About this project
A NEW (old fashioned) Art Format
Flipbookit.net is from kinetic artists, Mark Rosen and Wendy Marvel. They create moving art that tells stories and tickles our sense of nostalgia. In late 2011, their series of motorized flipbooks based on the motion studies of Edweard Muybridge began touring with galleries, art shows and at special events internationally. MAKE magazine is featuring the artists in their January issue and a few of the boxes were on display at Maker Fair 2012 (you can see the original flipbooks at www.mechanicalflipbook.com)
The gallery-versions of their original mechanical flip-book artworks are expensive and are only available in limited editions. But the public response became so overwhelming that Wendy and Mark had to share this magical art format with as many people as possible.
"When we displayed our art at the Bay Area 2012 Maker Faire, so many people wanted to know when kit version was coming out, we had to do something."
To bring the flip-book-kit to life, we decided to bring in a pro. For directing the production version of the Mechanical-Flip-Book-Maker-Kit, we teamed up with friend, inventor and manufacturing designer Steven Goldstein. Steve holds over 12 patents, was a Disney imagineer, and has guided many products from concept through production into distribution.
Behind the Scenes
The funds of this KS campaign will help make enable us to pay for all the creative people and companies who contributed to this project and take the project to the point that a whole new creative media form is developed and popularized. We started developing a user forum/dicussion list and all the online user tools and templates. Even though we know many programmers, we've found that our friends are busy, and programmers can't work for free. Your support will help get the flipbookit user base up and running. Thank You!
Risks and challenges
We've built many flipbookit prototypes and figured out how to build a bunch of these things! We are currently screening vendors so we can get all the components crafted to our standard and on schedule. Specifically, we'll be deciding on our die-cutting and injection mold vendors. Steve has been doing this type of work for years. There are still some key decisions to make, but all the indications are looking very positive.
A concurrent challenge will be getting all the online tools that we've started developing to work well together. In their respective jobs, Mark and Wendy have been managing sophisticated online projects for years and are sure to deliver that component together with our great crew. We'll all be very excited to send out our first run of flipbookits!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Yes and no. The shape is the same but the finish of the heavy cardboard box is different (and much nicer). Have a look at the update section. In update #7 we posted a photo of what the latest prototype looks like. There is even a link to a high resolution image.
But of course! These little wonders will display whatever you wish. We liked how the black and white worked with our vintage imagery, but you can definitely use color in your flipbookit. Maybe you're an illustrator or want to draw on your pages? You'll also be able to add your own handiwork directly onto the flipbookit template pages - just get out those pens, colored pencils and crayons and start drawing!
At this point there are 1700+ flipbookit orders. By the end of the funding, we may be at 2500!
We are trying to discourage people from "stacking" rewards because
1) we are concerned that there will be confusion & mistakes in the fulfillment of all those orders.
2) there is a kickstarter rule (that probably has a legal reason as well.)
3) it will be tricky to ship odd combinations because each reward is scaled and priced for set packaging and shipping rates.
4) we're trying to make many flipbookits deliver before the holidays - and you can imagine all the logistics we need to work through!
It really is best if you have a friend do another pledge in order to get both.
Based on what people have written in, it's important that your friend has a different email address/KS account than yours.
Anyways, we are truly honored that you'd like multiple rewards,
but please have a "friend" help on your end...
we really want you to have your flipbookits on schedule!
Flipbookit holds 24 frames, but we also provide extra frame cards with each kit.
No, it's much more. The SMART-DUINO kit does include three motorized flipbookits, but additional wiring, position sensors, position flags and mounting hardware for each of the 3 boxes is added, as well as an arduino-style micro-controller and programming cable. Our gallery art has a few additional circuits, but with the SMART-DUINO package, you will be able to create something that displays flipbook art just like the Spilling Water gallery piece.
There will be plenty of "how-to's" up on the forum, and tips & sample code on the website, all of which will be posted immediately after the Kickstarter campaign ends.
I can't afford the SMART-DUINO package right now. Could I just order one or two MOTO-FLIPS and add the other components later?
You could eventually upgrade a simple "MOTO-FLIP" flipbookit by later buying all the extra parts, but we haven't created that upgrade package package for the Kickstarter campaign. We will make upgrade kits available after the Kickstarter campaign ends.
Won't the prices of Flipbookits change after the Kickstarter is over and are you selling these online or through retailers?
The prices will probably change a bit after the Kickstarter campaign, but we don't know how much they will change, or which direction. We will likely have distributors and retailers marking up the price and there may be added costs in packaging.
By supporting the Flipbookit Kickstarter campaign, you are not only helping manifest a unique and intelligent product that may have never made it to market. You are also getting the first production lot that is built to the original artists' high standards and not cheapened by market pressures. Best of all, you will also help launch a brand-new art medium (and how cool is that!).
Yes, a motor is included! Although many of you might want to revert to the hand crank when showing off this beauty in all it's pseudo-Victorian style. Many of you are asking about the aesthetics of this reward - and we'd like to post pictures but we haven't quite finished building the details! But rest assured that they'll be modded into an flipbookit worthy of this anachronistic technology. As soon as we have pics we'll post!
Well, it really is a limited edition kit. So the components that make it up just won't be available in a larger quantity. That said, I think there are two ways to still get that package now.
1. Order the Ready-Made-Art option that will be delivered fully built. (I know this may be too much for many) The $500 Ready-Made-Art will be really very special - and we will consult with you about a few of the customizable details. (when compared to one of our museum quality pieces, this really is a deal for art collectors)
2. Sometimes, for whatever reason, a person cancels a pledge. Keep a close watch on the page for the occasional Dr. Steampunk cancellation then jump on it!
YES! That's been the plan all along. We are currently programming a software app that will allow you to upload your own video/animation and then download the frames for the Flipbookit cards and print them at home. Since we're still in development we can't give you exact specifics yet, but it will be awesome and it will be free.
YES! In addition to the animation you receive with your Flipbookit, you'll have the ability to download several others from our website for FREE. We're also creating a forum that will allow you to find cool animations that people have uploaded or post your own to share with the community.
YES! Right now I'm developing special animations that will be included with the "Steampunk" version. This "Image Pak" will be created personally by us for the Flipbookit. Depending on the requests and responses, we're considering making more of these in the near future (with the possibility for purchase after the kickstarter pledging ends).
We handed the whole video job to the guys at Spender and Prefect, who are real pros at this sort of thing. They shot, directed and edited and worked really well with our instructions and schedule. They also know a lot about how to make a Kickstarter project successful.
