Fantasy Adventures in the Real World
We are seeking a party of adventurers like you to join us on an epic quest – to bring the high-fantasy world of Magnamund and the Kai Lords into your neighborhood using Augmented Reality (AR) on your mobile phone.
Building on the heritage of the 29 Lone Wolf ‘Choose Your Own Path’ books written by Joe Dever, his son Ben and VisionizAR are using the latest Augmented Reality (AR) and location technology so you can get up off the sofa and walk in the real world to decide the outcome of each encounter, defeat monsters and gather treasure for your Homestead.
- Discover adventure on your doorstep and choose your own path
- See and fight Monsters in Augmented Reality (AR) Mode
- Collaborate with other players to overcome epic ‘Boss’ enemies
- Fight for your faction and protect your territory
This game builds on other location-based experiences like Pokemon Go and Jurassic World Alive so players can find missions and encounters; then we add stories of high adventure and a ‘choose your path’ style of play to bring you a true sense of adventure.
We want to do something special that really delivers a great fantasy experience where your choices matter and where you feel you are the hero of your own story. But we are an indie game development studio so we need help from you and other lovers of fantasy games to bring the game to the real world.
“I'm sure my dad would be excited to see his creations leap off the page into the real world like this. Gamebooks were the cutting-edge interactive technology of their day, and his world of Magnamund and the epic story of Lone Wolf are so enormous and rich in detail; it's great to see the universe of Aon explored in new mediums. ” Ben Dever
“It’s a childhood dream come true to be working with such a beloved fantasy series alongside Ben. Like many children at the time, I found Lone Wolf captivating and it truly was a forerunner to modern-day interactive adventures,” Rene Batsford, VisionizAR co-founder and Chief Visioneer.
We believe the game has amazing potential – we released a demo of what we are doing for fans of the Lone Wolf series – here is what people have said about the project.

You play a character based on the Lone Wolf characters in the adventure books but placed in the real world. Drawing on Joe Dever’s legacy we will weave together elements from the old stories with new adventures so you truly feel like you are walking in the world of Magnamund and through your phone you will see Giaks, Druids and other characters to interact with.
We can do this using the technology in existing phones with GPS mapping technology and AR tools already provided in the latest Apple and Android phones (including devices that support Android 7.0 or iPhone 7 or later).
Safety is really important for games like this and we have a system which allows players can geotag safe-locations to explore and we build the adventure to fill that space, e.g. a local park. You encounter Characters and enemies, rendered in 3D on your phone and then placed in the world allowing you to interact and start your quest.
The game core features include:
- Homestead: a place for you to store your trophies, craft and repair your equipment before heading to an adventure.
- Quests: find places of interest in the real-world to start your adventure then decide how you want to resolve each choice and each encounter. Each Encounter helps to reveal stories of the NPCs (non-player characters) you meet in the world; your decisions make a difference!
- Combat: fight fantastical enemies and monsters in the real-world revealed through your mobile phone. Choose your weapons carefully!
- Boss Fights: each encounter takes you closer to unlocking a more significant enemy who you may need help from other players to defeat for bigger rewards.
- Location: We will build on experiences like Pokemon Go and Jurassic World Live to give you a real taste of adventure talking to characters from the stories, solving puzzles and fighting Giaks - as if they are really with you in the real world.
- Narrative: The game is part of the official Lone Wolf canon and we have Lone Wolf writers, August Hahn, Vincent Lazzari and of course Ben Dever, leading the story direction to ensure we keep true to Joe’s Legacy.
- Factions: fight to protect your faction and see how your success impacts the wider world of Magnamund and the Kai Lords.
Each quest is made up of a series of encounters such as:
- Mission Giver: You are given a quest from a meeting with a character from the stories (sometimes this may instead be a 'found item' such as a wanted poster or broken cart) which starts your narrative adventure.
- 'Choose Your Path': You choose how to respond to characters as well as how to resolve encounters.
- Encounters: Puzzles, potential friends or enemies! You can resolve each one in a variety of ways; for instance, take enemies head-on or use your guile. And of course there will be traps and logical puzzles to overcome as well.
- Boss Fights: Once you complete your mission, you will unlock a Boss to battle; but you don’t have to take them on alone - any player in the local area can join in to defeat them.
VisionizAR (https://www.visionizar.com) is led by Rene Batsford and Adam Kulick working with Ben Dever, son of the late Joe Dever, the creator of Lone Wolf. Ben has inherited the series and, together with Vincent Lazzari, is working to complete the saga by writing the final three books of the 32-book series based on detailed notes left to him by his father. The founders are supported by a team of experienced game developers and Lone Wolf experts - see below for team biographies.
Today’s smartphones are amazing and most higher-end Apple and Android devices already support augmented reality and GPS location. Just like games such as Pokemon Go and Jurassic World Live we want you to be able to move around the real world to find and complete your quest. But unlike those games we offer you a real taste of adventure by interacting with characters from the world, solving puzzles and fighting Giaks - as if they are really there with you.
