Latest Update: Stretch goal achieved: 11th bonus card is added to deck.
Next Stretch goal: Flirt Deck! Check out the latest update for more.
Think about a time you received a compliment on your outfit from a stranger or a surprise letter in the mail. If you're like me, these interactions provided you a surge of joy, but chances are they also sparked a conversation. Perhaps you exchanged style tips or returned the compliment; or maybe you picked up the phone to call your friend who was sweet enough to write. But it had an impact, right?
Our modern wired world needs more interactions like that: unexpectedly positive and conversation-inspiring. I want to help encourage those interactions – with best friends, future friends, coworkers, strangers – anyone. Like this:
UCards are beautifully designed and printed on an Original Heidelberg letterpress machine. Each card has a different phrase on it, along with a fun illustration. Everything is created in Portland, Oregon using local talent.
I selected a thick, durable coverstock that’s also partially recycled. I want the cards to maintain their beauty over time, so that recipients can keep them as mementos or pass them on to other people. I’m using a rich gold foil to convey a warm, personal feel.
You get 10 cards in each deck (plus a bonus 11th card if we reach our first stretch goal). Each card is 2"x3".
UCards come in decks of 10 individual cards. You could:
• Remind your friends how awesome they are
• Compliment a stranger (and in a not creepy way!)
• Reveal your feelings to a crush
• Pop one into a gift box
• Leave one with your tip
• Fold up into a tiny paper airplane and fly it to a new friend
Or come up with a thousand new ways to use them. The point is to give them away…and often. With just one card, you can spark change and inspire people to come together, talk, and get to know one another better. I hope those who receive UCards will continue to pay it forward. Imagine a community where individuals expressed happiness more often. Smiles are contagious. Are UCards the answer to world peace? Maybe, just maybe…
I've already created the first prototype: the "You are awesome" card. This Kickstarter will help me print the remaining 9 cards.
Over the past year I've experimented with hundreds of phrases, many designs and printed countless prototypes, starting with my home printer. I've tested different paper types and strengths and I've settled on a professional letterpress studio in Portland, Oregon to print the first run. I'm ready to go!
The next step is where you – beloved Kickstarters – come in. You’re helping me print the initial bulk-sized run with a professional letterpress studio. Your contribution moves this project forward from a prototype to a reality!
My goal is to send your rewards in time for the holidays.
Your contributions help cover printing, packaging and mailing costs, as well as rewards and supplies. Some of the funds go toward overhead, namely fees from Kickstarter and Amazon. Every contribution counts and adds up to something bigger....thank you!
$4,000: I’ll unlock a bonus 11th card into the UCards deck just for Kickstarter backers! (Update: COMPLETED!)
$6,000: I’ll create and print 10 new cards for a Flirt Deck. These cards will be ratcheted up a notch (think a sexy PG-13) and may include such scintillating lines as “My love for you is organic and locally grown” and “I'd like to buy you a drink. And not just a PBR." Who needs online dating when you can connect in person with that hottie you’ve been swooning over? I'm going to crowdsource suggestions for this deck, so please message me your ideas!
I'll allow backers to choose between the Flirt Deck or the Original Deck. I will communicate about the Flirt Deck in "Project Update" emails.
Please note: Flirt Decks will be available in January 2014, which is later than the original reward levels.
Flavia Arsenault is a creative recruiter by day and seeker of awesome by night. She is lucky enough to be surrounded by creatives at all times, so she’s pretty sure they rule the world. Flavia spends her free time photographing summer sunsets, slacking off from going to the gym, pursuing a quest to create the world’s strongest yerba matte drink, attempting to speak French, and trying not to overuse the word “awesome.”
Thank you for your support, Kickstarters! I can’t wait to make this happen with YOU!
Super special thanks go to: Adonya, TJ, Orion, Mike, Lindsay, Franny, Rocky, JJ, Mariessa, Leah, Liya, Scott, Amanda, Darlene, Dwight, Pat and initial donors: Awesome Foundation-Portland Chapter, Barbara, and Karen. Major thanks to JR for passing me a card during an otherwise boring all staff assembly, which inspired this project. Thank you to the countless friends and family who’ve listened to me talk about UCards for the past several months and have contributed your ideas. You're a part of this, too.
In recognition of the generosity that I’m receiving on my project, I pledge to continue to support other Kickstarters. See kickingitforward.org.
Risks and challenges
The biggest risk to this project is if I have tens of thousands of Kickstarter rewards to mail out in a short time frame. Well, that would be a great problem to have! In that case, I plan to hire Task Rabbits - whatever it takes to ship your rewards on time and before the holidays. My vendors only need a two-week turnaround. So I think it’ll work out well and have built in extra time “just in case.” Certainly, if any hiccups happen along the way I will keep you frequently updated.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
