-on experience of the game itself but also demonstrates the quality the team are capable of.
The Pre-Alpha features a training simulation which is set on board Eden Star and forms the prototype of the core mechanics to be found in the main game.
Experience our dynamic freerunning movement system in action as you navigate the level. Try out the combat mechanics by grabbing the enemy training drones with your RMD and smashing them into the surrounding environment. Destroy the rocks in the organic section of the level to harvest the minerals contained within which you can then use to repower your RMD, or deposit into the Eden Kit for building minerals. Use our unique CornerStone mechanic to build walls, bridges, or full buildings, and defend your Eden Kit from waves of enemies.
The current demo is just an early prototype, therefore it only represents a fragment of what can be expected in Eden Star.
What are the Press saying?
"Flix Interactive is pushing the boundaries of the engine to whole new heights with Eden Star." - Cinema Blend
“Well look at that, "Innovative physics based combat" that is actually innovative” - ganryusasaki (Youtube user)
“If you combined footage of Minecraft, Red Faction, Portal, and Mirror's Edge in a single video game, it might look something like Eden Star” - TechReport
“You may have occasionally looked at Minecraft’s blocks and really wanted a piece of the action, but after getting into that chunky world you might have found it a little too… serene? After all, it doesn't have lasers, a thudding soundtrack and physics blasting out of your fingertips. You want a game that does? Try Eden Star. It’s got all that, and Minecraft’s block-building. All in the name of terraforming.” - pcgamesn.com
“Eden Star is a Minecraft type game but with parkour, actual visuals and PhysX. That's right, dear reader, and you're going to use it like God intended: to smash tentacle robots into giant structures and rocks.” - PixelJudge

Why we need your help
Where are we now?
Reward Add-onsIn response to community feedback we are pleased announce the following add-ons. Add-ons are available to anyone who pledges at the "COLONIST" tier or higher unless stated otherwise.
£40 - Printed Art of Book
Risks and challenges
What if we don’t meet our funding target?
We cannot guarantee that the game will ever see a full release and must devote time to client work to keep us afloat and fund further production . Without kickstarter funding, progress will be slow and we’ll have to cut down on the features that we would like to see in the full game.
Funding ensures we get the manpower we need to create a great quality game, in a reasonable time frame, with all the features that players want, and without having to wait months between updates. Plus - it gives us a better forum to listen to your feedback!
We are developing a complicated real-time physics based game, in ways that haven’t been done before. What happens if we run into technical problems?
Our prior experience with Unreal Tech and all of the other software involved in the creation of Eden Star has taught us much about problem-solving! At this stage we are also proud to announce that we are working very closely with Nvidia to make Eden Star a success on all systems and to work through any issues that we may face. This partnership coupled with the great support Epic provides is a solid structure for us to lean on when toolset issues arise. This allows us to focus on the challenges of physics replication across systems and the way we add, balance and tweak gameplay.
If we hit our kickstarter goals, will we be able to deliver what we promised?
Yes, we have planned the development thoroughly (we will share these plans with backers in stages throughout the campaign), and have made conservative estimates of the time it will take us to complete each process, with allowances for various circumstances. We have been cautious not to promise anything we cannot deliver in the first iteration, and future features have been thought through in a practical way.
Although we cannot commit to exact release dates at this stage, we are aiming to release in June of 2015. We will of course keep you updated once we have a more certain date. If you pledge from the Nomad tier you will get to play a Beta version before release, if you pledge from the Pathfinder tier you will get the chance to play an even earlier version of Eden Star with our Alpha version. Backers of all tiers (£5-£5000) will get the Pre-Alpha Tech Demo shortly after the successful campaign so you can play that while you’re waiting! The pre alpha tech demo will be available in December of this year.
Due to Kickstarters terms and conditions, the funding goal must be at least the minimum needed to complete the game. There have been a few campaigns recently where developers set their funding goal too low and have been unable to complete their projects. We want to be able to deliver what we promise (and are careful not to promise anything we can’t deliver!)
