We've developed a custom built suspension system to make sure all of your journeys go smoothly.
You can trust that the corrosion resistant 6000 series aluminium frame won't rust. We've added steel reinforcements in the hinges so that they're built to last.
We wanted a riding experience unmatched by other folding bikes. That meant we needed a long wheelbase with plenty of clearance around the rider's knees and feet.
The large circular top tube was designed without a central hinge to maximise frame stiffness in all directions, giving a responsive ride with precise handling. This combination leaves the rider feeling comfortable and in control.
By stealthily building a 1.2kg (2.6lbs) custom lithium ion battery into the frame we've reduced the overall weight of the FLIT-16, as unlike other semi-integrated designs there is no need for extra casing.
The battery uses the latest generation of LG cells, giving 250Wh capacity. That's enough power to take you up to 50km (30 miles) on a single charge!
Small wheels were chosen for a lightweight, compact fold and faster acceleration, but with our custom suspension unit, you still get the smooth ride of a larger wheeled bike.
The patent pending suspension unit consists of rubber discs sandwiched between hard aluminium discs.
The rubber discs convert the movement from the bumpy road surface into heat which is drawn away by the highly conductive aluminium discs.
This high performance suspension unit weighs just 120g (4.2 oz) and has a length of just 5 cm (2 ins)!
When going up a steep hill most of the rider's weight is over the rear wheel, meaning that front hub motors can lose grip on the road.
Our 220W Bafang rear hub motor never does this, and offers better acceleration than front hub motors as well, even those with a higher power rating.
The stylish integrated LED lights are bright and easily turned on or off via the handlebar display.
The rear light also functions as a brake light and, being high up on the frame, gives excellent visibility during night time riding.
We've used heat treated 6000 series aluminium alloy for our frame which gives it an excellent strength to weight ratio and amazing corrosion resistance.
But in areas subject to high contact forces like the hinges, we have reinforced key contact surfaces with stainless steel inserts to minimise wear.

As designers, engineers and cyclists based in Cambridge, UK, the FLIT team has been inspired by the amazing cycling culture of our city. We love the way that bikes make our cities feel more human and connected, and the sense of freedom that they give.
Dave and Alex (co-founders) met in 2015 whilst studying in Beijing. An ex Jaguar Land Rover engineer, Dave had long been interested in electric vehicles and dreamed of building his own. For Alex, a public policy graduate who had cycled across both the USA and China, the vision was to help make our cities happier and healthier places to live.
Electric bikes were their favourite way of zipping between lectures or to their favourite restaurants. Being such a fast and fun way of getting round, it got them thinking that more people should use ebikes to get around back home.
They relocated to Cambridge, the cycling capital of the UK to begin the FLIT story, designing our folding electric bike from a blank sheet of paper. Over the past 3 years we’ve turned our pencilled sketches into fully working prototypes, beautifully designed so that you can’t even tell that they’re electric. The fold gives you the flexibility to take it with you anywhere, whilst adding a motor makes journeys effortless, fast and fun.
We are proud to have partnered with a Taiwanese specialist aluminium bike manufacturer with over 30 years' experience in the industry to build the FLIT-16. We've been working with them for over a year now - and our final prototypes were built there too.
We chose to manufacture our ebike in Taiwan as it a world renowned manufacturing hub for specialist and high-end bike frames, particularly aluminium ones. Folding bikes are complex, so it's been really great to work with such experienced partners who understand the complexities involved.
Dave, Joe and Alex make regular visits to Taiwan to inspect prototyping and testing, check on manufacturing preparations, and meet with suppliers. It helps that Dave, our Technical Lead, speaks fluent Mandarin, letting him converse easily with the guys in the factory. This has helped our team fully understand any issues that have arisen and eliminate them in the design, manufacturing, or assembly processes.
Risks and challenges
Manufacturing hardware is difficult, and manufacturing a product as complex as a folding ebike is more difficult still. We have seen a number of ebike campaigns overpromise on crowdfunding platforms, that's why we have taken 3 years to develop the FLIT-16 and carefully plan its launch.
We have given test rides of our ebike to over 300 people in order to gather as much feedback as possible before going into final manufacturing. Test riders have been impressed and we have learnt a lot, but changes to the final design will only be superficial; we are ready to build.
FLIT ebikes are engineered in the UK and manufactured in Taiwan. As part of our preparations, our team have spent a year working with our Taiwanese manufacturing partner to co-develop our prototypes. This means that there will be fewer surprises in production for the manufacturer, and unforeseen events will be kept to a minimum. With over 30 years experience developing and manufacturing all sorts of bikes, we are confident that our manufacturing partner will be able to deliver.
Our ebikes will be tested to rigorous EU and international safety standards by SGS and TUV, two of the leading global testing companies. Our frame has already passed preliminary tests, and we will commence final testing as soon as we hit our campaign target. Preliminary tests mimic final testing, giving us a high degree of confidence that we will pass. In the event of failure, we will work closely with our manufacturing partner and the testing house to make modifications that ensure we do pass.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
