This is a beautiful, funny, revealing comic about living with depression from the always wonderful Rachael Smith.- Chris Addison, actor/director/writer
Wired up Wrong is a collection of auto-bio comic strips that I (comic-creator Rachael Smith) made in an effort to better understand my own brain. The strips deal mainly with my struggles with anxiety and depression; some are lighthearted, some are potent, some are just straight-up advice. The cast of the comics includes yours truly, my boyfriend Adam, my cat Rufus, as well as two giant black dogs called Barky who follow me around, and two tiny game show hosts who live in my head. Yeah, it's a wild ride.
I initially released Wired Up Wrong as a 40 page book with a small print run. It was a bit of fun. 'Hey, a few people might get a kick out of this!', I thought. The books sold out. Like, absurdly quickly. Andy Oliver, Editor-in-Chief at Broken Frontier suggested it was my most important work to date. People said it had helped them cope with their own mental health issues, or made it easier to help people they knew. It made people feel less alone. I thought I was making a personal book about my own experiences but it resonated with people all over the world. It had become a funny, touching, accessible way for people to better understand mental health issues. It was overwhelming. It was awesome.
More copies of the book were needed, obviously. But instead of simply reprinting the original 40 page book, I wanted to do something much more special. That's where this Kickstarter, and you (yes, you!), come in.
The DELUXE version of Wired Up Wrong will have 100 brand new pages as well as a brand new cover. That's over 70% new content! So if you own one of the original books, it's still well worth your while trying this one out too, and if you don't own the original book, well, all 40 pages from that one are included in the deluxe version too so you won't miss out on anything at all! So to sum up:
- Soft cover with french flaps
- 140 full colour pages
- Includes original 40 pages
- 148mm x 148mm
BONUS: Thanks to meeting both of my stretchgoals, the book will now feature spot UV on the front and back covers AND each physical copy of the book will come with a bookmark and sticker sheet! YAY!

Here's one of those Artist Bio things that's supposed to sound like I didn't write it but PSSST I TOTALLY DID! Oh! Apart from the quotes underneath, they were totally written by those other dudes.
As well as numerous self-published comics such as I Am Fire, The Way We Write, and Flimsy's Guide to Modern Living, Rachael has three critically acclaimed graphic novels already under her belt: House Party (2014, Great Beast Comics), The Rabbit (2015, Avery Hill Publishing), and Artificial Flowers (2016, Avery Hill Publishing). She has been nominated for two British Comic Awards: Emerging Talent in 2014, and Best Book (for The Rabbit) in 2015. Rachael also writes and draws the humour strips for the Doctor Who: Tenth Doctor comic series published by Titan Comics and is a regular contributor to Empathize This, a website which gives marginalised people a voice through comics.
Such is the depth of Rachael Smith's character-led storytelling that you stop being a passive observer and immediately become an active participant instead. - Andy Oliver, Broken Frontier
Bloody brilliant storytelling, bloody brilliant comics...I honestly dare you not to be impressed. - Richard Bruton, Forbidden Planet International
With a balance of clean line, sharp wit and expressive cartooning, Rachael Smith is shaping up to be a major talent in British comics. - Steven Walsh, GOSH! Comics
Here's all the bang you can get for your buck!
Basically the book can go to print as soon as this Kickstarter has hit its funding goal, so I'm estimating late November. Just in time for Christmas!
I chose to crowdfund this book rather than go through a publisher 'cause although it's a super personal project, it seems to have resonated with a whole lot of people. I want the readers to feel like they're a part of what we're gonna achieve here!
I also crowdfunded my first graphic novel, House Party, through Kickstarter which was (thanks to the fans!) a huge success, so it'll be nice to do something like that again.
Thank you so much for reading this, for supporting this Kickstarter, for reading any of my comics, for saying hello to me at conventions, for being you. If you'd like to help out in a non-monetary way then please share this Kickstarter far and wide with your friends, enemies, pets, and strangers.
If you're reading this and you're suffering from mental health issues right now, please know that you're not alone, you are loved, and you are awesome.
Risks and challenges
I'm very well experienced with self-publishing comics and graphic novels, and also with crowd-funding, so I'm expecting a pretty smooth ride here for all involved.
If any problems do arise, in the workload, printing, courier services etc. I will be perfectly honest and transparent about it. You guys will be informed all the way.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