Our costings have been thoroughly worked out for the entire production including; the costs of producing and distributing the rewards, VAT, Kickstarter’s cut, licensing fees, electricity, rent, development costs… the list goes on. We hope to show you more on our budgeting plans in a future update.
As we are running a UK Kickstarter, a side effect of this is that the payment system does not support Amazon payments into UK accounts. As a result you will be asked to re-enter your credit card details to proceed. We hope this extra step does not hold you back from pledging your support.
We’re are currently aiming for Windows PC at this point, but there is the possibility to port to other operating systems based on demand and the success of the campaign. The first release will be for PC, with full mouse, keyboard and controller support. We are looking into support for additional operating systems and will post an update as soon as we are able to announce more.
While we are not ruling out the possibility of releasing on next gen consoles in the future, for now we are focused on delivering a great experience for PC users. We can also state that although this kickstarter does not cover rewards for the following platforms, we are a registered XboxOne and PS4 development studio and UE4 fully supports development on these platforms already.
At this stage we do not have specific system requirements for the final game, however we are aiming for mid to high end gaming systems. The systems that we run the Pre-Alpha Combat Tech Demo on are the following spec and this runs at 60-70fps;
Quad Core i5/7
Nvidia GTX 650 or ATI Equivalent (better on 660/680)
Control Pad/Keyboard and mouse
Drinks of your choosing
Awesome gaming pants
PLEASE NOTE: The tech demo is not optimised at all and may not run on your system - please let us know what your system specs are in a private message and we will happily attempt to test or resolve issues that you have in running it, as and when we can.
Steam, Humble Indie Bundle and Desura have been confirmed for distribution of the Pre Alpha Combat Demo and digital reward items.
We hope to put together some news specific to Oculus soon, all I can say to you right now is that the Oculus Rift is awesome and the team here at Flix love the potential of the Eden Star with Oculus integration.
We have added tier add-ons based on backer requests, they can be found near the bottom of the page.
If you would like to see a certain reward as an add-on please let us know and we will look into it for you.
We are aiming to release new content on a frequent basis, based on the feedback we receive from you, the backers. This is vital to keeping development fresh and evolving, and enable us to satisfy as many of our players as possible.
We are currently working on a 4-player Co-op mode, this has always been the vision for the game, though the game is designed to be just as enjoyable for fewer players, multiplayer will be talked through in detail in an update. In future iterations, we are considering PvP modes where players compete for resources or use robotic allies against each other.
The combat is actually inspired by the likes of Batman Arkham Asylum, so the enemies you see in our videos are not too much of a threat alone but in groups they are far more deadly. In the Pre-Alpha Tech Demo we only have the IKA Drones, but additional enemies, with varying behaviours and abilities (that are much tougher) will be revealed in an update.
Initially we are developing in English but have received several messages from people offering help with translating Eden Star to other languages. If you would like to offer your support in this, or would like to see Eden Star in your language, please get in touch! We want Eden Star to be accessible to as many people as we can.
We have grand plans for Eden Star, and a list of exciting stretch-goals that we aim to hit after exceeding our initial goal. We will be revealing these throughout the campaign. A bigger budget would also mean we can put more man-hours into development, and increase the frequency of updates.
This depends on the reward itself. Some digital rewards can distributed shortly after the kickstarter finishes, others won’t be shipped until the first full release. We will keep you updated through the Kickstarter site, Twitter, Facebook, and the Eden Star site.
Yes! A special edition box-set is available in every tier above the Explorer tier
In Alpha and Beta your game will be locally persistent and stored on your hard-drive. Because future developments may make changes to the way maps are saved and loaded, we cannot guarantee that older saved game will still be playable on updated game clients, but we will endeavour to keep the system as future-proof as possible.
A later stretch goal is to host game servers that make the world persistent for your game account and able to be shared with other players worldwide. This would take make the local client more efficient and increase the performance of international multiplayer games.