We also want to change location-based games in the same way that Lone Wolf changed adventure books, by allowing you to build up your character and make meaningful choices. There is a kind of magic in being able to create quests in your own local park and fighting the enemies of the Kai Lords with your friends.
We have already made a great start with the demo we made last year which showed the systems for fighting, firing arrows and even solving puzzles. However, now we need to expand on that to make a fully playable game. A game that gives you that feeling when you embark on a quest in an RPG like Skyrim or Dragon Age BUT where you play in the real world.
Doing this isn’t cheap or easy but it’s important we create an experience that lovers of Fantasy Games, like us, will adore.
We are looking to raise $45,000 to turn the elements we have already built into a minimum viable product – a fully releasable game; but with an initially small range of content. We plan to use that build to raise further investment to continue to add new content, quests, narrative, monsters, puzzles over time in a living game.
We will initially have one main Narrative Quest, ten (repeatable) side quests with different Monsters and NPCs (non player characters), one core Puzzle mechanic and one ‘Boss’ Monster. These are designed to be replayed repeatedly and still be enjoyable. However, with each additional Stretch Goal we unlock we will be able to add even more variety with different quests, monsters and features. We have so many things planned but we will only reveal new Stretch Goals as we unlock the previous one.
So of course the more you back us; the more content we will be able to make and the bigger the initial game will be on release!
But we can’t do any of this without your support and not just the money – although that does help! We are looking for lovers of fantasy games like us – including those who are new to Joe Dever’s ‘Lone Wolf’ to join us and help make sure we deliver an amazing narrative adventure game in the real world.
Lone Wolf was originally created by Joe Dever in 1984 and Flight from the Dark sold over 100,000 copies in its first month of release. This book changed the way many of us thought about fantasy adventures as for the first time in a “Choose Your Own Path” story you could progress your character from book to book.
Joe went on to write a further 28 adventure books selling more than 12 million copies in total. The 30th book has recently been completed by his son, Ben, and Vincent Lazzari based on extensive notes Joe left after his death in 2016 and there are two more planned to complete the full series.
Lone Wolf was the first Fantasy Adventure Game to make your choices meaningful between books and that’s one of the reasons it resonates with so many people to this day. Joe worked on many other games projects from his first love wargaming to computer games titles but, even with titles like Freeway Warrior and Combat Heroes, he will always be remembered for Lone Wolf. He worked with a number of teams to bring the world of Lone Wolf to tabletop board and RPG games as well as computer games. Some of which have been successful Kickstarters in themselves!
Joe was even looking at location-based games back in 2002 (when he was on the games team for the UK mobile operator Three).
Did you know... Joe started as a classical musician and later joined Virgin Music where he worked with artists like Frank Zappa, Peter Gabriel and The Sex Pistols. He was also the first British winner of the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Championship of America in 1982. He also played a major role working at Games Workshop in the early years of Fantasy Gaming including working on classic tabletop games like the original Talisman.
Check out the upcoming stretch goals we have planned... we will reveal more as we get close to our targets.

We have already built a proof-of-concept experience which was played at LUCCA festival last year. This included a quest for player to explore the location of the event, find puzzles, fights monsters and follow a brief narrative adventure. This means we already have the bare bones needed to create much of the game but need to develop a full Quest system which will allow us to replay stories in ways which remain exciting and that can be further built on as we manage the game live.
Once complete we will focus on the Boss Fight system which will allow specific monsters and narrative side-quests to persistently occupy locations in the real world. Homesteads will be delivered next; these are environments where the player can relax, show off their trophies as well as repair and create new items using resources they have found during adventures. All of this also needs a fleshed-out progression system which we will need to balance out to sustain a sense of purpose during play. Finally, we have plans to add a range of social features, including allowing collaboration during Boss Fights.
However, we need your help to prioritize these features and plan to hold developer 'ask us anything' calls inviting backers to contribute to the games design and progress.
Risks and challenges
Money: This money will get us to a minimum viable product; but it’s also about getting further funding to ensure that we can build this into a living game.
Production: We have professional developers but with any project the time to deliver technical elements can only be estimated and we may need to iterate some parts in order to ensure we get the best experience possible. However, having made many of the key systems like melee and ranged combat we think we have minimized the risks as far as possible.
IP: Whilst we love Joe Dever’s Lone Wolf we appreciate it's not as big a license as brands like ‘The Walking Dead’ or ‘Pokemon’ However, we hope that there are enough fans of Fantasy games who would like the chance to go on adventures with their phones in the real world. Having Joe’s son Ben involved with the game is critical to us as it means we are directly linked into the values of the original game books.
Timing for reward delivery: we will try our best to keep to the timings we commit to for rewards, however we are reliant on third parties in some cases, and on the game development going to schedule for others. We will endeavor to always keep you updated, and to respond to your queries in a timely fashion!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
