flat-pack has been a no-brainer for ages, but it comes with its problems…. it often means cheap, flimsy materials that don’t last and a painful assembly process.
(we’ve all stood scratching our heads over a bag of plastic parts and a set of complicated instructions…. right?)
walking round South London where I live, I noticed that people threw out their old flat pack furniture when they moved, rather than disassembling it and taking it with them. this struck me as an incredible waste. I started to wonder if things could be done differently…. and that’s how fuzl ('furniture puzzle') was born.
every single piece of fuzl furniture is held together with our innovative easy-clip, meaning no screws, no glue, nothing… the clip makes assembly quick and ‘easy-peasy’ - you don’t even need to use tools!
with quality material
our easy-clip is so hardcore that it will last practically forever, just like the beautiful Scandinavian birch ply that our furniture is made from. the construction of the plywood takes the natural strength and resilience of birch and cross-laminates it, making it the amazing material that we love to design with.
we buy our materials from responsible stockists of the finest birch plywood here in the UK. the fsc approved, responsibly managed forests which the timber originates from are found in northern climes such as Finland, Russia, Latvia and Estonia.
But why are we on kickstarter?
we have spent 2 years building up to this point, and in that time we have designed and built a range of 5 products that we love; we’ve tested them against EU standards to make sure they are safe for use in the home; we won an award (yay!); oh, and we’ve been rushing around to raise cash to keep the wheels spinning.
we now feel ready to release the products to the market at long last. but there is a catch, we are a small company and so cannot exercise the buying might that would help us achieve our target prices. we need to get a whole load of people together who want great-looking, affordable furniture that helps them make better sense of their homes.
if we succeed in this ambition we will not only be able to release our products at the right prices but also commission a comprehensive study into the environmental impact of our supply chain called ‘a trip into sustainability’. looking ahead, our dream for fuzl is to build up a successful business that gives back as much as possible.
(once you place your order we will email you regarding the colour you would like)
sustainability is a buzz word and we’re a little fearful of using it, but being passionate beginners we’ll have to ask for the learned environmentalists’ patience. we are aware that there are many challenges that face us if we are to really make our designs, supply chain and delivery processes more environmentally friendly. but we have to start somewhere and if we can conduct our study we’ll be in a better place to understand those challenges. however, that is the long haul stuff; we’ve been thinking of what we can do right away and have come up with two projects that we are really excited about:
we plan to get underway with these tasks as part of the fulfilment of this campaign and we’re going to keep you abreast of the developments as they happen.
so picture the low autumn sun of the northern Scandinavian landscape, where commercial birch trees are grown; now think of opening your door to a friendly fuzl team member delivering your furniture…
we want to fill in the blanks of the journey of a single birch tree right up to the finished product and get to grips with every single process:
a better understanding of these carbon hungry processes will enable us to establish a benchmark, detailing the current environmental costs of our products. with this information, we can then make changes to our designs where possible and work with other companies to make improvements against that benchmark. over time our aim is to be a valuable member of the cohort of businesses who are driving for real change in sustainable manufacture.
this is where our trip comes in: we are offering a handful of people the opportunity to accompany fuzl on a voyage of discovery into the murky world of hidden environmental costs. No planes allowed, and although there will be saunas, visits to amazing factories, drinks under the Northern Lights (if we’re lucky!), we have a serious agenda. if you are fascinated by manufacturing processes, passionate about the environment and prepared to spend a week with Oliver, then sign up soldier and let’s make this trip happen!
fuzl x SPARK
last year, fuzl entered a Design Council competition to receive funding and mentorship from experienced industry professionals. Out of hundreds of applicants, we were accepted onto their SPARK program and after six months’ mentorship, we were given an award as one of five finalists.
the lovely people at Folk clothing have welcomed fuzl into their stores for a fuzl-furniture-pop-up, showcasing our furniture alongside their amazing clothing creations (in both the Lamb’s Conduit Street and Goldbourne Road shops)
fuzl attended numerous trade fairs and design markets in 2017 to test the target market for our furniture. they went really well - we sold out of our pre-launch release of 3 designs in 2017 and have had great, ongoing feedback from satisfied customers.
fuzl’s founder Oliver lives in a tiny 1 bedroom flat in London with his micro family. the arrival of an additional family member meant that space was even tighter than before. Drawing on his background in design, Oliver got to work and started to build furniture under the brand fuzl to suit his needs around his ‘flat-pak no fuss’ philosophy.
Risks and challenges
we have been working hard to reduce the risks in our business, not just for this Kickstarter campaign but also for equity investments of the future.
it’s taken a huge effort by all involved to improve our designs through many phases of prototyping and then to test those designs thoroughly for their suitability in the home and commercial environment. they all now conform to European standards for strength, durability and stability.
as for manufacture, we are proudly producing our furniture in the UK which means we can ensure it meets our exacting standards for quality and if there are any issues, jump right on them.
our designs are ready for production - all we need is your support. of course, we want our furniture to be absolutely perfect for you, so we would like to aim for delivery in September 2018.
we hope you agree that we have done our homework, now it’s time to jump aboard the HMS fuzl for its ‘maiden voyage’!
