What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About

The Wet season's heating up in Broome and I'm reaching for my hand fan.  It's a wonderful time to write beautiful gift cards and we're always on the lookout for a quality paper notepad to jot a few words, and sketch pad to design that idea.  Pop our drink into a cooler and all of the above into a tote bag and we're set; with just a few essential treats from the new Hats by Felicity merchandise product range.  Personalised with my philosophy for living life and finished with the Hats by Felicity feather, the collection is fun, useful, tasteful and carries the subtle reminder to keep dreaming the goals and loving the life.

The products are sourced, the graphics designed and the idea's in full swing for release; I just need a little 'kickstart' with funding for the first product orders to be available for Christmas and landed in good time.

The Hats by Felicity merchandise range will be available for sale through the online store, local Broome market stall and my studio by appointment.  The range will also be packed in the car with the Milliner on the Move, my on-the-road part of the business, where I travel to remote Australian cattle stations and the like with my collections of millinery headpieces and hats.  Not only do I visit regional, remote and rural Australia with collections but as the Milliner on the Move I also showcase by invitation throughout Australia's major cities and more recently overseas.  This merchandise collection will travel right alongside the Millinery feathers and fun.

The inspiration to publish my words was ignited by responses to the recently released documentary 'MadHATtan,' which followed my millinery journey from Broome to New York Fashion Week.  The products upon which I'm publishing these words are our preferred and useful delights.  I've wanted to develop this merchandise for years.  It's now time to make the range happen.

Risks and challenges

Freighting stock to a remote location is always a challenge and products arriving in time for Christmas to my headquarters in Broome will be my biggest risk. In the event that some products may miss the Christmas market people can still purchase and enjoy the range, they just won't appear in this years Christmas stocking. Our plan is to move fast though, and order products for the range as soon as we can to avoid delay.
