We have been looking forward to this project for a long time.
We wanted to stage a show through which we could introduce new directors,
... recruit and integrate new talent,
... and give our actors a chance to stretch their acting muscles beyond the West Indian sketch comedy that Flat Tire is popularly known for.
"Love Bites" is the perfect vehicle to service all these goals. Our target performance dates are June 10th & 11th, 2017, and rehearsals are well underway,
... with our cast members already showing a flair for high drama:
Needless to say, we're super excited to be working on new material and to make our long overdue return to the theater!
Why a Kickstarter?
There are so many expenses in producing plays and, even though the cast and crew are unpaid volunteers, most "must-haves" require payment even before the first ticket is sold. The purpose of this campaign is to help us get the seed money to fund this production.
Plus, every contribution helps keep ticket prices affordable so entire families can attend a live theatre event for about the same cost as going to the movies! (Even less if you get your ticket rewards here ::wink,wink::!)
Why is this project important?
Your support doesn't just help us stage a show; it helps our greater community. Because as fantastic as it is that we have an Aziz Ansari and a Mindy Kaling to rep for Americans-of-South-Asian-descent-without-accents (huge fans BTW), Indo-Caribbean Americans hardly have any visibility at all. It's part of Flat Tire's mission to change that - by further diversifying the mainstream concept of what an American is.
Design of the show
Rather than writing our own original work - which would have extended our production timeline - we opted to chose from existing works by American playwrights that would speak to all audiences. And what theme is more universal and better suited for springtime than LOVE? Here are the short plays we're preparing - our "Love Bites" if you will:
- "Check, Please" by Jonathan Rand
- "Controlling Interest" by Wayne Rawley
- "Miss You" by David Auburn
- "Post-Its (Notes on a Marriage)" by Paul Dooley & Winnie Holzman
- "Surprise" by Mark Harvey Levine
Our target showdates are June 10th and June 11th - so mark your calendar because we'd LOVE to see you there!
FLAT TIRE PRODUCTIONS is dedicated to creating quality entertainment while giving the West Indian diaspora opportunities to have its voice heard through theater, film and video. The group is comprised of talented individuals from NYC’s vibrant Indo-Caribbean community. Since its inception in 2004, FLAT TIRE has produced three festival-recognized feature films and eleven stage plays, launched www.TheTVSho.com (a forum for funny videos and sitcoms like the popular "Liberty Avenue Singles" series), and created the phenomenal "Buttahflap: Fresh-Baked West Indian Comedy" live sketch comedy show which toured for two years.

Risks and challenges
We've been working on video projects and life (engagements & weddings & babies, oh my!) but it's been almost two years since we've produced a stageshow - and we miss it! So we started planning a project that would re-invigorate all the parts of the Flat Tire engine and give us a kick-start (#seewhatwedidthere). That's why we decided to select a number of one-act plays (instead of one full-length play) - so we could involve multiple Directors, start training new Assistant Directors and Stage Crew, have enough parts for our regular Actors while incorporating new talent, and get our Writers and Designers working on fresh material for marketing and promotions.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
