Fleursute is new. A new word that we invented. It means 'The art of adorning hair with flowers'.
We have created 12 beautiful images of men with flowers in their beards. This is Phase 1 of Fleursute. Future phases will include flowers in other parts of hair. Men and women. All very tasteful (nothing rude).
Our images have really captured the imagination of the people of Newcastle and we have been offered the opportunity to exhibit up to 12 images at a local 'cool' venue. The Cluny. We would love to do this, but we don't have the funds to get the images printed up to exhibition size and professionally mounted.
The exhibition would bring a lot of people in who don't usually visit art exhibitions. The models are all big working class Geordie men. Who manage to not lose their manliness by wearing flowers in their beards. This small project will really make a difference to a lot of people.
Who Are The Models?
They are all local guys who had never done anything like this before. Their day jobs include: Fishmonger, Van Driver, Heating Engineer, Audio Technician, Communications Worker and Welder.
How Did You Recruit Them?
We put out a request on Facebook for men with beards to get in touch if they wanted to be a part of a local art project. The men you see in these images all volunteered to give their time (and beards) for free and they have all throroughly enjoyed the whole experience, from the photo shoot to the national press coverage. They would LOVE to see their portraits in a public exhibition!
Who Did The Flowers?
That was me (Sue). I'm a florist with an art and design background. I work with flowers every day but this is the first time I have done anything involving beards and flowers. I am so proud of these images and I really want to see them hanging in a public venue for everyone to enjoy.
Who Did The Photography?
We persuaded a friend of ours, professional photograher David Williams to give us his time (1 full day) for free. He brought all his equipment to our house and took over our spare room for the day. As you can see, he did a fantastic job, his enthusiam and experience made all of the models feel at ease. He took over 400 photos and hand picked a selection of them for us to choose from for this exhibition. Dave, we really owe you big time!
About The Exhibition Venue
Based in a former flax spinning mill, The Cluny is a live music venue, pub and café, on Lime Street, in the Ouseburn Valley area of Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Within the same building are artists studios, offices and recording studios. The Cluny is a regular fixture in the top 100 list of World’s Best Bars, and is currently the only bar in Newcastle upon Tyne to make the list.
Because of the busy live music schedule, our photos will be seen by a huge number and variety people!
A Bit More About Us...
We (Sue and Flemming) are florists in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. This is our first Kickstarter campaign, and our first big artistic venture in a long long time. We're big advocates of micro-finance and have loaned via Kiva to at least 10 projects in the last couple of years. Now we're looking for people to get behind us with this fantastic project of ours so we can show our work in public - big and bold!
This is a small but very important project. It would benefit the people of Newcastle and the surrounding areas in a big way. It will certainly give them something to talk about. We believe that these images will stimulate discussion and give patrons to The Cluny an opportunity to see that flowers and men really can go together!
So come on... get on board with us and let's give this exhibition life!!! :-)
Risks and challenges
Potential issues might be not getting the volunteers to help put up the images in the Cluny main bar area.
We are prepared to borrow the right tools and equipment to do this ourselves if this happens.
We have been promised some local TV coverage for the first night of the exhibition. This might fall through - if it does then we will self promote via social media and word of mouth. Local radio have also shown interest in promoting.
If the project is successful then we will do everything to make sure we meet all of the challenges and minimise the risks. We will make this happen.
